Friday's transfer gossip: Redknapp targets Ljungberg
Transfer updates: all the moves, rumours and red herrings as they happen
Tottenham Hotspur have reached a verbal agreement with Manchester United to sell Dimitar Berbatov when they complete the signing of Roman Pavlyuchenko. The Russia forward is expected to arrive in London today for a medical after Tottenham agreed a fee of about £12.5 million with Spartak Moscow. Tottenham are separately trying to sign a young striker after selling Robbie Keane to Liverpool this summer.
Sir Alex Ferguson has expressed his frustration at Tottenham’s intransigence over Berbatov and he suggested that United would reluctantly proceed this season without the Bulgaria forward unless Tottenham backed down over their demand for a £30 million fee. United made a second bid, thought to be about £25 million, last weekend. David Gill, the United chief executive, may try to conclude a few details with Damien Comolli, the Tottenham sporting director, in Monaco today.
Hans Segers, the former Tottenham goalkeeping coach, gave warning that Berbatov could unsettle the Old Trafford dressing-room. “He is one of the best strikers around, but the way he doesn’t pull his weight for the team is not good for the team,” Segers said. “He is a big sulker. He goes in silent sulks — he is quite a loner in that way. It is not easy to communicate with him and that is a shame because he is a very good player. So wherever he goes, the manager will have a tough job with him.”
Decent bets
Walter Pandiani is among the attacking players being considered by West Ham United. The Uruguay striker, who scored six league goals for Birmingham City over the course of 2005, is playing for Osasuna and is available on loan or for a modest fee. Fulham and Stoke City are also interested in the 32-year-old.
West Ham are also considering Edison Cavani, the Palermo forward, and Stephen Appiah, but the latter deal is complicated by uncertainty as to whether the Ghana midfield player is a free agent from Fenerbahçe.
Bolton Wanderers have been linked with Valmiro Lopes Rocha, Espanyol’s 27-year-old midfield player.
SV Hamburg are leading the race to sign Thiago Neves, the Brazil left winger, ahead of Manchester City and Atlético Madrid. “We have reached an agreement with Thiago Neves,” Bernd Hoffman, the Hamburg president, said. City appear to be close to a deal for Pablo Zabaleta, the Espanyol right back, which would allow Vedran Corluka to move to Tottenham.
Kamil Zayatte’s proposed move to Everton has stalled, with Newcastle United also interested in the Young Boys Berne defender. The Guinea player, 23, was on trial at Goodison Park. “There might be a slight problem between David Moyes [the Everton manager] and his president regarding the signing,” Roger Boli, the player’s agent, said.
Dead certs
Keith Andrews has completed a move to Blackburn Rovers after a fee of £750,000 rising to £1.3 million was agreed with MK Dons for the midfield player. Andrews, 27, who will be reunited with Paul Ince, the Blackburn manager, has been left out of the past three squads as speculation intensified about his future. “I was pleading with the chairman at MK Dons to get the deal done, and the chance to work with the gaffer once again was obviously a key factor,” Andrews said.
“Coming here is a fantastic opportunity for me and it is one that I am really relishing and I hope to take with both hands.” Andrews was named the League Two player of the year last season. “He is going to be a big loss,” Roberto Di Matteo, the MK Dons manager, said. “It is the player’s wish.”
Moritz Volz, the former Arsenal right back, will spend the final season of his Fulham contract on loan at Ipswich Town, who have also accepted an undisclosed bid from Crystal Palace for Alan Lee, the 30-year-old striker.
Linvoy Primus, the central defender, has joined Charlton Athletic on a three-month loan from Portsmouth.
