David Gill, the Manchester United chief executive, says the club would be forced to consider Manchester City's proposed £135 million offer for Cristiano Ronaldo, but said he had taken the reports "with a pinch of salt".
Last week, Dr Sulaiman Al-Fahim, the businessman behind the takeover of City, said he would be prepared to make a world record bid for the Portugal winger during the January transfer window. Gill said, faced with a serious offer of that size, any club would have to consider it.
"It was an interesting comment, I think it's a fan's-type comment," he said. "It's interesting when Alex [Ferguson] mentioned the Dimitar Berbatov signing in advance that complaints were made to the Premier League.
"He mentioned Torres and Fabregas in the same article so I think we will treat that with a pinch of salt.
"I have never met the gentleman. That is a fantastic amount of money and would turn the industry upside down so I can't believe he is serious at those sorts of levels.
"Ultimately we would discuss any offer with Alex and the owners, as that sort of money is very large for one person.
"But we are not in the market to sell our best players."

no true/loyal players? giggs? scholes? gary neville? inter milan tried to buy giggs and scholes every year for about ten years. were the players thinking of money? I doubt scholes even knows how much he earns. he just signs and goes back to work.

As a football fan, regardless of what club you are supporting,it is apparent/obvious that no single player will become loyal without the "money" factor.Having said that there is no "true" football player nowadays as compared to the old days where honour and pride come first. So enjoy "money" football!

Richard,
I can't think of a better player that epitomises City's spirit better than Joey Barton, although Michael Ball comes close. These are the types of players that are what City are all about.

why would u go after ronaldo when lionel messi is a far better player and probably available for half the price you could get ronaldo for via a buyout clause.
will, grimsby, uk
As a City fan I hope that te Abu Dhabi Group are not serious about this. I would not like to see CR in a City shirt. I do not feel that he represents the spirit of sport or of the club and I, for one, would take a "lesser", but more honest, player first. Ditto Droghba's "Bamby on Ice" alter ego.
