Thaksin Shinawatra, the Manchester City owner, is "not happy" with the club's recent performances and says he will decide on the fate of Sven-Goran Eriksson at the end of the season.
Reports have suggested that Thaksin has reprimanded Eriksson over a downturn in form since January and is known to be contemplating a change of manager, but the former Prime Minister of Thailand has been advised that such a decision would represent a backward step.
Despite these he is rumoured to have inquired about the availability of Luiz Felipe Scolari, the Portugal coach, although Thaksin denied the reports. "There are no plans at the moment," he said. "We will have to evaluate at the end of the season."
"I'm not happy with the performance of the club in the second half of the season," Thaksin added. "We will look at it at the end of the season and assess the club and the people involved. We'll probably have to sell some players and buy some new ones. We need some defenders, midfielders... midfielders are the key. We have some good players but we need more."

James in Yorkshire-utter utter rubbish,Svens Benfica got there on merit, look at his full managerial record before spouting such drivel, especially the job he did at Gothenburg. To take a club like Benfica to a european cup final from a country with only 2 top teams is a fantastic achievment-similair to Celtic's triumph way back in 1967.Svens record is up there with the very best-why do you think he was courted by the likes of Barcelona,Chelsea and Manchester United?

How have City fans been vindictive losers? The majority have followed City through thick and thin, mainly thin of recent years.
Yes, we may moan when we lose (or up until a few years ago) get relegated on a regular basis, but we have never been vindictive and our players have certainly never been vindictive on the pitch!
I agree 100% with John Swaine. The pragmatic amongst us knew that Champions league and possibly UEFA football was too much too soon but doing the double over United and being relatively safe from relegation from even before December has been a good return so far from Mr Eriksson. Cannot help that certain commentators seem to have had it in for MCFC since Mr Eriksson's appointment due to his failure to land any silverware with England.
Oh, and before anyone starts, I am from Manchester currently living in London due to work commitments :)
A Thorn, London,
Lee in Manchester if im right that was a year when english clubs were still banned from europe which makes any competition void. If the best teams arent in the competition and you get to the final that doesnt count. I have to admit i didnt think he had got to the final but checked the uefa site and they did so thanks for telling me.

Just because these owners have money does not mean they know diddley squat about football!
City have had their best season for years, and have proved a thorn in the side of some bigger clubs.
I suggest that if Thaksin does not understand football, he would do well out of it!

James in Yorkshire-get your facts right,Sven was a losing manager in the european cup final with Benfica.

The problem with Thaksin Shinwata is he has no idea of the losers that Man City had become and mean vindictive losers at that. Sven has turned them into a respected Premiership side with the ability to win games, without any recognised front men. The team is brand new, bought last summer, and everyone, including Man City supporters realised they were not suddenly a top four side. Sven has proved his credentials as a top Premiership manager and will quickly be snapped up if Thaksin is stupid enough to sack him. Shinwata thinks the team needs defenders and midfield players, but with a couple of class strikers in their team this year they would have finished in the top 6.
Delboy, L,
Well all the city fans and the pro sven brigade in the media are looking pretty stupid now. Anyone who plays vassell up front must be insane, he runs like lightning but couldnt hit a barn door from 3 yards. If Sven wants to win anything he needs 2 quality strikers a right winger and 2 fullbacks. Look at his record managing Benfica you have lots more money than other clubs and only have to beat Porto twice a season to win the league. At Lazio he spent hundreds of millions and only just scraped 1st in the league because Inter bottled it. All the great managers have either won the champions league or just lost in the final, what has Sven ever done in europe? His loyalty to Beckham was stupid, 2002-not fit 2004-too heavy and misses penalty 2006-scores one free kick and leaves the field in tears what a captain. He also played Heskey and Hargreaves on the left wing not forgetting taking that "lethal" striker Theo Walcott to Germany.
James, Yorkshire, England
I agree with Mr. Swaine. It's worse that Newcastle. If Eriksson is fired it's difficult to believe City will be able to find a good coach. The top four teams in England are very good and have been expensively assembled. If the plan was for Mancheser City to break into this group, then Thaksin needs to be more realistic.
mike scott, ny, usa
That is by far the dumbest thing I can imagine anyone in football doing short of firing Sir Alex Ferguson.
You don't assembled a cup winning squad in 3 months. Eriksson is a very talented coach with a proven record and he needs more than 1 season to show what he can do.
As a Spurs fan who watched the Revolving Door of poor managers at White Hart Lane spin dizzily for years, I can only gape in astonishment at a club which has landed a coach with such a phenomenal record, giving up on him without giving him a chance.
Billionaires and football apparently don't mix.
