Carlo Cudicini could be reunited with Claudio Ranieri, his former manager at Chelsea, after an approach from Juventus. Officials of the Serie A club flew into England yesterday to try to persuade the goalkeeper to return to Italy and Mathieu Flamini to leave Arsenal.
Juventus have concerns about the fitness of Gianluigi Buffon and want to sign an experienced reserve goalkeeper. They are close to qualifying for next season's Champions League in their first top-flight campaign after being relegated over a match-fixing scandal two years ago and Alessio Secco, the Juventus sporting director, hopes to make contact today after watching Liverpool against Chelsea in the Champions League semi-final, first leg last night.
Cudicini, 34, has a year left on his contract at Chelsea, whom he joined nine years ago. Only John Terry of the present squad has been at the club longer. The Italian has become the second choice at Stamford Bridge since the arrival of Petr Cech four years ago but has played 19 matches in all competitions this season because of injuries suffered by the Czech Republic goalkeeper.
Juventus would be prepared to offer Cudicini a medium-term contract if he is willing to take a drop in salary, which is £1.6million a year at present. Cudicini was signed as a back-up to Ed de Goey, first on loan, then for £160,000 from Castel Di Sangro. He has made nearly 130 league appearances since and Chelsea turned down an approach from Manchester City for him last summer.
Juventus also claim to be confident of signing Flamini. The 23-year-old midfield player, whose deal expires in the summer, has been given until the end of the month by Arsenal to decide whether he will sign a new contract worth more than £2.2million a year.
“We have the advantage over AC Milan, who also want him,” Jean Claude Blanc, a Juventus director, said. “They are not likely to be in the Champions League. We will be. As a child Flamini was a supporter of Juve. We are negotiating with an important player who we have been following for a long time, and we will do well to get him with a lot of clubs interested. You need to match top players' ambitions and think big.”
Tottenham Hotspur have narrowed their search for a goalkeeper and expressed an interest in Heurelho Gomes, who has been valued at £12million by PSV Eindhoven. Tottenham's first choice is Carlos Kameni, of Espanyol, but the deal has hit an unspecified sticking point.
Gomes was outstanding when PSV defeated Tottenham on penalties in a Uefa Cup round of 16 tie last month. Gomes has threatened to leave the club, who won their fourth successive title on Sunday, because of differences with the board and the appointments of coaches, despite signing a new contract until 2013 in December. “I am not really sure where I will be next season,” Gomes said. “I am aware of interest from other clubs only from what I have read. The good feeling has gone. With this organisation the situation in the future will deteriorate.”
The Brazil player started his career at Cruzeiro before moving to PSV four years ago. He has gained a solid reputation and in his first season went 971 minutes without conceding a goal. PSV have said that there has been no official contact from Tottenham for Gomes, who has also been linked with Milan.
Tottenham have watched Maarten Stekelenburg but have doubts about the Ajax goalkeeper. Also in their sights are Diego López, the Villarreal player, and Marco Amelia, the Livorno goalkeeper who was in the Italy squad that won the World Cup in 2006.
