After spending all season on the side-lines, Michael Ballack embarked on a charm offensive yesterday by stating that he hopes to end his career at Chelsea, though there are several ways of interpreting that particular aim. Some cynics will no doubt scoff that he has already achieved it.
Ballack has not played since suffering a broken ankle in a Barclays Premier League match against Newcastle United in April. The Germany captain has undergone two operations and several trips to a specialist with little progress and he has yet to resume training.
Such was Chelsea’s frustration at the injury that they omitted Ballack from their 23-man squad for the Champions League group stage, and there were suggestions that they hope to sell him during the January transfer window. Bernd Schuster, the Real Madrid coach, is interested in signing his compatriot, but Ballack insists that he wants to stay at Stamford Bridge. The 31-year-old even raised the prospect of signing a contract extension when his present deal expires in 2009. “I feel very happy here and would like to end my career at Chelsea,” Ballack said. “If I am still fit when my contract runs out, why should I not play on for another two years?” Didier Drogba also reaffirmed his commitment to Chelsea yesterday after complaining bitterly about the departure of José Mourinho. The Ivory Coast striker is willing to work with his successor, Avram Grant, despite interest from AC Milan and Real. “Chelsea is my destiny today,” Drogba said. “I do not want the adventure to change. Milan? What a good club. But I have spoken to nobody.”
Henk ten Cate will begin work as assistant first-team coach at Chelsea today after the club confirmed that they had agreed an £800,000 compensation package with Ajax. The Dutchman will work alongside Steve Clarke, who has resolved to stay at the club.
