Sir Alex Ferguson called it “torture”, but by the end of Manchester United's gripping 2-1 victory over Arsenal at Old Trafford yesterday, he was already making plans for a Barclays Premier League title celebration at Stamford Bridge on April 26, leaving Arsène Wenger to a familiar lament that the best team in the country will end up empty-handed.
At the final whistle, Ferguson, the United manager, put a consoling arm around Wenger, his long-time adversary, saying that Arsenal deserved better than to lose a match that they led until a twice-taken penalty by Cristiano Ronaldo and a free kick by Owen Hargreaves changed the complexion of the title race.
Wenger agreed, claiming that there is nothing between Arsenal, United and Chelsea, but the reality is that Ferguson's team, having moved six points clear at the top, will be as good as crowned champions with two matches to spare if they win away to Blackburn Rovers on Saturday and, more tantalisingly, away to Chelsea seven days later.
Chelsea hope to have something to say about that, starting when they play their match in hand at home to Wigan Athletic this evening, but Ferguson knows that United have seized control of their destiny. “I think it's a significant result today,” Ferguson said. “That was a big, big game and we have come through it. With four games left, we're six points clear with a great goal difference [19 goals superior to Chelsea's]. “Now we have Blackburn away, which is always tough because it's a derby game, and then we have Chelsea at Chelsea. We have to look to win our games. It's as simple as that.”
It could be simpler still if Chelsea stumble against Wigan tonight or away to Everton on Thursday, but Avram Grant's team will know that their hopes, which were raised when Emmanuel Adebayor headed Arsenal in front early in the second half yesterday, took an almighty blow with United's subsequent comeback. Winning their next two matches would not be enough on its own to have United confirmed as champions, but their goal difference is so superior that only the mathematicians would be left to dispute their right to the crown in that eventuality.
Wenger reluctantly waved the white flag last night, but after a bold, impressive performance from Arsenal he clung defiantly to his belief that his team could have been worthy champions this season. “We have to accept we will not win the title,” the Arsenal manager said. “It is very difficult to swallow because we don't feel that there's a difference in quality, technically or collectively, between ourselves, Chelsea and Manchester United.”
Wenger also delivered an emotional defence of his team and of his own principles, saying that Arsenal deserved plaudits this season even though they will end up with nothing. “Football is about opinion and I feel we have done a lot this year for the promotion of the Premier League all over the world,” he said. “I am not an idealist. I want to win trophies and I am sad that we did not manage to win one this season, but I feel we have done a lot of football and we want to continue the way we play. It is a very thin margin, but that is what sport is about and we have to go beyond the system where the winner is praised, sometimes beyond reason, and the guy who doesn't win is slaughtered. Football is more than that.”
Ferguson appeared to embrace that spirit at the final whistle when he put his arm around Wenger, but the Arsenal manager would not divulge what was said. “We will keep that,” he said.

Respect to the Arsenal!
They played football and showed no fear at the Theatre!!
Granted they had a less difficult job because we showed them too much respec!
They were able to forga forward because we palyed three deep midfielders andonly Park J-S & CR (poor as they both were) tring to support Rooney!
Bad tactics!
Alas monsieur Wenger pretty football does win you nothing at times!!
You have the best team in London though!!
Jospin van Orly , Amsterdam,
Good grief I was almost feeling sorry for Arsenal after their games against Liverpool and the clear discrepancy in a referee's interpretation of what constitutes a penalty in their two Champions League games with Liverpool. Referees do decide games and it nearly happened again last night but Mr Kayâs reference to Adebayorâs âheaderâ takes some swallowing. He is obviously an Arsenal supporter or one of the hate Man Utd brigrade.
Aidan, Dubai,
I think Arsenal's constant complaining and moaning has resulted in the neutrals having little sympathy or admiration for Wenger's men. The reaction of Wenger after the Martin Taylor tackle left a bad taste in the mouth, and the antics of William Gallas also did little to endear Arsenal to the neutral.
The key for Wenger now is to add 2-3 players with mental strength, who can raise their game, and not run away, when staring adversity in the face. Arsenal are great when they are having the rub of the green, but as soon as the chips are down they collectively act like a petulant child and invariably lose!
