This will be the signing that gives us a title race rather than a title procession. Without Dimitar Berbatov, I am convinced that Manchester United would watch Chelsea cruise to the Barclays Premier League title by a good ten points. With him, it will be a tight contest because the striker has the talent to make a huge impact, as Eric Cantona, Dwight Yorke and Teddy Sheringham did at Old Trafford.
United will feel that they are overpaying for Berbatov by as much as £8million - he may cost £28million. But Sir Alex Ferguson, the manager, would argue that they have little choice and that the outlay will be worth it if United retain their title. It is the only move that gives them a chance to keep pace with Chelsea.
Cristiano Ronaldo is injured and Wayne Rooney is recovering from illness, but United cannot afford to wait for them to regain top form. Ferguson's team need to show a cutting edge immediately. They are away to Liverpool and Chelsea on successive weekends in September and the risk of being six points behind after five weeks is too great not to act, despite the price.
For the longer term they have signed a star, a 27-year-old whose best years are to come. A fit, motivated Berbatov - what an asset. He may not have Cantona's aura or toughness, but he is better technically. Berbatov is as talented as Marco van Basten, and if he does not quite have the Holland striker's speed or the workrate of a Carlos Tévez, he will be surrounded by quick, willing runners. It will not matter if he does not bust a gut chasing back and supporting the team when they are defending.
United are the perfect team for Berbatov. Imagine his movement and creative potential alongside Rooney and Ronaldo, fed by Paul Scholes. The Bulgaria striker unlocks defences with his intelligent, precise passing and creates space with his smart running. And do not forget his goalscoring. It is not only that he is prolific: Berbatov offers an aerial threat, unlike Rooney and Tévez.
There will be doom and gloom at White Hart Lane. Tottenham Hotspur's two key strikers, Robbie Keane and Berbatov, gone in a summer. Spurs should look to Goodison Park for inspiration. Everton lost Rooney to United in 2004 and what happened? They went on to finish fourth.
David Moyes adapted. He is a manager who knows how to manage change. At Arsenal, Arsène Wenger coped with the loss of Robert Pires, Patrick Vieira and Thierry Henry, three mainstays, over three years. Last season Gareth Southgate kept Middlesbrough up despite losing Mark Viduka and Yakubu Ayegbeni, which was one of the finest achievements of the season. Tottenham have looked good in pre-season and Juande Ramos, the head coach, will hardly have been taken by surprise at the vanishing of his strikeforce. He will find a way for his team to cope and to thrive.
Besides, Tottenham fans should realise that had Berbatov stayed, he would not have been at his best. Unhappy players tend to underperform. But a motivated, excited, healthy and happy Berbatov - that is some prospect. His presence will be felt at Stamford Bridge as well as Old Trafford.

I know you played for Chelsea, but you're really over-estimating them. Deco was overrated in his peak, now he's past it - he'll prove to be a flop - MARK MY WORDS TONY!
Chelsea still haven't replaced Duff & Robben...their lack of width will cost them against organised teams.
3 in a row beckons!
Chris C, Zurich,
"United are the perfect team for Berbatov", I don't think so, he's too slow to play their counter attacking game and claims that he gives an aerial threat are exagerrated as he's tall, does Torres have much of an aerial threat? Barcelona would be perfect for Berbatov he could be Henrys new Bergkamp
jim, London,
berbatov would be a good signing he would score 20 goals next season and chelsea are playing catch up to united not the other way round chelsea will not even finish in the top three next season because there an aging team and theyve bought deco whos days have past and bosingwa an averige right back
Paul, Manchester, England
Dear oh dear, Tony. Last season, Rooney missed the first two months because of injury, plus Ronaldo was suspended for 3 games. It wasn't until the home game against Tottenham (4th of the season) that United picked up their first win and still managed to win the Premier League. 10 points... ha!!!
Rob Cieka, Dublin, Ireland
Under the 'great' Mourinho Chelsea only managed 11 points out of a possible 18 in their first 6 games last season. Who's been added to the squad since? Scolari,a Barca reject (Deco), a useless striker (Anelka),an average full-back (Bosingwa). This will make them 10 points better that Utd? lol
V, Toronto, canada
Valentin: "Berbatov is better than Cantona..."How can Berbatov make a bigger impact at United than Eric did? He took us to the next level, was the missing piece in the jigsaw and won the title after a 26 year wait. We are currently reigning English and European Champions. What impact can top that?
Richard, Manchester, England
10 points or more!? We'll see.
To me, Chelsea still need some flair out wide, and a creative, second striker (like Berbatov!). They still seem set up for the long ball up to Drogba with Lampard and Ballack supporting. It hasn't been good enough for two seasons.
Giordano Bennetti, Swindon,
Berbatov is better than Cantona, and he'll make a much bigger impact at Man Utd. Period. All those youngsters- Ronaldo, Rooney, Nani and Anderson will became more completed players thanks to his abilities.
Valentin, London,
If Dimitar's going to live in Manchester - maybe he can borrow Steve McClaren's big umbrella?
