Avram Grant refused to concede the Barclays Premier League title after Chelsea’s
dramatic 1-1 draw with Wigan Athletic last night, while admitting that
they must beat Everton on Thursday to maintain their slim hopes of
overhauling Manchester United.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s side have a five-point lead and vastly superior goal
difference with only four matches remaining after Emile Heskey’s stunning
intervention in injury time, when he volleyed an equaliser on his 400th
Premier League appearance. Michael Essien had given Chelsea the lead midway
through the second half.
Grant remains furious that Chelsea must travel to Merseyside for another
midweek match, but did not stoop to blaming fixture congestion for his
side’s slide. “We’re still in it and will keep on fighting,” he said. “We
need one more bad result from Manchester United, but this result did not
help us.
“The players still believe they can do it. We need to win the games against
Everton and Manchester United and need a bad result from them. This hasn’t
changed so much.”
The Chelsea fans appear less convinced, angrily turning on their manager at
the final whistle having already booed the team off after a goalless first
half, reflecting both their own impatience and the high standards that have
been set at the club in recent years.
Grant was hindered by the unavailability of Didier Drogba because of a knee
injury and the late withdrawal of Frank Lampard as a result of a family
illness, although he also made five unforced changes that contributed to a
lacklustre performance, despite his claims to the contrary.
“I change players all the time as we’re at the end of the season with many
games and the team are playing more than they used to,” Grant said. “I tried
to keep them fresh as we have a big squad. It’s not the first time we have
played with this team. The second half was one of our best performances of
the season. We created chances every three or four minutes and their
goalkeeper gave an excellent performance.
“When you play good football you need to score the second goal. The fans were
OK. They didn’t like the first half, which I understand, but they have to
respect the football we played in the second.
“If we played like this all the time, it would be good, but it’s happened to
us too many times. We play good football and create good chances but don’t
use them. If we had used 10 per cent of the chances today we’d have been
leading 3-0 or 4-0. We played so good in the second half and this is the
football everybody wants to see.”
Steve Bruce celebrated as if Wigan had won the title themselves, although
after moving six points clear of third-bottom they need only one more win to
ensure Premier League football next season.
The Wigan manager was more than aware of the significance of this result at
the other end of the table, with friends from his former club pestering him
immediately after the final whistle. “The phone in my pocket is going off
with friends from Manchester, but I’m more pleased for my players,
especially after the results below us at the weekend,” Bruce said. “I’ve had
four phone calls from Sir Alex in two months, two before we played Chelsea
and two before we played Arsenal.”

Let's be honest here - Chelsea's brand of football is just boring. Thet have talented players, but they're not allowed to play the game properly. I think the objective of Mourinho and now Grant is to destroy English football by showing how profitable boring and arrogant can be. They certainly have no allegiance to the English game. They already ruined SWP, a brilliant player when he started, Ashley Cole likewise.
Time to move on, Chelsea. Your players deserve much better.

I think the attitude was summed up for me before a ball was even kicked. Watching the interview given by John Obi Mikel ahead of the game the interviewer asked him about Steve Bruce's belief that they could get 3 points or even something from the game. He came across as completely arrogant practically laughing at the thought. His sheer arrogance made my blood boil - as if come on this is Chelsea, look at our home record blah blah blah. Then I saw the Chelsea team sheet and blinked in surprise. Drogba wasn't starting nor even on the subs bench and even more surprising there was no defender on the subs' bench either. It doesn't matter who you are playing you just cannot legislate for what might happen. It was clear to me there was a general belief they only had to turn up to roll Wigan over.
As a Manchester Utd fan I was delighted with the result. We've also learned that you never ever take the opposition for granted no matter where they are in the table.
Gen, London,
goalkeeper rolls ball to fullback. five passes within own half ends with ball back to goalkeeper. Goalkeeper kicks ball upfield, Why not kick it upfield to begin with ? At least its in the opponents half where believe it or not is where you have a chance of scoring goals which actualy win games !!!
ted ferdinando, derbyshire ex London, England
Subs bench last night Hilario,Joe Cole,Pizzaro,SWP and Sheva. Good job we had no defensive injuries or sendings off. Essien was only option. May explain why Grant did not bring on another defender when Wigan put a third central forward on! The reason we conceded an equaliser. Act of a genius or a mad man. QED. Bye Bye Mr Grant. Don't be fooled Avram the boos were for your ineptitude. Please take your seat upstairs in Roman's luxury box and study for your pro-licence. Leave the bench to a proper manager. p.s. Take Ten Kate with you. Another pretender who is upsetting the applecart.
HUGH, Bromley, KENT
Typical of fans who come on board to support a winning team, when the winning stops they blame their own team and /or manager. Booing your own team off the park is an absolute disgrace and demonstrates that these fans were never there through the years of Ken Bates. I've still got my second division programmes from the '74/'75 season and also from the Nou Camp in '99, proud of my team through thick and thin and it is the fans who keep the likes of Man Utd up where they belong. Perhaps Abramovich will now realise you cannot buy success in English football, it is earnt over many, many years.
David P, Auckland, NZ
Avram Garant would possibly deserve a little sympathy, but for the fact that he probably helped to undermine Jose Mourinho at the start of the season. And okay, it's not him in the penalty area to prevent a goal being conceded. But i simply cannot believe that he manages to instil belief in the players.
