Gareth Barry tried to force through his move to Liverpool yesterday by indicating that his relationship with Martin O’Neill is close to breaking point. But the Aston Villa manager responded last night by insisting that Liverpool must find a further £5 million and meet his valuation of £19 million if they are to land their man.
The England midfield player publicly castigated O’Neill for failing to call him for a month and working as a BBC pundit at Euro 2008 rather than trying to persuade him to stay at Villa Park with an improved contract, but any ploy to induce Villa to lower the price will be staunchly resisted by O’Neill, who has been riled by Liverpool’s approach throughout this saga.
Barry said that it was O’Neill’s “disrespectful” attitude that had convinced him to leave for Liverpool, who had a third bid of £14 million rejected a month ago, but O’Neill responded by indicating that the player had been offered improved terms. Liverpool appear to be struggling to meet Villa’s asking price.
O’Neill admitted for the first time that Villa will allow the 27-year-old to join Liverpool for the right price, but he added the rider that he will otherwise be held to his contract, which has two years to run. Randy Lerner, the Villa chairman, will back O’Neill to the hilt, even if the board at Anfield share Rafael BenÍtez’s view that Villa’s evaluation is unrealistic.
It remains to be seen, though, how high Liverpool will be forced to go to get their man and with money alarmingly tight at Anfield this summer, there is no appetite for a dramatically increased offer. Liverpool’s precise financial situation remains unclear, but, facing annual interest bills in the region of £30 million as a result of a £350 million refinancing deal in January, BenÍtez has been left in no doubt by Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr, the club’s American owners, that he must sell players to raise funds for reinforcements such as Barry, David Silva, the Spain and Valencia midfield player, and Andrea Dossena, the Udinese left back, who will join Liverpool for £7 million this week.
Unless significant sums can be raised, most plausibly through the sales of Xabi Alonso and Peter Crouch, BenÍtez will have to look to players such as James Milner, of Newcastle United, or Stewart Downing, of Middlesbrough, rather than Silva, one of the stars of Euro 2008.
O’Neill took all day yesterday to formulate his response to Barry’s public outburst. “The chairman and myself are surprised at Gareth’s comments,” he said. “Contrary to what has been said, we desperately want to keep him at Villa Park – and he knows that. We asked both Gareth and his agent to consider what had been discussed in our meeting, including a variety of options to incentivise the player.
“Gareth returned from England’s international matches at the beginning of June only to reiterate his intention to join Liverpool. And he told me that directly. But Liverpool’s valuation of Gareth has come short of our own. That remains the case at the moment. We have made our position clear. If Liverpool meet our valuation, Gareth will have his express wish to leave Villa Park granted. Until then he remains very much an Aston Villa player.”
Ideally, O’Neill would like to bring in new players before selling, but Steve Sidwell wants to speak to Luiz Felipe Scolari, the new Chelsea manager, to confirm that he is not wanted at Stamford Bridge before making a £5 million move to Villa. Blackburn Rovers are also loath to sell David Bentley, even for £15 million, before Paul Ince, their new manager, has had the opportunity to talk with the winger when he returns to preseason training on July 7.
Barry had vented his frustration at his manager’s silence. “My mind’s made up, I want to join Liverpool,” he said. “There’s no going back, it’s time for me to move on. I’m desperate to play Champions League football and that’s why I have to leave Villa. It’s seven weeks now since the season finished, but while the gaffer’s found time to be a pundit for the BBC at Euro 2008, he hasn’t found the time to speak to me.”
BenÍtez has sold John Arne Riise to AS Roma for £4 million and would offload Alonso to Juventus and Crouch to Portsmouth or Tottenham Hotspur, if his asking price was met. Charles Itandje, the reserve-team goal-keeper, is set to join Galatasaray for £1.5 million and BenÍtez is also eager to sell Scott Carson and Danny Guthrie, while Ajax have offered £4.5 million for Yossi Benayoun.

Rafa should keep Alonso and not pursue Barry. This is absurd. Alonso is a European champion and the best distributor in Europe. He is the pacemaker of the team.
Jade, Liverpool ,
hargreaves and carrick both cost 18mill. barry is a head of both in england pecking order. 19mill seems realistic to me. i hope villa arent forced into a sale at a lower valuation by liverpool
rb, london,
Well they always say that scousers are always broke and claiming off the DSS and seems it rings true for their football teams too.
Pay up or shut up.
bob, Vancouver,
AB in Dubai says: "Not sure what it is down at Villa park that people are not getting. It's the modern world and money talks."
Indeed, money does talk. Perhaps it's time that Liverpool started "talking" if they want him so much.
nibs, melbourne, australia
We are having a laugh - a laugh at Liverpool - if you want Barry put the money on the table - if you've got it!!
lesley stevens, birmingham, uk
Liverpool are never held to ransom in the transfer market. Make no mistake Barry will come but on Liverpool's terms. I am not sure what the rush is, there is another 8 weeks in the transfer window. I am sure Villa will come grovelling at the end of August and accept the Reds offer.
John, adelaide, australia
Even at £15m Barry is massively over valued. Even more pertinent is that Liverpool don't even need him. Keep Alonso, buy David Villa or Silva and leave Gerrard centre midfield. Get shut of Pennant, Voronin, Crouch and Benayoun.
Marc, Liverpool, Merseyside
Liverpool should call Villa's bluff and walk away, buy Silva and keep Alonso. Take all offers off the table & see how both Barry and Villa react.
Dino, Melbourne, Australia
Villa are having a laugh! 19 million! It's Gareth Barry not Kaka! And he's 27 years old, not 22. Surely there are other players on planet earth who are equal to Barry and for less money. And surely Liverpool pay scouts to do a better job than this! I could have found Barry! and I'm cheaper!
Andrew, Godalming, UK
Yeah enjoy 2 years in the reserves Gareth, but he'd never just run down his contract. Not quite as exciting as the Liverpool bench but hey. Onwards and upwards.
Grifter, Aston, Villa
AB, Dubai - Why should Villa care if Liverpoo pay him more money. You say "It's the modern world and money talks" obviously this is directed at Liverpool, right?
Crawf,Dubai The Sum of £15 is only reasonable from Liverpool's perspective, its a shame that they cant even come up with this amount of £
al, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands
Stephen, St Ives - only applies if transferring outside the UK
If he runs down his contract it will affect his England Career, therefore no Champions League, and No World Cup

