Rafael Benitez, the Liverpool manager, has further fuelled his war of words with Martin O'Neill by claiming the Aston Villa manager should come to terms with the prospect of losing Gareth Barry.
The pair have clashed over Liverpool's interest in the Villa captain, and on the day that O'Neill said he and Randy Lerner would make a last-ditch attempt to keep Barry, Benitez has fired his latest volley claiming "If your captain wants to leave, it's a problem, but that's football."
The Spaniard's latest comments are bound to anger O'Neill, who was furious last week at the manner of Liverpool's approach for the England midfielder. The Villa boss attacked Benitez when he was told the Spaniard had claimed to have had "prolonged discussions" with him about Barry, even though Benitez had never been quoted as saying that.
Liverpool's manager has staunchly defended his actions, saying: "I think the right approach when you want to sign a player is to talk to the manager.
"I was talking to Martin O'Neill. I said we would like to sign Gareth Barry and asked what the situation was. He just said he needed to talk to the owner and I said okay. He will not have any problems with his supporters because he never said to me he wanted to sell Barry.
"We were also talking about Scott Carson because they have the option to sign him. We were just talking about football so why he was so angry, I do not know. I have been very clear. The player had said before that he wanted to play Champions League football. We knew that and so tried to sign a good player. It is that simple.
"If your captain wants to leave, it is a problem, but that's football."
Earlier today, O'Neill has said he is preparing to make one last bid to keep his captain. O'Neill said: "I wouldn't want to be saying how confident we are (of keeping Barry). It's a different era we live in. We will see. All I know is he has never expressed one iota of unhappiness in my time at Villa Park. He might not have stayed that long had he been really unhappy before. We are going to be sitting down very shortly and discussing Gareth's future. We won't let this lie.
"I am going to see the chairman in the next couple of days and, with a bit of luck, the two of us together might be able to persuade him to stay. I say persuade him - but he still has two years left on his contract."

I like GB, he is a quality player, but a midfield player. Havn't Liverpool got enough quality there? If we have a limited budget this season, should we not be looking to strengthen in other areas as priority?

Freddie from Cheshire: The boot *is* on the other foot; Inter Milan have made a £25 million bid for Gerrard, which is even more of an underestimation of value than £10 million for Barry. The reason that story isn't getting as much coverage is that Benitez hasn't whined about it - that's football!
Neil, London,
It's typical O'Neill "outrage" at everything. Rafa's often misunderstood and though he means well and respects other managers, he may come across wrongly - not the case. Offer's been made, stop whinging about it and deal with it properly. You should only want to keep players that want to stay anyway.
John, Liverpool,
I think it needs to be reminded to some people that Villa finished just 2 places behind Liverpool this season and are very much a team heading in the right direction. For Joe to accuse us of being a small club is ridiculous. We can afford him, we're a club firmly in the black, unlike liverpool.
Steve, Birmingham,
"Villa can't afford Barry"
Eh, and Liverpool can? Methinks you're forgetting something here.
Liverpool's reputation as a club is gradually on the slide, and this latest episode from Benitez et al only highlights the lack of class they have.
Calum, Falkirk,
I detect a certain amount of bitterness from the Liverpool fans & manager. A club that I used to be fond of have descended into the Man Utd of the 70's & 80's, barking on that they are a "big" club & that Villa are "small."
Aston Villa are the 4th most successful club in English football history.
Michael James, London,
I think O'Neill needs to understand that Barry, who Villa poached from Brighton's youth team, has now outgrown the club. He won't sign a new contract and will be worth even less at the end of next season, they should try to get the price possible (I reckon about £12-13m) and move on.
Rob, London,
Also villa can't afford barry. 42,000 pound a week
in the current climate is what top championship teams pay if villa want to compete you have to open that cheque book. Why else have you lost mellberg. Your just a small team and you shouldn't stop barry from trying to become better that is selfish
joe, liverpool, uk
By giving a false impression and being staunchly stubborn to accept the real fact of a player who determined to establish himself in both international and Champ league is simply irresponsible of a manager - O'Neil
Sham, Tampines, Singapore
Why is Martin O'Neill so over-sensitive about everything? It was okay for Villa to sign Watfords best player(Young) halfway through the season when they were battling relegation. Did Bothroyd act like a spoilt 10 year old kid then. No. Liverpool can offer Barry something that Villa cannot.
Carmine, liverpool,
It is no longer worth commenting on Rafa Benitez's rather warped approach to player acquisition.
Mick, Cork, Ireland
If the boot was on the other foot and a team were sniffing round Steven Gerrard, would Benitez be so philosophical as to say "that's football?" I doubt it! The lack of class at boardroom level seems to have rubbed of to the manager, as seen in the fact he is also insulting the Villa with a £10m bid!