Whining about the Monday/Thursday games doesn't really help either, quite honestly. It's like playing on Saturday and Tuesday, which isn't that unusual.
Am i NOT looking forward to the CL games against Liverpool. They will, almost certainly, end in defeat. Likewise the home game against ManU, when the unbeaten record goes for a burton. Thanks, Avram, it's been really real.
peter koeb, bournemouth, England
The title race is closer than it looks: let's suppose Chelsea beat Everton and United lose to Blackburn. Both very possible results. If Chelsea then beat United at Stamford Bridge they would have a point lead and could/would easily win the title from there. Second, Chelsea might actually win the European Cup. What will all those ungrateful Chelsea fans say about Avram then?
Tim, London,
I fully expect Avram to be promoted to "Director of Football" in the summer. Who are chelsea going to get as their next manager? Hiddink wont leave Russia, Riijkard has shown he cant handle big players/pressure and Ancelotti is pathetic in the league. He also doesnt realise its time to sell a player if he gets a birthday card from the queen. Joe Cole is not a winger he should be played in a midfield 3 alongside either Lampard or Ballack. They cant play together because they are too similair, neither has real pace, tricks or can beat a man. Drogba will almost certainly follow Mourinho to Milan so they have to overhaul their squad. They need a right back (Alves) 2 outstanding wingers (Quaresma,Messi) and a centre back with real pace to partner Terry (Ramos). Chelsea have a problem of choking in big european games because in 3 semis they lost. They will lose to Liverpoool because since last year they signed Torres and Babel while chelsea have lost a superb manager and leak too many goals
James, Yorkshire, England
To Dave in Oxford: Chelsea spent a few hundred million pounds so far. If they spend a few hundred million more they might become champions again.
Chelsea are copying what Utd are doing. They bought Essien and Ballack, although Utd were first and nicked Utd's chief executive. They can keep all 3 of them. They will not be enough. They need someone like Ferguson to win them championships.
derek, Manchester , uk
I think the truth is, Chelsea have a big squad, but not that many really good players. I think Malouda and Pizarro (to name but two) could play for weeks on end and never score a goal between them and I'm not totally convinced about Kalou either. Chelsea have the numbers, but not the quality in depth. They have bought some very mediocre players for very big money
Dave, oXFORD, UK
To Shahsan in Australia - By the time Man Utd meet Wigan the Championship and Relegation battles will be over. This match will be of no importance as Utd will be the champions and Wigan will be clear of relegation.
Celebrations all round.
bob, Manchester , uk
I saw the Heskey goal, but don't remember seeing Avram Grant in the penalty box defending, but then neither were any of the actual players. It always seems to me that the manager can decide on tactics, pick the team and tell them what to do, however when the overpaid prima donnas don't do the basics, it is the manager who gets the blame. Poor defence was the cause of the draw, not poor management.
David Leslie, Perth, Scotland
I don't see how anyone can criticise grant.
if anything, he should be applauded. "itâs happened to us too many times. we play good football and create good chances but donât use them........ when you play good football you need to score the second goal."
if only another london manager could manage to be as honest about the failings of his team.
chelsea are very handily placed considering the limits of their talent. they couldn't seriously be expected to be ahead of united. considering where chelsea were when he took over, you'd have to see grant as a steady hand.
maybe a steady hand isn't good enough for chelsea fans, but they don't exactly have a history of pretty football.
jem, london, uk
Is Mr Grant trying to tell us that he lost the Championship because Chelsea will play one Thursday game?
Tony, Manchester , uk
Grant takes the stick, but it's the millionaires on the pitch playing the game.
On paper Chelsea should be able to 'turn over' virtually every other Premier league team, but they just do not play good football - Arsenal, Liverpool, Man U and Spurs all play with much more flair, and if Arsenal could finish the chances they create they'd already be Champions!
The ugly 1-0 win is still in Chelsea's blood, it's time to risk losing 3-4 and give your fans something to shout about.
Man U should win the Premiership, and from what I've seen of them this season, they deserve it.
Now, if only Spurs could defend......................
Terry, Bagneres, France
If you don't respect lower clubs and put out a weakened squad, you deserve everything you get.
With Lampard and Drogba missing, why futher weaken the side if you genuinely want to challenge for the title.
The fans are absolutely right to blame Grant. Mourinio he aint.
David Postle, London,
I hope Chelsea continues the way with Turkish National Team Coach Fatih Terim. He makes any team play more exciting and successful.
Sevki, Istanbul, Turkey
Love the way the fans turn on their manager - it's hilarious. Clearly there are plenty of visitors to Stamford Bridge these days for whom Chelsea began when they got Mourinho.
Alex, London,
If a 'name' manager had come in: a capello or a mancini, semis of champions league (and running) and 2nd in the league by a whisker would be seen as a great achievment.
Even Mourinho staying and achieving it.
Just highlights the sad and pathetic world that managers now face at the hands of the football fan and media. Why a grown man would sacrifice the needs of his family to travel europe and follow a playground game is still beyond me anyway.
Jose, Ldn,
Exactly, Tim. It's a pathetic excuse, and I'm a Chelsea fan.
Ollie, London, UK
I bet Wigan, managed by Steve Bruce, will not fight half as hard against Manchester United. His teams never have against the old man.
Shahsan, Sydney, Australia
"To Grantâs frustration, Chelsea are being forced to play again on Thursday ..."
But isn't this the same as playing on wednesday and another on saturday?
Tim, Southampton,
