Take a trip to New York and see the city from the air

John Terry has always been able to issue a rousing rallying cry and did not disappoint on the eve of Chelsea's Champions League semi-final against Liverpool. As Avram Grant, the first-team coach, repeatedly emphasised his desire to make history rather than be consigned to it, the Chelsea captain expressed his thoughts in a more straightforward manner, outlining his determination to lift the trophy sitting yards away from him in the Anfield Trophy Room.
Chelsea's players have deliberately avoiding discussing their previous disappointments in this competition, preferring to dwell on their hopes of finally winning the Champions League rather than the pain of three semi-final defeats in the space of four years, the last two at the hands of Liverpool. Although he made a joke of it, Terry actually asked to attend his first pre-match press conference in almost four years so that he could put across a positive message, showing strong leadership that has not always existed at the club this season.
“If it was down to me, I wouldn't be here, but we do mean business,” Terry said. “It's not so much about putting the record straight, it's about what we can go on and achieve. For the club, it's a massive chance to make history. Forget the past. This is an opportunity which we have to take. We don't look back, wondering whether it was a goal or not. There's no point in doing that.
“Don't get me wrong. That burning is still there when we've lost to Liverpool on the two previous occasions, and that will never go away, but one thing that would ease that would be us progressing and winning the trophy. I've just walked past it by the door here and it's something I want to get my hands on as Chelsea captain.”

The trophy Terry referred to is a replica; the real one is in the Anfield museum, given to Liverpool to commemorate their achievement in lifting the European Cup on five occasions. Chelsea have been clear favourites on the previous meetings, but, given Rafael Benítez's record in Europe, their improving league form and ongoing instability at Stamford Bridge that status is no longer as clear-cut, as Terry acknowledged.
“We've probably been favourites coming into these games in the past, but they're going well in the Champions League and the league also,” he said. “They've always had the backbone of Stevie [Gerrard] and Carra [Jamie Carragher], which is a massive presence for them, and the manager's bought well. They might not have the best team on paper, but on the pitch they're together.
“The atmosphere's obviously very good, which we're aware of. The crowd have made the difference in the last few occasions, but we can go back to the Bridge this time around. “They are very good in this competition, have a strong squad and a good manager, but that maybe provides another incentive. To beat them and go on and lift the trophy in Moscow.”
Many at Chelsea have set great store in the decisive second leg taking place on home territory, but Benítez dismissed the significance of such scheduling out of hand. “There's maybe a little edge for Chelsea in that, but I don't believe - and neither do the rest of the boys - that it will have any say on deciding who goes through,” he said. Stamford Bridge is a big stadium and it might give them more confidence, but it's got nothing like the aura about it that Anfield does and it certainly won't intimidate us.”
Grant seemed remarkably relaxed given what is at stake for him over the next nine days, although it is to be hoped that his team talk is less reliant on the word “history”. The Israeli's injury problems have at least eased, with Michael Ballack and Didier Drogba available and Frank Lampard showing great professionalism to focus on football despite his mother's illness.
“In these two months, we can make history,” Grant said. “I am not thinking about anything else. You always speak about history. We lost here two times, but that belongs to history. Now we can create history.”

Given Liverpool's failure to compete in any other competition, yet again, you'd hope that the neutrals would want Chelsea to win, but somehow I doubt it.
Let's hope next season Liverpool can at least stay in the title race longer then Christmas, and then another impressive CL run would actually be a more laudable.
Both Man U and Chelsea deserve a lot more credit for having got this far, given how they have not had the luxury of resting players for the last few months.
Tim, London,
I think they must have sold out of lemons in Chelsea today. I can sense something bitter in the readers comments. I was going to watch the Chelsea / Everton game the other night but I painted the spare bedroom in the afternoon and thought I'd watch paint dry instead. 5 European Cups soon to be 6!
Gareth, Hackney,
If the Liverpool squad really is so much better, why are Liverpool again in a battle for 4th place again at the tail end of the season. OK - they've just about sealed that, but moving from 5th to 4th ahead of Everton isn't exactly monumental progress.
Nick, France,
We Brits, wish Liverpool all the best. The team (certainly not the Board) represent everything that is great about English football: Tenacity, togetherness and a never say die attitude.
Oh, and Liverpool also have the odd player capable of producing moments of genius. Unlike Chelski.
Neil, London,
I recall Martin's article praising Steve MacLaren's managerial skills for choosing the rookie goalie just before England's disastrous defeat by Croatia, putting us out of the Euro Football finals. A red card pundit offence?!

There is no similarity to A.C. Milan. Liverpool are in the CL Semi final & Milan are not. Liverpool will be in the CL next season Milan will not (inter toto only). Liverpool have evolved since 2005 into a better squad Milan are going backwards!
Come on you Red Men!!
Mauro Ortelli, London, uk
Can't understand the comment that Liverpool are weaker than 2005. Belief took them all the way to Istanbul that year, and a stronger side plus belief can do the same this time too.
Gary, Liverpool,
I do not know who will win but I hope it is as exciting as the LIVERPOOL/ARSENAL matchup. Those were some entertaining games and I would be disappointed if we did not see something similar. For god sake it is the semis-final and you would hope the games would get better and interesting.
Naleen, Northern California,
This is the match up I wanted to see as twice already the Reds has knocked the Blues out at this very stage of competition. It will be three when all is said and done, Grant will be looking for a new job and Roman revamping the entire team in seach of that elusive UEFA CL title.
WHW, Toronto, Canada
In the Prem this season Chelsea were lucky to scrape draws in both games against Liverpool.
That I feel will have more bearing on tonights game than current league positions.
Phil, St helens,
european cup finals are usually dreay affairs, but the last thing the world needs is a repeat of last season's f.a. cup final. chelsea's football is horrible.
jem, london, uk
I am sure Liverpool is weaker and they are scared to death.
We Russians wish Chelsea the best!
Of course, they need a good fortune's smile this time they've never had.
We Russians wish Chelsea the best!
Good luck!
Alexander, Biysk, Russia
Yet again Liverpool are 4th and this year unusually they flopped in both cups too. And they so nearly got knocked out at the CL group stage, however come the latter stages of the CL then all of a sudden they almost schizophrenically see themselves as the greatest team around. Benitez said yesterday 20 times better than the squad that won in 1995 ....blah blah. I for one am bored of this. Come on you blues!
Davie P, London,
The reds are quite similar to A.C. Milan: a mediocre team with a great experience and tons of luck (which in a competition as UEFA C.L. is more needed than skills). But nobody can be lucky forever: let's go blues, let's make history!
Emanuele, Milano, Italy
History favour those hardy lads from Liverpool; sorry Terry I doubt your side is capable of changing history.
