So we learn that the present refereeing fad for punishing potentially dangerous tackles is not compatible with the crazed freneticism of a cup semi-final. The surprise was that only one player was sent off last night given the number of bad challenges.
Caught up in the febrile atmosphere of a relentlessly pacy contest, players operated on instinct and tackled without thinking. Dry directives giving warning that the possibility of causing harm to an opponent is now uppermost in referees’ thoughts, regardless of intent, were far from their minds, even though it can hardly be news given the number of players dismissed in the past month for tackles that would not have warranted even a booking a generation ago.
Avram Grant, the Chelsea first-team coach, recently balked at the idea that he would like to fashion a side emulating Arsenal. But his team increasingly resemble their London rivals during the era when Patrick Vieira stalked the midfield in search of prey. John Obi Mikel’s red card last night was the sixth shown to a Chelsea player this season.
Grant has inherited José Mourinho’s antagonism towards officialdom, yet surely he must accept that the club’s poor disciplinary record is not a conspiracy. Without the injured John Terry, at least Chelsea’s players did not harangue Peter Walton, the referee, with as much vehemence as at Old Trafford earlier in the season, when Mikel was also sent off.
Mikel has now been sent off four times in his season-and-a-half in West London. The Nigeria midfield player was having a superb game, his dynamic athleticism recalling Michael Essien, who has headed to the African Cup of Nations before him. In his final game before leaving for Ghana, Mikel doubtless wanted to make a big impact -John Ob he did, on Phil Neville’s leg.

Mikel's problem stems from his lack of pace and natural clumsiness. He is clearly an extremely talented footballer with great control and poise on the ball but he appears to possess an immature inability to judge the pace of the game. When in possession, he often holds the ball far too long inviting unnecessary challenges and with them, the resultant scuffles with opponents. It also goes without saying that he often mistimes his own challenges as his disciplinary record clearly shows. None of these faults are deliberate in my view and the Chelsea staff need to work on his timing as a priority. He will then clearly be an exciting talent

Whilst at primary school during the 40s, the teacher in charge of the football team, "drummed" into all who had ambitions to play, there was one reason, above all others, why the honour would be denied. Anyone who "went over the ball" in a tackle would be barred sine die. Are players to-day completely oblivious to the dangers of such a practice or is it coaching methods have completely changed ?

How many more over the top tackles by Mikel? This ishis 4th straight red, everyone for dangerous play, The FA should throw the book at him, give him at least a 6matchban.I know Chelsea fans will moan at this, but Mikel is going to end someones career. Every time he gets a red card Chelsea say it should havebeen a yellow, or everyone is against Chelsea. Mikel is verybad at tackling,John Terry or Carvalho should give him some tips on tackling.

Someone should tell David Moyes to put away the Father Christmas outfit 'til next year: Everton have recently gifted goals to Man Utd, Arsenal and now Chelsea in games they were at least the equal of the 'super trio.'
David Cockcroft, London, Middlesex
Of the six red cards, only Carvalho's stands out as the right decision to me, the rest were yellows. The ref tonight tried his best but was woefull, how did Nevill stay on, Carvelho not go and the kick out at Belletti go unpunished?
