Sir Alex Ferguson has been promised whatever funds he needs in the transfer market this summer to maintain Manchester United as the dominant force in the Barclays Premier League. United won a second successive league title on Sunday and hope to add the Champions League crown by beating Chelsea in Moscow next week, but David Gill, the chief executive, has assured Ferguson that he will be given the money to buy reinforcements, such as Luís Fabiano, the prolific Seville and Brazil forward.
Ferguson’s main priority is to sign a centre forward to share the goalscoring burden with Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tévez and Cristiano Ronaldo. The United manager has lost patience with Louis Saha, who started only six Premier League games this season, and is considering players such as Dimitar Berbatov, the Tottenham Hotspur forward, and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, of Ajax, but the name emanating from Old Trafford yesterday was that of Fabiano, who has scored 33 goals in Spain’s La Liga for Seville this season.
United are not yet thought to have spoken to Seville about Fabiano, 27, but they have been informed of his availability by a third party and have scouted him extensively in recent weeks, with Ferguson having sought reports from his brother, Martin, who is the club’s chief European scout, Jim Lawlor, the chief scout, and Mike Phelan, the first-team coach. Their interest will hinge on a dispute with Seville, with Fabiano and his representatives convinced that he can be bought for £8.6 million. The Spanish club are standing by a prohibitive £46.8 million valuation that they claim is in his contract.
If Fabiano is available at a cut-price fee, United will make their move, but, if not, they will consider other targets. Ferguson admires Berbatov, who is eager to leave Tottenham, but he is said to be unsure about the Bulgarian’s workrate and his ability to perform against top-class opponents.
With doubts over the future of Gary Neville, who did not make a league appearance this season, and with Gerard Piqué angling for a move to Barcelona, defensive reinforcements are another priority. United remain keen on Philipp Lahm, the Bayern Munich full back, who is also interesting Barcelona, and are monitoring the situation of Micah Richards, the England defender, at Manchester City.
Wilson Palacios and Luis Antonio Valencia, the Wigan Athletic pair, and Miguel Veloso, the Sporting Lisbon midfield player, have also been linked with moves to Old Trafford, with Gill making clear last night that United are “in a position where, if we can improve it, we will.”
The other priorities are to secure a long-term contract for Patrice Evra and a permanent deal to sign Tévez.

What is all this talk about swapping Nani for Quaresma? The kid did brilliantly in his first season with United and with the nurturing United provide he could well turn into the next Ronaldo. If we're going to demand players be loyal to us, let's give them a bit of loyalty ourselves guys
Jonny Smyth, Belfast, Northern Ireland
Sir Alex dont sell Saha . Get Fabiano or Santa Cruz. Alvez or Richards and a goalkeeper , Boruc or som1. Consider swappin Nani for Quresma to get more strengh in depth as Quresma is the better player and will play right up front as well.
Jaimin, Stockport, England
I would love to see either Fabiano or Santa Cruz side next next season if Quresma plays for us he is a wonderfull player just like ronaldo maybe consider swapping him for Nani. If we dont get a striker we've got Fraizer Campbell or Welbeck. We will need Shorey , alvez or richards .
Jaimin, Stockport, England
i hope sir alex will focuse on huntelaar, alves, fabiano and micah richard.huntelaar is a young striker so that united can train him to be like ronaldo.alves also can play in left back to back up evra.fabiano is the machine goal that unstopable.micah is the world class defender.think about it sir alex
haziq, ipoh, malaysia
To Sir Alex,
Give Berbatov a wide swerve, his work rate would have a negative effect on every1 else. Should be pushing for Huntelaar, the most prolific striker in Europe over 3 seasons as first choice, then think about swapping Saha for Benzema
Stephen Gass, N Ireland,
Benzema could be the "One". Ronaldo, Nani, Giggs in the middle and Rooney and Benzema in front.... Cant get vigger than this. Sir Fargi, Plzz read this........
Shanto, Dhaka, , Bangladesh
Why is nobody talking about RONALDINHO?? He has no concrete agreement with any club as yet, not even AC Milan, and he is in need of someone like Sir Alex to get him back on the right track and help him find his form.
He can play as a striker and can fit into the freeflowing united system perfectly!
