Graphic: Two's a crowd - where Robinho fits in
Not happy with signing Robinho for a British record fee of £34.2 million, Manchester City's prospective new owners are weighing up a staggering £135 million offer for Cristiano Ronaldo in January as the club attempt to topple the established elite of European football.
Having lived in the shadow of Manchester United for so long, City could be about to test the resolve of their fierce rivals with an offer that would obliterate the world transfer record and send shock waves through the sport and beyond.
Moves for Fernando Torres, the Liverpool striker, and Cesc Fàbregas, the Arsenal midfield player, could also be in the pipeline as City prepare to undergo a transformation that could overshadow even that experienced by Chelsea after Roman Abramovich's arrival at Stamford Bridge in 2003. A transfer pot of at least £250 million has been earmarked for Mark Hughes, the City manager, to spend over the next three transfer windows, with a minimum of 18 players wanted.
The extraordinary revelations come as the ruling al-Nahyan family of Abu Dhabi moves closer to completing a £200 million buyout of City from Thaksin Shinawatra.
United resisted an offer in excess of £45 million from Real Madrid for Ronaldo this summer, but rejecting a bid worth three times that amount is a different proposition, even if it does come from neighbours who, until 48 hours ago, registered as little more than a dot on the Barclays Premier League champions' landscape.
To put it into context, £135 million is more than twice United's operating profits for the 2006-07 season, more than double the amount that Randy Lerner paid for Aston Villa two years ago and almost three times the world record transfer fee of £47.5 million that Juventus received from Real for Zinédine Zidane in 2001.
Whether such a mammoth offer materialises remains to be seen, but having outbid Chelsea for Robinho, the Brazil forward, late on Monday, Dr Sulaiman al-Fahim, the prominent Middle East businessman who is serving as the front man for the al-Nahyan family, believes that City must pursue players of the calibre of Ronaldo if they are serious about overhauling Real and United as the pre-eminent force in European football.
“Ronaldo has said he wants to play for the biggest club in the world, so we will see in January if he is serious,” al-Fahim said. “Real Madrid were estimating his value at $160 million [about £90 million], but for a player like that, to actually get him, will cost a lot more - I would think $240 million. But why not? We are going to be the biggest club in the world, bigger than both Real Madrid and Manchester United.”
Al-Fahim is expected to announce his “dream team” in an interview to be published in Arabian Business magazine on Sunday. As well as Ronaldo, Torres and Fàbregas, the list of players is understood to feature Ronaldinho, the Brazil forward whom City tried to sign this summer before he moved to AC Milan from Barcelona. Al-Fahim told The Times yesterday that City could try again to sign Ronaldinho, but he insisted that Hughes would decide which players are brought to the club and that money would not be spent recklessly. Al-Fahim hopes to meet Hughes this week.
“Hopefully, we can bring Ronaldinho to Manchester City,” al-Fahim said. “We will support the club in any way we can, which means bringing in the best players in the world. Obviously we will have to speak to Mark to discuss which players he wants. He must have his say.”
Robinho, who will wear the No10 shirt, met Hughes in London yesterday before flying to Brazil to join the national squad before their World Cup qualifying matches away to Chile on Saturday and at home to Bolivia three days later. He will make his debut at the City of Manchester Stadium a week on Saturday against Chelsea, the club who pursued him all summer, only to be trumped by City after refusing to increase their £29 million bid.
Robinho's arrival, and the impending takeover by the al-Nahyan family, prompted a rush for tickets among supporters yesterday. Having sold fewer than ten season tickets on Monday, City sold 340 yesterday afternoon.
“I liked the plans that Manchester City have and I want to succeed with them,” Robinho, who will earn £95,000 a week after tax, said. “I met with the manager and it went very well. I know that he was a great player and I think that will be a big help to me.”

This is ugly and showing why football will gradually lose its appeal. If money is the key factor and all you have to do is buy trophies where does it end? Money doesn't make a team, chemistry and a good manager also play a part. Chelsea haven't done as well as spending suggests I hope they fail.
