Enter our Snapshots of Summer photography competition

Not the hand of God but an act of faith. And the camera caught the moment with all the resonance of a great Renaissance painting. It captures a moment of transfiguration. A sports photographer’s snapshot becomes a symbol of something far greater for thousands of fans. For many this image of thanksgiving will feel like the Stamford Bridge equivalent of that most moving Christian tableau, the deposition from the Cross.
Frank Lampard, his final mission accomplished, relinquishes himself to some divine power. He falls to his knees, eyes closed as if in prayer, in his left hand the black armband he was wearing as tribute to his dead mother. His physical strength has been surrendered to a spiritual fate.
It is a pair of teammates who have to support him. They are the believers who have benefited from their friend’s act of faith. They cradle him in their arms, forming the classic pyramidal composition of a 15th-century masterpiece. The lines created by their locked gazes, the zigzagging angles of their interlacing limbs, form dramatic patterns across the surface plane of the picture. This gives the image visual force. It will plant this photograph as securely in the imagination of the football lover as Michelangelo fixed his images of sacrifice in the minds of religious believers.

A super image and a wonderful piece of interpretation. The London begrudgers have clearly never taken a decisive penalty in their lives, and I bet their 'normal jobs' do not involve displaying your skills in front of 40000 people.
Tony, Oxford, UK
As society increasingly shuns traditional religion, but craves for spirituality I find the interpretation of this excellent sports photo quite apt. We are spiritual being in a secular world.
We need to accept our inner need for moments like this, appreciate them and reflect on them.
Kevin W, Newbury, UK
Dan: David is not on his own. He is absolutely right, as is usually the case with the minority. "Ordinary" people manage to survive the death of a parent without resorting to public posturing. Thereagain, Mr. Lampard is surely an ordinary person like the rest of us. He's just a footballer.
Chris, Mississauga, Canada
It was certainly not trivialised. It was one of the most powerful and moving photos I have ever seen.
Liz, Brighton,
A great take on a great photo.
Andy, Sheffield,
David. Yes you are on your own.I find your attitude shocking. If Frank wanted to play and score as a tribute to his mum then good on him. That was one of the most powerful moments I have ever seen in sport and was moved to tears. Who are you to tell the boy how to grieve. You should think again.
Dan, London, uk
Am I alone in finding this shocking? I'm sorry Lampard has lost his mother. We all sympathise; it is something we all suffer. But grief is private; we share it within the family. Here it was put on display. It was celebrated, trivialised, compounded by facile reference to true religious art.
David , London, UK
Fantastic Game, the best ever. A proud moment for the players, fans and the club. Frank Lampard is an exceptional player and human being i dont think i could have been as strong as him.
Lets hope we win it in Moscow!
Jess B, London, England
What a wonderful picture and R C-J 's beautifully written interpretation..thank you.
Where can I get a copy of the photo please?
Colin Francis, Shaftesbury, UK
Beautiful moment, fabulous picture/painting, brilliant analysis. I was at the match and above Frank Lampard in the stands was a banner 'Chelsea: our religion'.
Alan B, London, England
Rachel, what you see and express, I shed a tear for the first time. I felt the emotion last night, but was swept away with euphoria.
Maybe it was the word "transfiguration," or the phrase "resonance of Rennaissance."
Great words, with humility.
Brett Cox, London,
Stunning.
I have never been appreciative of art in its more traditional forms or in the case of photography in its appeal when featuring us humans. Landscapes, still life, the abstract , when caught on film can capture my imagination and stimulate my senses; until I saw the Lampard 'masterpiece'.
tim, Dronfield, Derbyshire
That is so beautifully written! Absolutely wonderful stuff by Rachel Campbell-Johnston
