Classic Times Fantasy Football is back. We got two great games for you to play and £100K to be won
Arsenal were closing in last night on the most surprising transfer deal of the summer after making a firm approach to Manchester United about Mikaël Silvestre. The France defender had been expected to join either Manchester City or Sunderland this week after falling surplus to Sir Alex Ferguson’s requirements at Old Trafford, but instead, at the age of 31, he has been offered the chance to revive his career at the Emirates Stadium.
At various stages yesterday Silvestre appeared to be destined to cross the Manchester divide to join City or to tread the increasingly well-worn path from Old Trafford to Sunderland for a reunion with Roy Keane, his former United teammate, but over the course of the evening it emerged that Arsenal had joined - and looked like winning - the race for his signature.
Earlier in the summer Silvestre had rejected moves to Bordeaux and AS Roma, preferring to see out the final year of his contract at Old Trafford as a back-up defender, but the chance to join Arsenal is one he will not pass up if, as seems likely, United accept a £750,000 bid and allow him to discuss personal terms with the London club.
No player has moved directly between United and Arsenal since Ferguson made Viv Anderson his first signing in 1987 and few would have identified Silvestre as a candidate to buck the trend. The defender quickly became a first-team regular after a £4 million move from Inter Milan in September 1999, impressing Ferguson with his form at left back or centre half, but his opportunities have been limited since the signings of Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra in January 2006. Silvestre had been unofficially available for transfer for at least 18 months before Arsène Wenger decided that his compatriot offered the necessary cover and experience for the Arsenal defence.
Dead certs
Roy Keane, the Sunderland manager, is expected to draw some consolation from missing out on the defender by signing David Healy, the Northern Ireland forward, from Fulham. Healy had a medical yesterday and is expected to complete his move by the end of the week, with Dickson Etuhu, the midfield player, moving the other way.
West Bromwich Albion have secured a club-record £4.9 million deal to sign Borja Valero, the 23-year-old midfield player, from Real Mallorca, on a four-year deal after he passed a medical yesterday. West Brom also hope to sign Oscar Trejo, the 20-year-old Argentine forward, from the same Spanish club.
Another Real Mallorca midfield player, Jordi López, has joined Blackburn Rovers on trial.
Decent bets
Manchester City hope to secure the long-term future of Michael Johnson, the England Under-21 midfield player, after holding talks with his representatives yesterday. Johnson has attracted interest from Arsenal, Aston Villa and Everton, but he hopes to stay at City.
Derby County have signed Nacer Barazite, the 18-year-old Arsenal midfield player, on a one-month loan.
Everton are continuing their search for reinforcements, with Stéphane M’Bia, the Rennes and Cameroon forward, pleading yesterday with his employers to be allowed to move to join the Merseyside club.

Doesn't Ferguson refuse to sell to competitors? Remember the Heinze to Liverpool debacle. If Silvestre goes to Arsenal does this means Alex has no memory/integrity/doesn't rate Arsenal/doesn't rate Silvestre - or all of the above?
Geraldine, maybe wants a loyal servant to have a final payday.
Richard Dow, stenhousemuir, Escocia
Funny enough how many people believe everything they read. In fact, almost none of the players rumoured to join Arsenal in the past years actually became signings. I wouldn't be suprised if Wenger is the one having the biggest laugh about this story...
Ilja, Sliema, Malta
stop ,look at the squad and you will note nearly a dozen midfielders.so this cry to spend on 2 more is puzzling.wenger has nurtured the younger players on a passing game and the likes of denilson and diaby deserve a chance as the holding player.denilson in particular is a better passer than flamini.
g.o'sullivan, london, england
Silvestre would be a great signing, to help Arsenal for the next couple of years. Any other defenders of his calibre would be costing £10mil or more. The other defenders similar to him tend to be playing for the big clubs already and so wouldn't come to Arsenal. In Arsene We Trust
Charlie, London, UK
Not sure I agree with that. I'd rather have him as a squad player in our team rather than the likes of the Eboues & Songs we currently employ..... We just have to splash the cash for the quality holding midfielder we so desperately need..
Dan, London, England
Doesn't ferguson refuse to sell to direct competition? - remember the Heinze to Liverpool debacle? If Silvestre goes to Arsenal does this mean Alex lacks memory or integrity, doesn't consider Arsenal a threat or that Silvestre is no good?

I was praying Spurs would grab Silvestre.
Only 750,000. He's kept out of Maniacs U team by the best central defender in UK, Vidic.
Spurs still need two top class defenders.
Leigh Vernier, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Don't agree Glum! Silvestre is the kind of experienced, versatile signing that would be a great addition to the squad, remember what happens when Toure or Gallas are injured! That's right! Senderos! I think this would be a good signing.
Mark, London,
This will not happen, what was it Fergie said regarding the Heinze to Liverpool transfer, we never sell to a rival. Unless of course he is dismissing Arsenal as a rival.
Frank Maker, Montreal, Canada
silvestre still has a lot to offer any club (including united). his central defensive partnership with ferdinand was the best in the league and his attacking ability at left back is not far off evra's. he might be a bit suspect positionally, but his tackling is as good as any premiership player.
jem, london, uk
The EPL should be very scared...the only reason that AFC have not won anything recently is because of their lack of quality cover.
Where as Man U dive into the market in times of crisis (Larsson) or CFC have ridiculous cover (Essien, Bridge, SWP) AFC make do with teenage potential.

It is interesting that Messrs Parris, Ezat and Glum seem to know so much more about football than one of the greatest managers in football. Wenger has never been thought of as a fool, at least not by anyone who actually KNOWS anything about football management.
Marc, Paris, France
I think it is a fantastic bit of business by Wenger. Silvestre will never be first choice, let's be clear. But if Toure or Gallas are unavailable, what are the back up options? Senderos (proven to be unreliable in CL games - and that's being kind) or Djorou (Not enough experience.....yet). Good move
Dan, Leeds,
Arsenal's greatest threat to the PL has always been Manchester United. So for Wenger to opt for his arch rival's rejected player is clearly a defeatist move.
Sir Alex is sure to be having a laugh!
Joel Parris, High Wycombe, England
Silvestre would be a great addition to the Arsenal squad bringing years of premier and Champions league experience gained with England's other top team to aid in the development of Senderos and Djourou. Rolls Royce defender. Brilliant move and for an unbelievable price!
kl, London,
Arsene Wenger is transforming Arsenal from a EPL Title Contender to League 2 hopeful. What is this? After a long wait to get 1 or 2 midfielder playmaker he is getting rejected and outcast MU player!!!
Ezat, KL, Malaysia
Good heavens!! I know we were strapped for cash but I had no idea we were so skint that we would have to settle for a ManU reject. Be afraid, be very afraid fellow Gooners.
Glum, Sussex, England
