Juande Ramos appears to be resigned to losing Dimitar Berbatov this summer and has ruled out the Bulgaria striker leaving in part-exchange for another forward. The Tottenham Hotspur head coach said that he was not concerned if Berbatov joined another club in England, but that his happiness was important.
Tottenham claim to want about £35 million for the forward but deny that Manchester City have made a £32 million bid for the striker. Real Madrid, AC Milan and Manchester United are possible destinations.
“It depends on what the offer is and whether the club will accept that,” Ramos said. “I know big clubs want to sign him. The player will only go to a club if he wants to. We want the player to be happy. He has the key to this and it is up to him.”
Ramos admitted that he has considered several replacements who would be capable of building a partnership with Robbie Keane. “Obviously, we have to cover our backs in case the player decides to leave and we have to have options to replace him,” Ramos said. “There are great players in Europe that can do just as well as Berbatov.”
Tottenham were left to count the hefty cost of forfeiting a Champions League place by losing to West Ham United two years ago, but a smaller prize will be at stake on Sunday. West Ham have occupied the top half since before Christmas, but they can be overtaken by their London rivals.
“Finishing below Spurs will not go down well with the fans,” Robert Green, the West Ham goalkeeper, who will climb Mount Kilimanjaro next month to raise money for the African Medical & Research Foundation, said. “To lose out on the last day, we would feel deprived. It is motivation enough.”
