Liverpool have signed Robbie Keane from Tottenham Hotspur on a four-year deal. The Republic of Ireland striker underwent a medical at Liverpool's Melwood training ground on Monday and the 28-year-old was then given the all-clear to move to Anfield for a fee of £19 million, which could rise to £20.3m dependent on bonuses.
Keane, a boyhood Liverpool fan, could link-up with his new team-mates on Tuesday in Spain, where Rafael Benitez's side are currently on a pre-season tour, and make his debut for the club in Wednesday's friendly against Villarreal.
"I would like to place on record my thanks to the board, players and fans of Tottenham for the past six years, which were the best and most enjoyable of my career to date," Keane said.
"I will never forget them. I would specifically like to thank chairman Daniel Levy for understanding, that, as a fan, joining Liverpool is a lifelong dream of mine and one I couldn't let pass me by. I hope one day the Spurs fans, who have been brilliant to me, can understand this too.
"I have only good things to say about my time at Tottenham and expect them to go from strength to strength under Juande Ramos and Daniel Levy."
The 28-year-old has been with Tottenham for six years, his longest ever spell with a team following stints with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Coventry City, Inter Milan and Leeds United, and last season became the 15th player to hit 100 goals for the club.
Tottenham also said it would not pursue a complaint it filed to the Premier League about comments made by Benitez during the club's pursuit of Keane.
The Republic of Ireland striker became Benitez's No 1 summer target in recent weeks, after he prioritised the need to replace Peter Crouch above his protracted move for Gareth Barry.
With Xabi Alonso likely to remain at Anfield, it remains unclear where Liverpool will go with their chase for the Aston Villa midfielder. Benitez has had four bids turned down so far and seems unwilling to meet Villa's £18 million valuation for the England international.

He'll be sorry wait till he gets his house robbed
and ends up sitting on the bench, just hope we keep Berba now,and sign another good forward.
diago, Santiago, Chile
Benitez has acted disgracefully all summer. It's rich for Levy to complain, of course, being a tapper-up of repute, but it would be nice after this to see the portly Spaniard have another mediocre season in the Prem and get his marching orders. The man has no class and deserves to take a fall.
Andy, London,
Robbie has been a brilliant player for Spurs - he'd be the first name on my team sheet every week. (barring a fit Ledley King, which looks like it'll never happen). People saying he's not worth 18 million - well he is to us. He's a consistent scorer, year in year out, in good teams and poor ones.
Rog, London,
Hey benny boy in London, dozens of better strikers???, what matches do you watch? Robbie is one of a handful of great premier strikers- world class. Wake up and I suggest you ease up on the carlings...
jonpowers, toronto, canada
Rafa great signing!! Get David Silva now. i cnt wait for the league to start now. very optimistic. Welcome Robbie to Anfield
Aviraj , London,
Shannon,
Have you been watching Liverpool at all? It's pretty obvious that we are good at the back-it's on the wings and up front that we need more firepower. Reina is probably the second best goalie in the league and we have four solid centre backs. Reina is the current golden glove holder!
Dermot, Galway,
i'm a spurs fan and rafa should have done what he has done with barry...
18 mil is way too much for barry and it is also way too much for keane.
this is great business for spurs.
keane is a good player but there are dozens of better strikers out there
ben, London, england
i swear liverpool have more fans in ireland than ireland do.
hopefully spurs use the keane money to have a go at villa after they where advised to bid for him by his agent. Probably just a ploy to get a better deal at valencia but what a coup if its pulled off!
William, london, uk
Not sure what the Reds are thinking here. Scoring goals is not the problem. They can't stop anyone from scoring against THEM. Save us the "Hyypia and Agger can return to form." Worry about the back line, Rafa or you'll be playing Dutch football: All attack, no defense. Exciting but ineffective.
Shannon, Richmond, VA, USA
Arsenal fans sayin in other tabloids that this is awful business!!! lol!! since Henry left, Arsenal dont have any class, not 1 proven striker. Chelsea tryn to buy there way as usual. Man U, ye more lyk Ronaldo Utd, !! BTW keep alonso, seems beta after euros. Desperate for wingrs tho!! Downing, silva!
Zed, Liverpool,
Cant wait to see Robbie team up with Torres. Great work Rafa, adding solid talent to the team. Another high scorer is one thing we need, cant leave it all up to just gerrard and torres, not for two seasons in a row anyway.
Now get a winger or pray Babel improves a bit at the olympics...
Grey , Hohhot, China
"Berbatov has helped him look better than he actually is."
Then imagine how good Torres is going to make him look!!!
Shane Kemp, Luton, England
Now, get a winger and wer in buisness!
BRIAN , Sligo, Ireland
Sad to see Keane go but I think he gave his best for us, wish him well at Liverpool.
Stephen Manick, Trinidad,
Cant wait for the season to get started now, all we need now is david silva. Super signing Rafa!!!
Liton, london, England
Spurs, what are we playing at? Unless we sign Arshavin or some other equal or better replacement then this is a massive backwards step. I think it will be hard to find such a replacement in the time available - and almost impossible to do so in January. The fee is excellent though, but at what cost?
Ben, London , England
12 months ago he was being linked with £6m moves to the likes of Everton and Villa, I'd love to know what's happened in that time to inflate his value so much. No doubt he's a good player but over the past two seasons I think Berbatov has helped him look better than he actually is.
Matt Cook, Enfield,
Benitez is a fool. Keane is a great player, but £18m for a player with only 1 or 2 seasons at the top of his game? Typical of the big clubs, more money than sense.
Irwin, London,
Im a Spurs fan and gutted to see him go but great business for Liverpool, Keane and Torres is a scary looking strike force.
Think Liverpool have a good shot at the title now, good luck to you and thank you Keano.
Sam, Bristol, England
Good luck Robbie - you've been a wonderful servant to Spurs. Very very sorry to see you go, but there you are.
jonathan, brighton,
good signing, assuming it goes through, What Liverpool really need though is two quality wingers if they want to compete for the title this season.
Neil, Manchester,
Excellent signing. He will make a huge difference to us next season.
As for Barry. 16m plus Steve Finnan is a very generous bid. I suspect it will eventually be sufficient. Rafa won't be interested in paying any more and rightly so.
