Rob Styles is no stranger to controversy. The 44-year-old referee used to be one of the best in the business but he appears to have a blind spot when it comes to deciding what is a penalty and what is a legitimate challenge.
Habib Beye, the Newcastle United defender, got the ball first when he tackled Robinho during his team's 2-2 draw with Manchester City last night, but that did not stop Styles from sending off the Senegal player and awarding the visiting team a penalty.
Boos echoed around the stadium as Robinho beat Shay Given from 12 yards, but Styles is getting used to that kind of reception. Last month at Old Trafford he hit the headlines with a shocking decision when he awarded Manchester United a penalty against Bolton Wanderers after Jlloyd Samuel tackled Cristiano Ronaldo cleanly in the penalty area. United players and supporters were almost as surprised by the decision as Gary Megson, the Bolton manager, who described it as a “cataclysmic cock-up”.
Styles awarded a penalty last season after Steve Finnan did little more than breathe on Florent Malouda during Liverpool's 1-1 draw with Chelsea at Anfield. He apologised to Liverpool for his mistake and was banned from officiating on the next weekend. “He got it wrong,” Keith Hackett, general manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Board, said.
Styles was feeling sorry for himself again last season when, despite having had a clear view of a legitimate shoulder charge by Sun Jihai, then of Manchester City, on Gary McSheffrey, he awarded a penalty to Birmingham City. Once again he was sanctioned by Hackett after Sven-Göran Eriksson, the usually mild-mannered former City manager, questioned his judgment. “The decision against us was, well, wrong,” Eriksson said.
Another manager who will not be sending a Christmas card to Styles is Neil Warnock. The former Sheffield United manager, who is now in charge of Crystal Palace, has not forgiven Styles for awarding Liverpool a penalty against Sheffield United at Anfield in February 2007. Warnock is also haunted by Styles's refusal to award his side a penalty against Manchester United at Old Trafford that April. “I can never, ever forgive Rob Styles,” Warnock said. “Never in a million years. I hope I never see him again.”

Did anybody actually watch the game? Contact was made with the ball first! As the FA Laws state a free kick/penalty should be awarded when the ball is played but when the tackle is reckless, dangerous or with excessive force. This was clearly not the case!
Al, Faye doesnt play for NUFC anymore!
Bobby P, Manchester, UK
it is that the FA realised that in situations like this a red card is the wrong decision.
it was not a professional foul and robinho was not denied a goal-scoring opportunity (as he was subsequently given another opportunity from the spot).
why then should teams be punished twice?
alan, london,
Ian, I beg to differ. Beye did not win the ball - he merely prodded it, leaving it in play with Robinho remaining the closest to it and staring down on goal. However, Robinho could not get to the ball because he was prostrate. And why?
Barry Driscoll, Shortlands, UK
There is no rule about "getting the ball first". All pundits talk about this, but there is no rule stating you can tackle as you like, as long as you touch the ball. It was a clear cut penalty and a red card.
Lars Ulrich, Copenhagen,
Barry Driscoll-Getting the ball first is relevant.
The object of a tackle is to win the ball legally regardless of how far it goes after you win it. 2 players can come together and you can win a tackle with the ball only moving as far as his boot length to take it out of his reach.
Ian Duncan, South Shields, england
Regarding last nights penalty, one thing I think everyone fails to see is that Faye does get the ball but only after going through the player. For me it was a clear penalty and I'm a Liverpool fan!
Al, Manchester,
Beye may have got the ball first, but this is irrelevant.
Where was the ball after the challenge? The answer is not far from where it would have been if Beye hadn't made contact with it, and Robinho would have been favourite to get to it.
But, relevantly, Robinho had been taken him out.
Barry Driscoll, Shortlands, UK
Sorry but I feel I have to correct you. I am no fan of Man City or Rob Style, however Habib Beye did not get the ball first. In fact he clearly took Robiniho out before making a very light contact with the ball. This to me was a clear penalty, Styles for once actually got it right.