Jai Amin, London,
Me personally I would love to see Fabiano and Huntelaar come to Old Trafford. If it's 1 of the 2, i would edge for Huntelaar as he has been the most lethal striker in Europe these past 3 seasons. I'm sure if the oppurtunity came along he would find it very hard to resist.
Jermaine Burke, Tulse Hill,London, England
United does need more defence SAF need to conentrate on signing Daniel Alves with no offense to brown but he isn't a good enough going forward or crosser and then he needs concentrate on a next striker. Saha is injury proned so luis fabiano would be a good addition and then consider a new left back
Ronn B, St.Kitts,
Manchester United definitely need a striker simply because the squad does not have one. Tevez and Rooney (his confidence permitting) do a good job in sort of forward positions but more resemblant of good central offensive midfielders than out andout strikers. Other than that only 2 WBs needed.
PEB, Manchester,
United need some Defenders, not more goal scorers. We need a Left back who can defend not just attack and is caught out of position All the time.
Most All of the goals and attempts on goal come via the left full back position and centered in. Evra is good going forward but not defensive.
John A, Baltimore, USA
Who cares about the national team? It's club before country every time. Personally I would like the national team to be made up of Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool players and no-one from United. They only get tired out and injured.
P David, Wigan, England
I would like to have Afonso Alves sign as the striker for Mu.He is a prolific and lethal goal poacher and is particular deadly in the box.Back line needs to be reinforced as can be seen while Vidic was not playing.Richards is an ideal choice but I doubt he is interested ! The search must go on ...
Jonathan KY Heng, Bandar Sri Damansara , Malaysia
Benzema has already said he has no interest in joining Manchester United. Berbatov would be a better signing than Fabiano because he is proven in the Premier League. The year after Diego Forlan left us he was top scorer in Europe playing in La Liga. However if Fabiano could settle he'd be fantastic.
Dan X, Cardiff, Wales
You are still doing it. When will managers realise that the only way to improve the english national team ,is to have home grown players in the side. They should be allowed only 3 foreign players in any team that is put out on the pitch on a Saturdayand that should include Scots irish or welsh
Robbie McAndrew, marford, wales
i would love to see welbeck manucho and campbell play .along with rooney or tevez especially welbeck and manucho both are said to have good ball skills ideal to play as a tagerman
Rohan, chenni, india
i would love to see welbeck manucho and campbell play .along with rooney or tevez especially welbeck and manucho both are said to have good ball skills ideal to play as a tagerman
Rohan, chennai, india
Frasier Campbell, Febian Brandy, Danny Wellbeck - all brilliant young strikers who deserve to be given a real chance at claiming that vacant striker's berth. We haven't had a regular first-team striker to have progressed through the ranks since.... er, Mark Robins!?
Craig Stevens, Plymouth, UK
United need a full back far more than they need the over-rated Berbatov. Please go and buy Phillip Lahm SAF!!
Eric the Red, Govan,
type Fabiano into Youtube and watch some of his goals they are awesome
Jon, London, UK
well first of all, saha has to leave. he was a good player and has done alright in the past but he's just become a burden.
i'd give a chance to manucho, welbeck and campbell, but still a pure number 9 with premiership experience is something i'd look for. and dean ashton would be my first option.
vin, manchester, uk
richardson left last season... and the last defender to come close to making it was phil bardsley. pique too maybe who will be there next season. fergie will not let him go. no to fabiano
Filip, oslo,
Campbell, Wellbeck and Manucho all battling for a chance in the team sounds fine. Advice to Fergie? Get a couple of decent fullbacks and get Saha fit!
Bal, Aberdeen,
Stephen says Berbatov "does not deserve to play for Tottenham"....Man U fans celebrate your achievements, but tone down this kind of attitude; it does you no favours.
John M, Birmingham, UK
I think John misunderstands stephen. I thinks he is a spurs fan who doesnt rate berbatov.
Ellie Bergin , London,
John from Birmingham, I think Stephen Manick was speaking as a Spurs fan not a United fan. As such, we cannot be accused of acting in a manner that does us no favours...
