Manchester City expect to confirm the signing of Carlos Tévez on Tuesday to end their pursuit of the Argentina forward who has played for Manchester United for two seasons.
City want Tévez, who will cost £25.5 million, to join their squad for their pre-season tour to South Africa, which leaves on Wednesday, but they appear to be ready to end a proposed move for Samuel Eto’o.
The Cameroon forward rejected Barcelona’s offer of a new contract yesterday, leaving the Catalan side with little choice but to try to sell him because he has one year left on his present deal. City had a £25 million bid for Eto’o accepted two weeks ago, but they claim that they have run out of patience in waiting for Eto’o to decide whether he wants to move. The 28-year-old would prefer to move to a Champions League club, but so far there have been no other offers made for his services.
Decent bets
Gilberto Silva, the former Arsenal midfield player, has attracted interest from Premier League clubs including Fulham after his performances for Brazil this season. He has two years left on his contract at Panathinaikos, whom he joined last summer, but several Premier League clubs hope to offer him a better platform so that he can secure his starting place in the Brazil team for the World Cup finals next summer.
Modeste M’Bami has had discussions with Portsmouth, but the Marseilles midfield player has also attracted interest from Blackburn Rovers.
Jason Scotland, 30, is close to moving to Wigan Athletic, where he will link up with his former manager, Roberto Martínez, after they agreed a £1.5 million fee with Swansea City for the striker. Scotland scored 24 goals in all competitions last season. Wigan have inquired about Angel Rangel, the Swansea right back.
Manchester United are not interested in Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, the Real Madrid forward who appears set for a move to Stuttgart. The German club appear willing to pay £17.2 million for the Holland forward, who joined from Ajax in January.
Sheffield United have given Everton permission to open talks with Kyle Naughton after accepting a £5 million offer for the defender. United turned down a £3.5 million bid last month.
Fulham have withdrawn from a move for Pawel Brozek, the Wisla Krakow striker, but have said that they need to sign a forward before they will allow Bobby Zamora to leave. Hull City have offered about £5 million for Zamora, who cost £6 million when he moved from West Ham United last summer.
Dead certs
Gelson Fernandes has joined Saint- Étienne for £1.7million from Manchester City. The midfield player made 24 league starting appearances after he joined City for about £4 million two years ago. City have allowed Jô to move on a season-long loan to Everton with the option of a permanent deal. The forward scored five goals on loan at Goodison Park last season.
Youssouf Mulumbu has signed a one-year contract, with an option of one further season, at West Bromwich Albion after completing a £175,000 permanent move to the club, where he had been on loan from Paris Saint-Germain. Daniel Agger, the 24-year-old Liverpool defender, has signed a new five-year deal at Anfield.
Long shots
Patrick Vieira has ruled out a move to Birmingham City. Vieira, 33, has one year left on his contract at Inter Milan, but rumours of interest from Tottenham Hotspur have been denied.
