George McCartney moved to Sunderland last night, becoming their tenth signing of the summer. The Northern Ireland left back joined for up to £4.5 million from West Ham United, who had given him a new five-year contract in July when they turned down the same offer from the Wearside club.
Alan Curbishley, the West Ham manager, had said that no player would leave Upton Park after the sale of Anton Ferdinand to Roy Keane’s team. However, it is believed that McCartney asked to leave because he wanted to return to the North East for family reasons, two years after he left Sunderland.
Newcastle United signed Xisco — full name Francisco Jiménez Tejada — from Deportivo La Coruña on a five-year deal for £5.7 million, rising to £8.2 million. The 22-year-old was on loan at UD Vecindario, of Spain, scoring five goals in consecutive matches. Kevin Keegan, the Newcastle manager, also signed Ignacio González, the Uruguay midfield player, on a season-long loan from Valencia.
Louis Saha has signed a two-year deal with an option of a third season at Everton, who agreed to a pay-per-play deal with Manchester United. The France forward, 30, passed a medical despite having a calf injury. He scored 42 goals in four years at Old Trafford, where his time was blighted by injuries.
Danny Higginbotham has rejoined Stoke City from Sunderland on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee. The 29-year-old defender returns to the Britannia Stadium after one year with Sunderland in the wake of a £3 million move in the summer of 2007.
Liverpool signed Albert Riera from Espanyol as part of an £8 million package in which Steve Finnan, the Ireland right back, moved in the opposite direction. Finnan, who was valued at £1.5 million, was allowed to leave on a free transfer.
And the deals that almost happened
Everton had a £3.5 million bid for Stephen Hunt, the Ireland winger, turned down by Reading. However, the Merseyside club were unable to secure a work permit for Victor Obinna Nsofor after agreeing a deal to sign the Nigeria forward on loan from Inter Milan. The striker moved from Chievo Verona this summer after helping his country to secure the silver medal at the Beijing Olympics last month.
Fulham will return to sign Kagiso Dikgacoi in January after failing to obtain a work permit for the defensive midfield player. The Golden Arrows player, who had a medical, has not played in the required proportion of matches for South Africa. “I was happy when Fulham told me they will invite me again next year in January,” he said. “It shows they liked what they saw in me.”
Joe Ledley was in limbo last night after Cardiff City rejected a bid of up to £5 million from Stoke City. The Wales midfield player, who had also attracted interest from Everton, has two years remaining on his contract.
