Petr Cech, the Chelsea goalkeeper, has been ruled out of the Champions League quarter-final, second leg against Fenerbahce having undergone surgery on his lip and chin following a collision during a practice session yesterday.
The Czech Republic international was taken to hospital on Sunday afternoon after colliding with another player at the club's Cobham training ground and is expected to be out for two weeks.
A statement on the Chelsea website read: "Peter Cech underwent surgery yesterday following a training ground accident which left him with lacerations to his lip and chin. Petr will begin his rehabilitation immediately and we hope to have him back playing as soon as possible."
Avram Grant, the Chelsea manager, had hoped to have his first-choice goalkeeper available for the second leg as his team attempt to overturn a 2-1 deficit.
However, the club are certain to be cautious after Cech sustained a depressed fracture of the skull at Reading last season. The goalkeeper has worn a rugby-style skull cap for protection during games since he recovered from the accident at the Madejski Stadium.
Cech has been out of action since the beginning of March with an ankle injury suffered in training.
