Classic Times Fantasy Football is back. We got two great games for you to play and £100K to be won
Harry Redknapp, the Portsmouth manager, has been told that the club must try to sell another player today as financial realities continue to catch up with the FA Cup holders. But any rivals hoping to plunder the South Coast club’s squad for bargains can forget about the England pair behind Saturday’s victory: Jermain Defoe, who scored twice and had a foot in the other goal, and David James, who, as usual, pulled off saves at key moments, including from a penalty.
Defoe’s first goal on Saturday showed his characteristic, single-minded determination to get in a shot after taking Peter Crouch’s headed flick. The second, though, revealed a vision and delicacy of touch for which he is less renowned, as he chipped Tim Howard from 20 yards, his 100th league goal going in off the bar.
Defoe paid tribute to Crouch, his forward partner, and James. “It takes time to work on a partnership,” he said. “We have had difficult games and we have kept working. We know we have quality. The goalkeeper was fantastic again. It was a great save in the first half and then when you save a penalty, you think it’s going to be your day.”
Everton assisted with some wretched defending, which was good news for Portsmouth, who were without a point or league goal since mid-April at the start of this match. The other factor was Redknapp’s adoption of a 3-5-2 system that plays to the strengths of a squad that is full of centre backs but has no natural wide attackers. Defending may not be Glen Johnson’s strength, but as a wing back he is a different proposition. He scored a deftly taken goal after 40 minutes, helped by Leighton Baines’s failure to track him as he exchanged passes with Defoe.
Not that the match was anywhere near as one-sided as the score suggests. James had to make a superb save to prevent Mikel Arteta equalising after 23 minutes and was fortunate that Yakubu Ayegbeni made such a poor attempt to convert a penalty early in the second half. Moreover, Younès Kaboul had to scoop the ball from the path of Yakubu after an error by James had allowed James Vaughan to head towards the unguarded goal.
David Moyes, the Everton manager, was pleased by the effort that his players put in, but he knows that he must continue to work on finding reinforcements for his threadbare squad before the transfer window closes tonight. “Big moments didn’t go for us, but it doesn’t take away the fact we conceded three poor goals,” he said. “I am very worried about the games to come because we don’t have that much time to find a side and a winning formula. But if you look at the big teams this year, Manchester United and Arsenal, they have bought very few players. That has to tell you something about the transfer market. We’re quite a long way away yet, but we’ve got time to do something about it.”