Neil , London, UK
Even though Arsenal are not going to win the league or in
Europe this time round, I am still very proud of them. They are
by far the most watchable and exciting team in the Premier
League and in Europe.
Looking forward to next season, when I'm sure they will succeed to win some trophies.
They are in my opinion superior to both Chelsea and Man. U.
Mrs. H Sandher, Halesowen, West Midlands
Sorry Tom, sometimes you just have to remember that it is about football, not winning. Wenger's Arsenal are an absolute joy to watch, more so than any other team in the premiership - their fallibility is part of this joy. As a fan of nearly 20 years I am looking forward to next season, but will not forget this season in a hurry. Sure we are trophyless, but certainly proud of the teams achievements.
D Dobbs, LONDON, UK
Bit harsh. You could explain it by injuries and not having good enough replacements.
Mike, London,
Adebayor's "goal" was a a clear handball and should have been disallowed. I didn't hear Arsene Wenger complaining about that decision. Either complain about all bad decisions or shut up, Mr Wenger.
Roger Tilbury, Worthing,
I can't believe Liverpool fans have the cheek to comment. You guys spent a fortune in the summer and you aren't even in the hunt for the Premiership. You conveniantly ignore that your results in the CL had less to do with talent and a lot to do with refereeing decisions.Wenger whinges and his stubboness is very frustrating but I would take him over Benitez,Mourinho or Grant everyday of the week and twice on a Sunday.Scousers if you still have a club next season make a fight of the Premiership. well done Man utd you attack almost as well as the Gooners but you defend better.
neal , reading,
How can you expect high standards when the manager is already making excuses for their failures?
Having watched the game where one of his players clearly handled the ball in to the net, how can he trot out rubbish like the decisions go against them?
He's not the only one though, Football is full of people who blame everything and everyone except themselves when things go wrong.
If we are ever going to have a decent national side, we need players and the management team to take responsibility when they don't perform, they are quick enough to take the credit and the money when things go well.
martin, bristol,
Good luck to United (and I'm a Gooner). Their goal difference and results against other 'big' clubs would make them worthy champs. They have the best squad and best player - Ronaldo. Arsenal weren't tipped for the title and have done well, but need to strengthen and they will win things. Wenger is a moaner but had he pulled off a trophy this season - and they were close - it would have been incredible. If he gets the cheque book out they will be major contenders next year. He probably deserves one more year, on balance. These two clubs are great to watch and it is a privilege to have them.
JohnnyClash, Wales,
There are few finer sights in football than Man Utd in full flow and far too much is made of the football played by Arsenal, it is not superior as the last three years have illustrated, whereas the beauty of the stuff played in particular by Rooney, Ronaldo and Scholes is technically superior and brings championships.
BigH, Sax, Spain
The season looks like the 400m race with Arsenal in the outer lane leading thanks to the alphabetical order. They lead for the the three quarters of the race but turning the last corner into the home stretch they stumble and lose steam and the league. This happens season after season and Mr. Wenger has been telling us the team is young for five seasons-maybe they will win in old age, the decisons go againist them etc. Mr. Wenger will have to find a way of winning matches for 11 draws can not win a thing. He should send a bottle of Champagne up north to the deserved winners.
Njoroge Nyaga, Thika, Kenya
Pretty pretty football does not win trophies and Wenger should stop bemoaning that fact. As an old Liverpool friend of mine stated quite correctly shake the bottle of milk and the cream will always come to the top!!! as it is this year its United again. League tables dont lie Mr Wenger.
DC is also right the English league and English mentality is best served by guess what, YES.
Lets hope that these exciting finishes continue for years to come.
Graham Whittingham, Manchester, England
"we don't feel that there's a difference in quality, technically or collectively, between ourselves, chelsea and manchester united.â
and there you have the reason for arsenal's continued lack of success. wenger is blind to the failings of his team. instead of a determination not to lose, there is simply a list of excuses.
for him, a blatant handball by gallas was one of those some are given / some aren't decisions, gilberto blatantly bringing down evra was a joke free kick and he totally missed adebayor ducking out of a header and using his arm to knock the ball into the net (let's face it, the only way he was ever going to score was by accident).
how will his team ever improve if wenger thinks it's good enough, just unlucky? was is just bad luck that made adebayor miss enough chances against liverpool and united to have won a european cup and league title on his own? or was it that... um.... he's just not technically as good as torres, ronaldo, etc? 8 games, 8 points.
jem, london, uk
If the 'Gooners' hadnt disrespected the FA Cup and League Cup then they might have walked away with a cup this season as a reward for all their football. Their squad is small and a lack of rotation options has clearly hurt them. Some of their key players have looked jaded in the last 2 months compared to Man Utd and Chelsea.
