Patrick Vieira wants a payoff from Inter Milan before he can consider a return to England.
Vieira, 33, has one year left on his £85,000-a-week deal with the Italian champions, but would want compensation for missing out on a year’s salary that is higher than he would receive should he return to the Premier League.
Tottenham Hotspur have offered around £60,000 a week to the France midfield player, who played for nine years at Arsenal. It is believed that Vieira has reconsidered this offer after an initial rejection. Aston Villa and Paris Saint-Germain have expressed an interest but without tabling offers.
Decent bets
Tottenham have held talks with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, the Real Madrid striker, but could miss out after Stuttgart agreed a fee with the Spanish club. Málaga have resurrected their interest in Adel Taarabt after they had been unwilling to meet Tottenham’s loan fee for the attacking player.
Lucas Neill appears set to follow Harry Kewell, his Australia team-mate, and move to Galatasaray. The right back has been offered a net wage of about £30,000 a week and is a free agent after leaving West Ham United, who had offered him £35,000 a week.
Everton have adjusted the schedule of payment for their £4 million bid for Kyle Naughton after Tottenham made a £5 million offer to Sheffield United for the right back, who would prefer to move to Goodison Park.
Wigan Athletic have entered the race for Madjid Bougherra, the Rangers and Algeria centre back.
Sheffield Wednesday have rejected as “derisory” Burnley’s £1.5 million bid for Marcus Tudgay, the striker. Bolton Wanderers hope to sign Zat Knight for £2.5 million once Aston Villa have bought at least one defender as a replacement.
Blackburn Rovers face competition from Guingamp, the French club, for Alharbi El-Jadeyaoui, the Brest midfield player, who is set for a trial at Ewood Park. Stoke City are in talks to sign Aruna Dindane, the Lens and Ivory Coast striker valued at £3.5 million.
West Bromwich Albion have turned down Fulham’s bid for Jonathan Greening, the midfield player.
Wolverhampton Wanderers have made a final offer of £1 million for James McCarthy, the Hamilton midfield player.
Liverpool have offered a trial to five Hungarian players from MTK Budapest. They are Attila Abu, a goalkeeper, Krisztian Adorjan and Patrik Vass, midfield players, Peter Horvath, a striker, and Patrik Poor, a defender.
Dead certs
Hull City are confident that Daryl Murphy will agree to a move after an initial fee of £1.5 million rising to £2.5 million was agreed with Sunderland for the striker.
Burnley have signed Brian Easton from Hamilton for an initial fee of £350,000. The 21-year-old defender signed a three-year contract, having made more than 100 appearances for the Clydesdale Bank Scottish Premier League side.
Didier Zokora, the Tottenham midfield player, has completed his £8.5 million move to Seville.
Long shots
Sporting have said that João Moutinho, their captain, who has been wanted by Everton, cannot leave. “We are not interested,” José Eduardo Bettencourt, the club’s president, said.
