Match report: Everton 1 Liverpool 0 | Gosling cooks Liverpool's goose | Alyson Rudd is an angry viewer | Another bad advert for ITV's coverage | Frustrated with ITV? Tell them what you think here | Grade grovels over ITV goal blunder | Grade grovels over ITV goal blunder
Liverpool were sent crashing out of the FA Cup by Everton at a raucous Goodison Park last night, although as disappointing as the 1-0 defeat was for Rafael Benítez, the manager will have been even more concerned by an injury to Steven Gerrard that has raised further questions about the wisdom of selling Robbie Keane.
Gerrard limped off after 16 minutes of the fourth-round replay with a hamstring problem and his absence was keenly felt as Liverpool, who had been reduced to ten men when Lucas Leiva was sent off for a second bookable offence, were beaten by Dan Gosling’s deflected strike two minutes from the end of extra time — a dramatic moment denied to ITV viewers when live coverage was suddenly replaced by an advertising break.
Gosling, who turned 19 on Monday, could not have asked for a better birthday present as the substitute celebrated his second senior goal for his club on only his fifth appearance.
It was Everton’s first win against one of the “big four” for almost two years and earned David Moyes’s team a fifth-round tie at home to Aston Villa, who beat Doncaster Rovers 3-1 in their replay last night, on Sunday week.
Benítez had dismissed suggestions that allowing Keane to return to Tottenham Hotspur in a cut-price deal this week was a gamble, but the Spaniard may be thinking differently this morning when Gerrard, who has suffered from hamstring problems in the past, goes for a scan, with the Liverpool captain facing a stint on the sidelines.
The loss of Gerrard would be damaging at the best of times, but with Keane now gone, his expected absence could not be more poorly timed with the Barclays Premier League title race entering the final straight and Fernando Torres, who was substituted in extra time, still lacking match fitness.
“I don’t know [how bad Gerrard's injury is], we will have to check after a scan tomorrow,” Benítez, who claimed that Lucas’s dismissal in the 76th minute was the game’s turning point, said. “He was injured and asked for the substitution.”
Benítez made a pointed reference to those who criticised his decision to replace Gerrard during the 1-1 draw away to Wigan Athletic last Wednesday and raised the prospect of another run-in with Fabio Capello, the England manager, who may still want Gerrard to report for international duty before the friendly against Spain in Seville on Wednesday, even if the player is ruled out of his team’s league match away to Portsmouth on Saturday.
“I changed Gerrard the other day when people were saying he has to play every single minute and you’ve seen the consequences today,” Benítez said. “He was tired again but you can see now the consequences. Maybe he has to go to London to do three scans at the same time just in case there are any doubts [among the England medical staff].
“Torres was really tired. He needs to keep playing games and keep training because he is not fully match fit. His match fitness is not the best.”
As demoralising as the result was for Benítez, it was gratefully received by Moyes, whose decision to introduce Gosling paid handsome dividends, even if the Everton manager is expecting another tough game against Villa. “The draws haven’t been kind to us,” Moyes said. “To draw Liverpool and then Aston Villa is really tough.
“We don’t win the Cup tonight, but there’s a lot out there who will feel it’s like that. We have got a long way to go to do that, but it was a great night and a great performance and showed great character from the players to get a result.
“Dan’s a very good boy, he wants to learn. He’s a good trainer, he’s a very well-mannered boy and hopefully we can keep developing him.”