What goes around comes around.
Obi Kwan, Middlesbrough,
Before Man Utd won the league last year, their only trophy in 3 years was1 FA Cup. Everyone said Ferguson should have retired, that he had lost it and that his new crop of players was not up to the task. Now everyone is saying the same about Wenger becuase all he has to show for the last 3 years is one FA Cup win. At the start of this season all the 'experts' said Arsenal would finish 5th at best, but they have challenged for the league right up to the last 5 games. Wenger is a great manager who has changed the way football is played in this country and has done it without having to spend £20m everytime he wants a new player. A few years ago he refused to pay £12m for Jermaine Jenas and decided on a little unknown Spaniard called Cesc Fabregas instead! 'nough said.
Peter, Tooting,
adebayor "headed" arsenal in front did he?
Sowester, Manchester,
Hearing Arsene on the radio this morning, in a rather bad tempered interview, he's unsurprisingly upset, but to say his team had some decisions go against them this season, suggests he feels that referees have it in for Arsenal. No Arsene, its because your team were not good enough when it really mattered. Like DC from Chichester, I am glad Arsenal have won nothing (again). Man U for the League, Chelsea for the European cup.
steve, watford, UK,
Sorry Tom, I think you have missed the point. Wenger is talking about entertainment value. The number of Premier league managers who lost their jobs this season because of a similar stand to yours makes it right that people should consider the contribution value rather than the end product. ( As long as they stay in the Premier ship)
Jim Houghton, Exeter, Devon
I wonder what the body language experts would think of the Ferguson Wenger embrace? Maybe we don't need expert advice on that.
Stephen, Manama, Bahrain
I support neither man u or arsenal. I am a liverpool fan therefore i would sooner see arsenal at the top. however........
Whinging wenger is starting to bore me, every excuse he can pitch in he will, all except the vital one. ARSENAL ARE GOOD BUT NOT GOOD ENOUGH!
Man Utd can play pretty football, as can liverpool or chelsea or any other bunch of professional footballers but pretty football alone does not win you trophies. give wenger any of the other top three squads and they would prance around looking good ..............at least for twenty minutes but you dont win tournaments like that.
Finally Adebayor's stupid dance after scoring at anfield i bet he felt like a right fool 75 seconds later.
Matt G, gillingham, UK
The self regarding hubris exists becuase we play the sort of football you and all other non arsenal fans only dream your team would play. I personally never thought we were going to win anything this season and it is not the fault of Arsenal fans that the press praises the team so much when they play well. Mental strenght is a problem but with couple of signings in the summer we will be up there again.
Ivan, Brighton, UK
Score at least one goal more than your opponent. That is a winning formula for Arsenal. Simple as that.
Igor, Ljubljana, Slovenia
It depends what you describe as a failure. The team was already hacked to bits before the start of the season and long term injuries to players such as Persie, Eduardo and Rosicky did not help the cause either. This not a defence against a season without any trophies; however, i will remember this season as a stepping ground for the beautiful football Arsenal played and a stepping ground for them to achieve great things in the future.
Kesar, Manchester, England
Change your captain!! The present one is not a leader!!
Mike , Glos, uk
A lack of Englishmen in the line up removes my sympathies for Arsenal's failure.
French/Africans may be better for Aresnal 's bank balance but not for English football; so its just as well they dont win anything..
DC, Chichester, Sussex
No trophies this season, nor last season nor the one before that. Unfortunately for Mr Wenger, success in football is actually easily measured in trophies and as such has very little to do with opinion. There must be some reason other than bad luck that Arsenal have failed in twelve consecutive tournaments. Sorry Arsenal fans but there are no points awarded in football for artistic merit or media fawning. It might be time to look for a more convincing explanation for consistent failure. May I suggest lack of mental strength and self regarding hubris as two just for starters.