Colin Wilson, Camberley, England
They can spend all the money they want, and buy the worlds best players, but .......... can they be made into a team!!!!!! Thats the question. Chelsea tried this and came close to dominating english and european football, but you need a very good manager to make a team out of a group of players.
Teresa, Norwich, England
you all wouldn't be groaning if ronaldo was linked to your club!
enough said.
dan, manchester,
Hopefully there are still some players who actually want to win trophies and not just collect pay packets. In which case City will still be years away from attracting he very best as they can't offer any player Champions League football and that's the stage all the best players want to perform on.
Chris H, Woking, UK
Would'nt it be great to see C.Ronaldo go to City and all those Man. Utd fans expression mirroring Ferie's. Hopefully it will push Man.utd into 5th place....And still struggling to catch up with our 5th European Cups. Oh but they only will have to play against non-champions, still not the same !!!!
Mohammed, London, UK
Could I have a tenner, please?
Simon, London, UK
This all seems to smack of a little envy chaps, after all man u and others have been ruining football for decades. I also can't think of set of more worthy fans. The king is dead long live the king.
anthony Hall, wilmslow, cheshire
If any of this happens, Torres/ Gerrard leaving Liverpool, Ronaldo being bought for 135m etc etc, I'm not going to have anything to do with Premiership football. It makes me sick.
Looks like I'll be devoting my support to the likes of Accrington Stanley and Oxford Utd...
Tom, Skipton, United Kingdom
Gloabl caps on transfers and salary caps please.
Jag, Nottingham,
What?? They're not going to buy Messi??
Shabba, Maastricht, Netherlands
We'll see. The Premier league has become the publicity playpit of billionaires, high profile political businessmen in need of a global security blanket, and the clever PR person. Newcastle was going to be sold to a huge global finance group that turned out to be a land banking company
Carlos, London, UK
If all goes through for city i imagine they'll be in a heap of debt 5 to 10 years from now. too bad all the supporters have pound signs covering their eyes right now. they'll never see it coming
ste holt, uk,
James, Liverpool: .
It's not the club owner trying to buy players who over inflate the price of a player - look to people like Calderon of Real Madrid who happliy triple the price when big clubs want to buy and City who overpaid just to gain media attention, not because they had been tracking him
Adi, Rickmansworth, Hertfordshie
Why not?
After all it was Robinho's dream to play for Chelsea and look at his statement today:
"Im very happy to be here. I knew Manchester City are a very big club, theres a great team already and this is an exciting project"
We will soon here the same waffle from Ronaldo...
Ilja, Sliema, Malta
If they do what they say they are going to do then it will ruin football. Its as simple as that. Chelsea already played their part in overinflating prices and ruining careers. Surely the monopoly and mergers commitee should look at this?
Andy, Salford,
C Ronaldo is not worth that much, waste of money, imagine he gets injured...
Boissier, Paris, France
I don't envy Mark Hughes. He should get a good season under his belt and skip over to the relatively sensible Man U. Mourinho for City anyone? Can't see Ronaldo going to City though; there's even less sun in Eastlands than in Old Trafford.
Nigel, London, UK
The whole thing is very bad taste and brash. Reeks of new money, they think they can simply buy instant success. al-Fahim should realise the difference between 'biggest" and "richest" club in the world, it would take 50 years for them to be bigger than Man Utd or Real. It is a sad day for football.
Hugh, UK,
How to ruin football, Ambramovich almost succeeded but seems to have tightened his belt, now this clown who has probably never kicked a ball in his life will pay 135 m for one player? its a farce.
Robinho 32 m, wait until Jan and he is playing Middlesborough away in the snow, waste of money!
James, Liverpool, England
Dream team not including the biggest sighning so far?
And he was unhappy at Real for the club looking for someone else in his position.
The future is going to be fun.
Mike, Chertsey, UK