Rafa is merely trying to extract a fair price for Crouch, who as an england regular and proven prem/CL goalscorer is worth a lot more than the 7 million quoted, e.g. Johnson 8.5m, Bent 16.5m
Capello informed the squad they need to be playing in the CL to be considered.

Stephen...
It's known as FIFA's article 17 or "The Webster Clause". This is after three years if they signed when under the age of 28 or two years if they signed when 28 or over.
However, in Barry's circumstances I believe you can't invoke article 17 if you're moving to a club in the same league
Rory, London, England
How can Liverpool bleat that £19m is too much, YOU want him and so you have to pay the price.
As for Martin O'Neill managers have to stop the tail wagging the dog. Loyalty and honour aren't a pair of brazillian midfielders.
Ken.Wyatt, Todmorden, UK
Yet another example of contracts not being worth the paper they are written (and signed on). Perhaps if Mr Barry wanted Champions League Football he should have thought of that before he penned his signature OR had a clause written into the contract (and reducing his 'take') to allow such a move.
Ashley Tiffen, Cockermouth, UK
Barry shows that despite our hopes he is just another greedy footballer taking loyal supporters for mugs. Let everyone half decent go to Man Utd, Real Madrid, and Barcelona and then see what kind of game we are left with. Is that what you want Stephen, St Ives? If it happens Liv will be dead too!
Neil, Birmingham, U.K
"a top four finish isnt a given, nor is Champions League success" - Villa Boy.
Are you suggesting it is at Villa; whose last Euro silverware of any type was (I believe) 26 years ago?
How often have Villa finished in the top 4 in the last 26 years?
Your reasoning is flawed. Try again.
Richad, Jersey,
If he wants away that much why doesnt he put in a formal transfer request?
Jack Gallimore, Birmingham, UK
Well done to Martin O for ensuring his employers get the right price.Benitez is a bully & seemed to think he could sell high(Crouch) & buy cheap. As for Barry,it looks as though his agent is pulling the strings.Like lemmings players seem to think Champions league is the be all end all.
Bob Greenaway, Tamarin, Mauritius
I can understand Barry's frustration with MON being a pundit at Euro 2008 when so much work needs to be done at Villa Park.
But going to Liverpool would be a bad move right now. No guarantee of regular first team football and a top four finish isnt a given, nor is Champions League success.
Villa Boy, East London,
why should £15 be OK and £19 not? Because Rafa and you say so? This is a business deal and what is wrong with Villa holding out for a better deal? Barry should have some EQ to know that his high valuation is an indication of how much Villa value his importance. Of is so in need of a hug from MON?
sgvilla, Singapore,
The Villa / Barry years have been mutually beneficial. It is really sad that they will end acrimoniously (and the valuation of Barry at £19M will only increase tensions)
A sum of £15 would be reasonable IMO for all parties. Unforunately, reason appears to be in short supply in this saga!
crawf, Dubai, UAE
Barry wants to go to Liverpool simply because they are a bigger club, will pay him more money and have a greater chance of success. Not sure what it is down at Villa park that people are not getting. It's the modern world and money talks.
AB, Dubai, UAE
Stephen, 'The Brains of the Operation', indeed, "run down his contract" that's a good idea. Top marks
Dave, Dubai, UAE
Gareth Barry, you have contradicted yourself many times, on one hand you tell MON and Randy that you want to leave but then on the other hand they didn't try enough. Why don't you hand in a transfer request? Is it because it'll affect the amount of money you recieve.
John, Coventry, Warwickshire
I have lost my respect for Barry after these uncalled for remarks about a club which have done so much for him. Perhaps he should ask Liverpool why they have not raised their bid for him? Does he really think Villa should bow to Liverpool just so he can live his dream?
sgvilla, Singapore,
Barry should just simply say if he isn't allowed to move he'll run down his contract. Any way at his age 28 isn't there some Fifa ruling that allows him to buy out his contract?
Stephen, St. Ives, England
