Styles apology gets him off hook
Rob Styles has escaped punishment for his error in awarding Manchester United a penalty in their 2-0 win against Bolton Wanderers at Old Trafford on Saturday. He will referee the Barclays Premier League match between Tottenham Hotspur and Hull City at White Hart Lane on Sunday. It is common practice for Professional Game Match Officials Limited, the referees' governing body, to “demote” members to the lower leagues - or “rest” them - if they have made a blatant mistake. Styles appears to have been given a reprieve after apologising yesterday.
Tristán on trial
West Ham United have given a trial to Diego Tristán with a view to offering the forward, who is a free agent, a short-term contract to cover for Dean Ashton, who will be out with an ankle injury until January.
2012 stadium will not host top-flight football
Olympic officials have dismissed speculation that a Premier League club could take over the 80,000-capactity athletics stadium after the London Games in 2012. John Armitt, the chairman of the Olympic Delivery Authority, said yesterday that plans for the £496million stadium were not compatible with the needs of a big football club. “There is no prospect of Premiership football [on the site] unless you are seriously considering talking about knocking it down,” he said.
Cahill prepares to fight derby day dismissal
Everton have lodged an appeal with the FA over Tim Cahill's red card against Liverpool on Saturday. The Australia player faces a three-match ban after being dismissed in the 80th minute of the 2-0 defeat at Goodison Park for his lunging tackle on Xabi Alonso. There will be a hearing this week. David Moyes has admitted an FA charge of improper conduct for his reaction to a decision by Alan Wiley during the Barclays Premier League match against Stoke City on September 14.
Bellamy comeback
Craig Bellamy, who has been troubled by groin and hamstring injuries, was selected yesterday by Wales to play in World Cup qualifiers against Liechtenstein at home on October 11 and Germany away four days later.
And finally ...
Liam Lawrence, the Stoke midfield player, is a doubt for the match away to Portsmouth on Sunday after tripping over his dog. The 26-year-old suffered the injury to his ankle yesterday, leaving Tony Pulis, the Stoke manager, with a selection problem. “He stepped over his dog on the stairs, his ankle gave way and he went over on it,” Pulis said. “The scan has shown no break, but we have sent him for another X-ray to make sure. We don't know how serious it is. He may be OK for Portsmouth, but we'll wait and see.”
