Alan Shearer has informed Blackburn Rovers that he may be persuaded to swap the comfort of the television studio for the stresses and strains of management by returning to Ewood Park to succeed Mark Hughes. The former England captain has told his former club that he would be interested in being interviewed for their vacancy and that he believes he has the quality and hunger to drive the club forward.
Shearer’s name was among the first in the frame when Hughes left for Manchester City last week, but there were doubts whether he would be willing to turn his back on his lucrative role as a studio analyst for the BBC. However, he is understood to have been approached by the club and to have indicated that he would be happy to compete for the position with Paul Ince, his former England teammate. Although Shearer has stopped short of declaring his interest outright, his willingness to discuss the post has been welcomed at Ewood Park.
Having spent the past few days weighing up the merits of several candidates, John Williams, the chairman, is due to meet his fellow directors to-day to discuss a shortlist that is likely to include Ince, the Milton Keynes Dons manager, Stuart Pearce, the England Under21 head coach, Sam Allardyce, the former Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle United manager, and Steve McClaren, the former England head coach. There are also a number of overseas candidates, such as Roberto Mancini, the former Inter Milan coach, Michael Laudrup, of Getafe, Dick Advocaat, of Zenit St Petersburg, and both Avram Grant and Henk ten Cate, who worked together at Chelsea last season.
There is considerable support at Blackburn for the appointment of Ince, who would become the first black British manager of a Premier League club, but the availability and interest of Shearer, who spent four successful years at Ewood Park as a player, would change the complexion of the club’s search.
Some have questioned how serious Shearer is about his stated ambition to become a manager, having turned down a coaching job with England under the McClaren regime while seemingly holding out for the job at Newcastle. But the 37-year-old has earned the necessary coaching qualifications and is believed to have told Mike Newell, his former Blackburn strike partner, who had a spell in charge of Luton Town, and Tommy Craig, the former Newcastle coach, that he will appoint them to his backroom staff if and when he becomes a manager.

It would be the best news ever if Alan Shearer comes to Blackburn. He would be a good manager just like he was our best striker. Even better if he brings Mike Newell, the old boys back together!!!
Sharon, Haslingden, UK
Alan Shearer would try and bring back a buzz around Ewood, the place would be alive, similar to what King Kev has done for Newcastle.
If he is appointed and Mike Newell joins as him no 2 I believe he will command the players respect straight away and hopefully we can keep hold of our talent.
Stephen Kitchen, RAMSBOTTOM, ENGLAND
If Shearer is appointed and given a decent amount to spend (10million would be considered a huge kitty from a board who run such a tight ship) I have no doubt that he could lure some quality players to Ewood on his reputation as a player alone. Add Mike Newell and we could be in business
Scott, Bristol, UK
A concept beyond you (connor) which is why you are a man u fan! Shearer knows his stuff, transfering that knowledge to a manager is a different story.
Jon, Portsmouth, UK
Alan Shearer would be a good choice for manager
Chris, Haslingden,
I hope he is appointed, just so we the "Alan Shearer as future Newcastle/England manager" myth can be put to the test. Personally I think he'll be rubbish; I've not seen any evidence of management ability in the man, but at least we'll see.
Nick, France,
Has Shearer ever exhibited any managerial ability? I don't think so. He seems to want to start off at the top.
Ince has proved that he can start off as a manager at the bottom and in adverse circumstances and succeed. It should be no contest.
David, Poole,
Why would Blackburn even want an untried manager after a number of years of continued progress under Mark Hughes?
What can Alan Shearer actually bring to Blackburn with no experience coaching or managing a team, let alone a decent Premier League side.
Steve McLaren should be offered it.
Paul, Blackburn,
Avram Grant to take us forward
popkoren, Perth, Australi
If it means we don't have to listen him and Hansen pontificate on MOTD every Saturday then bring it on. Any chance he could take Hansen and Lawro as assitants ?
neal, Reading ,
Give the job to the most promising British managerial talent.......Paul Ince.
Gyan, Witham, UK
Grant is the man for the job.
Dont gamble on some one with no coaching experience.
Gtant will take Blackburn to the next level.
roman, London, UK
That's all Shearer ever does...talk about it. Stick to your job at the Beeb Alan.
kirk, Rotherham, UK
Shearer will be a great appointment, the fans want him, the players will respect him, the clubs owners are fond of him after the incredible effect he had in his time as a player at the club. He would be given time to move the club forward, unlike some other candidates, like Allardyce or McClaren.
Adam Hosker, Blackburn, England
Connor, you obviously dont know much about the Shearer transfer. its been said that Jack Walker pretty much told him that he was never going to sell him to Utd, so his home town team (who were fairly good back then) was the obvious choice.
al, Blackburn,
I hope Shearer goes for it and is a great success...... or at least I hope he gets some good experience before he gets offered the Newcastle job.
Always fun to see a bitter Man U fan (Connor) has bothered to comment. Surely you've got over it/ better things to worry about!?
Graham, Sydney, Australia
Thanks but no thanks. He ditched us once, and he'd do it again to go and manage the most underachieving club in the world. Jog on Alan, we don't want you ta.
Rob, Exeter, UK
This is the man who walked out on England in 2000 because he couldn't take stick from fans. Mr. Personality By-Pass.
He is so bad at decision making, he turned down a move to ManU in the mid 90's to join Newcastle where he won absolutely nothing and ManU everything!
Connor , Thorpe, UK
As a legend that AS is at my club NUFC i will believe when i see it, but its a good choice until he takes over at NUFC and i hope he does well until they face NUFC of course.
Andrew
Andrew, Georgetown, Washington, DC, United States
does he have coaching credentials or is he the next southgate??