Leigh Vernier, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
How does a Barcelona reject and a fine right back make Chelsea overwhelming favorites for title?
If anything, I would say the Berbatov signing makes United heavy favorites. An Anelka meltdown (likely) and Drogba injury (not unlikely) would leave Chelsea floundering. A not unlikely scenario ...
Mike, Houston, USA
Well it looks like the press will finally get what they have been craving for the over the past year or so. You journo's just couldnt resist at any opportunity to stoke the fires for this move...it is just not fashionable in your eyes to have world class players at clubs other than the big four...
David, London,
Assuming Utd get Berbatov , then its all over - Utd will be an even better team than last year
Ian, Belfast,
Should really have known better than to read this article after I'd got as far as the title and the author. Think title could have been better designed for the Chelsea fans though as they'd surely appreciate this pro-Chelsea propaganda more than those unwittingly allured by the name "Berbatov".
Nick, Scotland,
"It is not only that he is prolific: " He might have scored a few goals for spurs but how many of them were the all important league goals? I think he barely got double figures in the premiership last season.
Chris Forte, Geoje Island, South Korea
If Spurs are to join the elite vital they STOP losing best players to the elite. They must now buy a Berbatov replacement at least as good. And finish high enough to attract world class players in future seasons.
Tomorrow's Premier will have three tiers: elite rich, nobodies, doomed paupers.
Leigh Vernier, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Tony played for Chelsea between 1992-1994, that explains the 10 points.
Dawood Khan, Gauteng, South Africa
With Berba at OT Man Utd will win by ten points. Without him the title is a tight affair. Chelsea have a lot to prove with the money they always spend and a new manager.
James, London,
Tony, United are much stronger than last season. The development of last seasons new boys, Anderson and Nani in particular has been fantastic. Chelsea; another year older, another new manager, another set of expensive new "veterens"....The Premiership is "No Country For Old Men". Viva Renaldo!
ste, manchester,
I still think it's a better deal for Spurs than Utd.With £25million or more to invest in say 2 quality players,I think Spurs have got the better of the deal. With this money they can really strengthen their squad.I also think Utd.have gone for the wrong player;Darren Bent would have been my choice.
Mike, Dunstable, England
United won the title by 2 points last season.
What has happened to turn this into a 10 point lead?
The signing of Deco?
Clutching at straws Cas.
Chelsea will fail to win the title and once again blame injuries
Dan, Bradford,
What a load of rubbish from this Tony guy. 10 points behind Chelsea without Berbatov. You high?
James Cattlemoore, Luton, UK
Berbatov is obviously a fantastic talent, and as a Spurs fan I will miss the entertainment he and Keane provided (assuming the transfer happens). However, from Utd's angle I think that a striker in the mould of Ruud was in order, and as an earlier comment suggested, Huntelaar may have fit the bill.
David Alvey, London,
As a Utd fan I'm not sold on Berbatov, I would prefer Huntelaar, but I am sold on Tottenham looking on fire without him. Regardless of the summer shenanigans, I respect them as the third best entertainers in the league and one of the better teams in Europe. I hope they finish second this year.
Chris, Worthing, England
Berbatov is a moody man who does not contribute enough throughout ninety minutes, Spurs have done nice business off loading a twenty seven year old for Loadsamoney which nobody had heard of before he joined them. Wonder why the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Inter Milan, showed no Interest
brendan Buffini, maidstone, kent
10 pts behind Chelsea without Berbs? A nice attempt to be original and provocative. For this to have been the case, the league and CL double-winners would have to be considerably weaker than last year or Chelsea a lot stronger, but Tony has given evidence of neither. Season lasts beyond September.
Simon, Udono, Japan
Berbatov may be the greatest player since Cantona at Old Trafford and will help MU stop Chelsea from running away with the title according to Cascarino gospel. Yes! Because Rafa and Wenger will be snoring in their sleep, innit?
Tony Amadi, Abuja, Nigeria
I heard the Leyton Orient are prepared to ground share, so as long as we can find enough fans to fill the place, we're laughing.
Come on you Sp*rs, we can knock off the 38 points we finished behind the scum last year, fourth place here we come.
Mathew, Brighton, UK
But he hasn't gone yet, has he Tony - despite you wanting this transfer for over a year!
Dave, Edinburgh, Uk
If we can get £28,000,000 for a player who cost £11,000,000 2 years ago then that is good business. Any news on the new stadium?
Steve.;
Steven Prussia, Edgware, Middlesex
Did I just read the names Cantona, Van Vasten and Berbatov in the same paragraph? Berbatov is not half the player that the other two were, especially the Dutch maestro.
Richard, London, UK
Always thought from a distance and the rear that the way Berbatov walks around looking for an opportunity to join play, his positioning and skill were so similar to Erik Cantona that had he been playing in a red kit last season and not a white kit, the deception would have been complete. A great buy
Joe, Geelong, VIC Australia
Doom and gloom? Not really, any Spurs fan who watched us beat Roma 5 - 0 will tell you that Berbatov played almost no part in the victory. We've already moved on and the future's looking brighter still.
Mart, Portsmouth,
