Chelsea made a large number of high-profile acquisitions under Jose Mourinho during his spell as manager.
Hits
Didier Drogba: as has been the case over the years, Chelsea's spending power forced them to pay over the odds for Drogba from Marseille. But the Ivory Coast international overcame a difficult start to become the Premier League's leading striker.
Michael Essien: at £24 million from Lyons, the Ghana international was no bargain. But the rock-hard, energetic midfielder looks likely to be at Stamford Bridge for a few years yet and is a fans' favourite.
Florent Malouda: already looks a decent signing at £13.5 million from Lyons. The French winger has started the season strongly and will be a more consistent performer than predecessor Arjen Robben.
Misses
Paulo Ferreira: spells of injury and poor form have undermined Ferreira since he joined for in excess of £13 million after he and Mourinho lifted the Champions League trophy with Porto in 2004.
Mateja Kezman: Chelsea beat Birmingham City to Kezman's signature from PSV Eindhoven for £5 million but after a year in west London, they probably wished they had let City have him.
Shaun Wright-Phillips: the England winger has improved considerably this season and remains a good player. But Mourinho never got the best out of him after he joined from Manchester City for £21 million.
Andriy Shevchenko: very little about Shevchenko's transfer from AC Milan for £30 million seemed good business. The Ukrainian was too old, too expensive and too hampered by knee injuries over the years. Whether he was Mourinho's choice remains open to question.
Michael Ballack: Ballack arrived with Shevchenko in 2006 with Mourinho under pressure to win the Champions League. Injury and poor form have blighted his Chelsea career so far.
Khalid Boulahrouz: signed from Hamburg for £7 million to add defensive steel, it never worked out for 'Khalid the Cannibal' as his performances were not as solid as his build.
