Kevin Nolan has claimed that even Manchester United's players were surprised at being awarded a penalty in their 2-0 win over Bolton Wanderers on Saturday. The Bolton captain said that Cristiano Ronaldo, who had fallen after being tackled in the area by Jlloyd Samuel, had told the referee, Rob Styles, that he had not been tripped.
"Ronaldo was on the floor saying, 'I didn’t want a penalty!'," Nolan said. "I don’t think one of them put their hands up asking for a penalty. [Darren] Fletcher’s going, 'It’s not a penalty', [Carlos] Tevez is going, 'It’s not a penalty'. Twenty players who were in the box at the time knew it wasn’t a penalty. But the man who was in black had the final say. They couldn’t believe their luck. But you’re at United and unfortunately that happens.
"It does strike fear into you when you look at this magnificent stadium. Maybe that’s what’s happened to the referee. He said he thought Jlloyd took Ronaldo before the ball. It didn’t make sense to me at all."
Styles, who was demoted twice last season after awarding two erroneous penalties, has reportedly e-mailed his manager at the Professional Referees’ Association and asked for an apology to be passed on to Bolton.
However, Gary Megson said he would not welcome a call from Styles.
"I don't want him to ring me up," he said. "I would have more respect from him if he just holds his hands up and says he was wrong."
Meanwhile, Fletcher has said that United should not expect an easy ride against Aalborg tomorrow. Having opened their Champions League defence with a home draw against Villarreal, the Danish team lie in wait, with United needing three points.
"It is not going to be quite that easy to beat them," Fletcher said. "Aalborg might not be a household name but this is the Champions League. It is a top-quality competition and they are a quality side.
"It is important we get a win tomorrow. The longer you go without one the more worrying it gets. We need to kick-start our Champions League campaign."

The question that still remains at large is..."Would Bolton have said it's not a penalty had one of their players gone down?" Doubt it... Face it, these things happen. This has been a hot topic for a minute now and no matter what one says, The FA are not going to help the Referees. Such a shame...
Ravinder Waraich, Frodsham, United Kingdom
Phil, grow up. Ronnie was taken after the ball, but he was still taken down. There was no dive, and no penalty appeal. Styles made a mistake. Thats the end of it.
ste, manchester,
Then why on earth don't you have action-replays overseen by the extra ref to decide on the validity of the penalty? Could also have sorted out that ridiculous goal that missed the net last week. Bad decisions cost jobs and relegations, stamp them out by using technology.
David, St Albans, UK
i think cristiano is right ,rob was mistaken as for the manchester i think they need to pull up their socks.
mphathi, eskhawini, south africa
Phil, did you even see the incident? It doesn't sound like it. You a ref by any chance? Ronaldo didn't dive, didn't appeal and didn't celebrate after scoring. He was just tackled very well while running fast enough for momentum to take him over, like 100 other normal tackles every game anywhere.
Chris, Worthing, England
Rob and colin, as Stan Collymore, an ex proffessional footballer, said on saturday, Ronaldo is a cheat 6ft1/6ft2 very well built.he should not not go down with the slightest contact fast or slow. Look at your famous George Best,a smaller man he was battered and clattered all over and still stayed up
phil barnes, chichester, uk
It says something when players on both teams agree. The ref got it wrong. Post match Styles should have made a statement admitting to his mistake. It's time for technology to be introduced into the game. If the FA want more respect for referees, they need to bring in live action replay, or a TV-ref.
Lee, London, UK
If he didn't want the penalty, why didn't he blast it over the bar??
B Smith, Cape Town, SA
Ronaldo didn't dive.
Even his opponent, who was on the pitch with him at the time, says he didn't.
Who are you to say otherwise, sat in your armchair at home, listening to biased commentary?
Jay R. Reed, Toronto, Canada
Phil Barnes - have you seen the incident at all? he doesn't dive he just goes to ground with the challenge as the defender gets the ball if you understood football you'd know that this is part of a normal tackle at that pace.
David, N. wales,
If the Manchester players were telling the ref that it wasn't a penalty then Styles has got too big an ego to be refereeing Premiership matches, if he can't admit he was wrong.
Stephen, St. Ives, England
yeah, i guess ronaldo really ought to have anchored himself to the ground and risked serious injury as samuel came through him after getting the ball first, just to appease some bitter sod in chichester.
john, Pendleton,
He didn't want the penalty, but still dusted himself down to slot the spot kick home. Professionalism or poor sportsmanship?
Tim Richards, Camberley, UK
He didnt dive - it was just a good tackle and his momentum took him over.
Why do we only ever highlight foreign players diving? After all Stevie G has his own video clip on Youtube devoted to his ability in this area.
Paul, Salford, England
Phil, When Ronaldo dives - he dives. Watching this game on TV with all of the slow-motion replays, he simply falls over. Watch film of him (and other strikers, let's be fair) diving and they do a fabulous job with backs arched and faces contorted in simulated pain - Oscars anyone?
Rob, Ottawa,
Phil, imagine you're riding a bike at speed. A car starts to pull out of a side road but stops. You serve to avoid it but still end up in the ditch. No contact has been made but you're still in a heap on the ground. Yes, some players do dive but it isn't always as clear cut as it would seem
Colin, Wokingham, UK
Ronaldo didnt dive to influence the refferee ??? He didnt appeal, yeah right , surely the act of diving itself is the appeal ???
phil barnes, chichester, uk