Chris, Manchester, England
Why do Utd need a new striker? What's wrong with a settled squad? Rooney Ronaldo & Tevez are arguably our best ever front line! These debates raged last close season, and in Jan transfer window, but Fergie kept faith. Maybe lucky with injuries, but this season, but maybe Saha can still be in reserve
Steven, Manchester, UK
Hey!! Berbatov is ideal for Utd. He appears not to have the work rate, he will however give you a different dimension. No matter who he plays against, he always has an eternity on the ball, this will bring all our attacking players in to their own. And Benzema well, great for the future. Has it all
scott t, northampton, england
Interesting talk of Alves coming to United when Chelsea have knicked in and got Boswinga. Benzema would be great but too expensive. Berb should have come 2 years ago, worth £20m+ now? Not sure, he's getting on a bit. Fabiano would be good at under £9m. Palacious is quality, be a great signing.
Shane P, Edinburgh,
Were Fergie to go for Berbatov, I think he would be sublime up at Old Trafford.
That said, from what I saw of Manucho during the African Nations Cup, he looks a real prospect; I imagine Richardson may also be given a few run-outs in the Carling Cup next season?
Henry, London,
Stephen says Berbatov "does not deserve to play for Tottenham"....Man U may have won the league and may continue onwards to the champions league title, but please Man U fans celebrate your achievements, but tone down this kind of attitude; it does you no favours.
John M, Birmingham, UK
I beleive Benzema will be the right choice if available. He is young and talented forward who has alreday established himself at top level. His ball skills and ability to score goals is what makes him the right player to partner with Rooney. The next player tops my list is Huntelaar.
Ismail, KL, Malaysia
well said erwin. Why not give campbell a chance. He has done really well for hull and to be honest I want united to bring through some home grown talent. Pique wont be there much longer, evans will go to sunderland and when was the last time we even came close to have a decent midfielder come thru??
dave, preston,
loMan u need a anchor man! the like of the old carsten jancker or vieri, I see what he sees in huntelaar but i dont think he has the team spirit to play for united luis fabiano is looking to be a bargain at less than £9m however I think berbatov will be a waste of money!
Naz, london, u.k
I agree that Berbatov would be a great addition to the squad but I also believe that Karim Benzema would possibly be a better option as a player with a high work rate and ability to score goals is what is needed and Benzema possesses both of these traits.
Jack, Manchester,
Benzema is the most suitable forward for ManU. He is better than Cantona. Hope Alex Ferguson reads this!
AA, London, UK
'...After so many false dawns on the "new Cantona"'
I didn't realise any one player had been touted as the 'new Cantona' in recent years, or that Utd ever actively sought to find a new Cantona. Cantona was a catalyst back in the day, but Utd evolved, forming the Yorke-Cole partnership.
Jay, Dublin , Ireland
In actual fact Berbatov is at his best when he plays against top class opposition. Just watch all of Tottenham's big games this season and you will see how good he has been.
Carlo Cattaneo, Milano, Italy
It would be nice to sign Richards but I can't see that happening, I to wouldn't want to sign Berbatov, altough excellent on his day he is often lazy, truculent and sometimes looks like he lacks pace. Fabiano would be a better signing especially on the cheap.
Vinny Mitchell, Warrington,
What about Fraizer Campbell who will come back from his loan at Hull?
It s time to give a chance to a "come through the ranks" striker. And it s free. Contrary to the crazy figures heard here and here. And if he wasn't up for it there is still Rooney Tevez, Manucho and eventually, hrr , Saha.
erwan, Montcy notre dame, France
After so many false dawns on the "new Cantona", Berbatv would be a superb replacement, offering guile an already staggeringly fast attacking side. I don't understad why people are down on Berbatov. I reckon he would raise his game if he played for Man U. He's playing within himself at Spurs.
PB, London, UK
I think the signing of a right back such as M>Richards or another makes sense as does Fabiano.Berbatov does not have the work rate for united and would upset the balance.I dont rate either one of the two Wigan players mentioned but I do think other areas of the team needs strengthening.
Bill Graham, Blackpool, Lancashire
I would love to see Berbatov left without a deal. He does not deserve to play for Tottenham & Ferguson is probably right to question his work ethic. Juande Ramos has already proven himself as a disciplinarian and is unlikely to be placated by any weak attempt to stay if negotiations fall through.
Stephen Manick, Trinidad,
