Bolton 0 - 0 West Brom
Prior to this match, four of the six Premier League games between these clubs
had been drawn and this was no different as both sides spurned chances to
break the deadlock. West Brom were the side that looked more comfortable at
first. Jussi Jaaskelainen, the Bolton goalkeeper, was forced to make a
wonderful save from James Morrison and the home side's frustrations were
shown by Kevin Nolan, the midfield player, who was lucky to stay on the
pitch after a hard tackle following a booking. Ishmael Miller missed a
glorious chance for West Brom to take the lead after 20 minutes of the
second half, but the former Manchester City forward shot over. He then
missed an easier chance when Kim hit the underside of the bar from far out
and Miller could only head the loose ball straight at Jaaskelainen. Bolton’s
chances came mainly from Mustapha Riga free kicks, while Kevin Davies had a
couple of ‘goals’ correctly ruled out for offside, as did Danny Shittu. In
all, a goalless draw was a fair result.
Everton 0 - 3 Portsmouth
Portsmouth got their first points of the season with a sparkling win at
Goodison Park with Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch beginning to show the
promise that Portsmouth fans had expected. Harry Redknapp’s side deservedly
took the lead on the twelfth minute when Jermain Defoe scored his first goal
in nine games and Portsmouth's first this season. He took a knock-down from
Peter Crouch and caught Tim Howard, the Everton goalkeeper, out on his near
post. Then Armand Traore won the ball in the Everton penalty and forced a
save from Howard. At the other end, David James made a wonderful save from
Mikel Arteta on 23 minutes and soon afterwards Yakubu came closest to
scoring, but was denied by Younes Kaboul almost on the line. It was
Portsmouth who got the next goal from Glen Johnson on 40 minutes. The full
back advanced to the penalty area, played a one-two with Defoe and coolly
put the ball past Howard with his supposed weaker left foot. Everton almost
got their way back into the match soon after the restart when Mark Halsey
awarded a penalty for Johnson's block on James Vaughan, but James again
pulled off a fine save from Yakubu's spot-kick. Despite the miss, Everton
maintained the pressure on the Portsmouth goal and had a couple of further
claims for penalties denied,. The pressure all came to naught though as
Portsmouth, on a counter-attack, stretched their lead. Peter Crouch looks to
have scored his first goal for the club, following up after Howard had
tipped Defoe's shot on to the bar, although the goal might have been given
to Defoe as his shot may have crossed the line. That killed off Everton, who
have now lost their second straight home match.
Hull 0 - 5 Wigan
Hull's dream start to the Premier League came to earth with a big bump as
Wigan, without a point so far this season, hit five goals past a porous home
defence. Hull got off to a poor start when Samuel Ricketts scored an own
goal from a Wigan corner after just five minutes. Things soon got worse
following a Hull corner in the thirteenth minute. Wigan counter-attacked
with too much ease and Antonio Valencia, fed by Amr Zaki, sprinted from the
halfway line to go one-on-one with Boaz Myhill, the Hull goalkeeper, the
Wigan midfield player stroking the ball home. Thereafter the home side
struggled to create much, showing why they have made a £7 million bid for
Fraizer Campbell, the Manchester United striker, who spent last season on
loan at the KC Stadium. In the second half Hull began to show some more
teeth in the second period with Richard Garcia forcing a good stop from
Chris Kirkland and Dean Windass was brought on for Geovanni in the search
for goals. But Hull’s problems were at the other end as Valencia received a
cross and cut the ball back to Zaki for the Egypt forward to score his third
goal of the season. The Hull defence continued to show its weakness when
Emile Heskey found it all too easy to get on to a long ball and score, and
Zaki got the fifth with a long-range shot that hit the underside of the bar
and went over the goalline in the 81st minute.
Middlesbrough 2 - 1 Stoke
Middlesbrough continued their positive start to the season but were made to
work hard by ten-man Stoke. Stoke were in the game until the 35th minute
when Amdy Faye got a deserved red card for a two-footed tackle on Mohamed
Shawky. From the resulting free kick Afonso Alves got his first of the
season with a great shot into the top corner. Tuncay Sanli and Jeremie
Aliadiere then missed chances to double the lead in the second half as the
home side dominated. Seyi Olofinjana then brought down Alves for a penalty,
but Stewart Downing hit the bar with his spot-kick. Boro were made to pay
for all their missed chances when Justin Hoye, the full back making his
league debut after moving from Arsenal, was put under pressure by Dave
Kitson, it seemed illegally, and turned a cross into his own net. But
justice was restored when Tuncay restored the home side’s lead beating the
offside trap with ten minutes remaining.
West Ham 4 - 1 Blackburn
Paul Ince had an unhappy return to Upton Park as he saw his Blackburn side go
down heavily to West Ham, whose two wins after three games make it their
best start to a Premier League campaign in nine years. Ince got the
inevitable boos on his appearance in the dugout, but it was his side that
created the early chances. Vince Grella, making his debut for the away side
after a £4 million move from Torino, made his mark early with a terrible
tackle on Scott Parker and was lucky to escape with just a booking. He was
later replaced by another new signing, Keith Andrews, for his own good. It
was West Ham who took the lead when Julien Faubert's corner was headed home
from six yards by Calum Davenport, with Paul Robinson, the Blackburn
goalkeeper, nowhere. The home side doubled their lead soon afterwards with
Mark Noble's shot turned into his own net by Christopher Samba, the
Blackburn defender. The away side responded within a couple of minutes with
Jason Roberts turning well in the penalty area and firing the ball home, but
their hopes of a recovery at what is a bogey ground for them were hit when
Roque Santa Cruz, the striker, was forced to go off after turning on his
ankle. His replacement, Matt Derbyshire, soon put the ball in the back of
the net from a free kick, but it was ruled out for offside when perhaps he
was not. Shortly after the second half got under way, Blackburn were awarded
a spot kick when Carlton Cole was ruled to have handled the ball, but Jason
Roberts was denied a second goal by Robert Green's save. Derbyshire then
almost got the equaliser but could only lift the ball over Green and onto
the roof of the net. Robinson redeemed his earlier error with two saves from
Craig Bellamy, a second-half substitute, and Carlton Cole, but the two
strikers eventually made the game safe in stoppage time. As Blackburn
pressed for the equaliser it left them open to the counter-attack and in
stoppage time Bellamy beat the offside trap to score. It got worse for
Blackburn when Cole turned neatly in the area to score West Ham’s fourth and
ease the pressure on Alan Curbishley, the manager.
