Chelsea suffered a huge setback last night when Carlo Ancelotti rejected the opportunity to become their manager. The AC Milan coach had emerged as the personal choice of Roman Abramovich and the Chelsea owner had offered a contract worth £7 million a year after several meetings with the Italian, the most recent of which is understood to have taken place in Paris on Monday.
However, despite Chelsea’s belief that their offer would be enough to end his seven-year reign at the San Siro, Ancelotti last night insisted that he would be staying at Milan after a 90-minute meeting at the ground with Adriano Galliani, the club’s vice- president. “I’m staying at Milan for sure,” Ancelotti said. “I’m 150 per cent certain I will stay.”
Many at Chelsea are privately furious at Ancelotti, believing that he has led them on to gain an improved contract at Milan. Chelsea did not deny speaking to him, stating only that they have not reached agreement with any manager or approached any club to speak to one of their employees. The club believe that there is no obligation under Fifa rules to ask permission before speaking to the manager of a foreign club, as there is in the Barclays Premier League.
“Contrary to reports, Chelsea Football Club has not reached agreement with any individual to become manager, nor have we sought permission from any organisation to talk to their manager,” a club statement read.
“We’re extremely happy with how our search is progressing.”
In many respects, Ancelotti represented an odd choice because he does not fulfil many of the criteria set out by Chelsea last weekend. The former Milan midfield player speaks little English, is a conciliatory figure and, despite an enviable track record, including two Champions League triumphs and one Serie A title with the Rossoneri, has attracted considerable criticism for favouring a defensive style of football.
However, in his favour was his relationship with Abramovich, whom he has known since the Russian billionaire bought Chelsea five years ago. Ancelotti, 48, is a quietly spoken diplomat used to working with powerful owners, while others at Chelsea had hoped that he could help to fulfil Abramovich’s fantasy of bringing Kaká to Stamford Bridge.
Having dismissed Avram Grant on May 24 in the wake of Chelsea’s Champions League final defeat, Abramovich first held talks with Ancelotti in Geneva nine days ago, when he asked for his views on younger candidates such as Roberto Mancini and Frank Rijkaard. Soon, though, the Chelsea owner was ready to make Ancelotti the highest-paid coach in the world, topping the £6 million salary of Fabio Capello, the England manager.
Chelsea must now return to the drawing board. Luiz Felipe Scolari, the Portugal coach, is still in contention and they have not ruled out a late move for Mark Hughes, the Blackburn Rovers manager, who was holding talks with Manchester City officials in London last night. Luciano Spalletti, of AS Roma, is also being considered.

A manager with integrity. Interesting.
JohnOh, Bolton,
I do not understand the thought processes of Tsar Roman. Jose Mourinho was, and remains, probably the best football coach in the world. He took an under performing club to, frankly, the best in Europe for a period of 3 years plus. Sacking him was business suicide. For United fans it's great!
John Pownall, Bridport,
James; how can any fan be jealous of a team with no style, class or integrity? When Roman walks away, which he will, I'll be watching on with great happiness as this misguided smugness Chelsea fans have is brutally smashed to pieces.
£74mil loss per year, yep I'm jealous!!!
Dean, Manchester,
Why don`t Chelsea go the whole hog and appoint John Terry as Player-manager. After All did`nt he want a 9 year contact and then the option to manage.
Chelsea are the laughing stock of Europe,
Ian Macleay, Sutton , England
The most creative and skilled fooballer Chelsea ever had, loads of flair and commitment, now Manager of the Italian under 21s. You want attacking, adventurous football, Roman? Then stick your neck out and grab our beloved Franco Zola. He trained like a fanatic and he will be no soft touch.
Panos Aristides, Chelmsford, England
Good for Ancelotti. Just nice to know that there are some managers out there with integrity and not all chase the big bucks. Ultimately The Special One was deemed surplus to requirements and now Grant despite finishing second in the League and runner up in the Champions League in his first season.
Gen, London, UK
Nice to see some integrity from Ancelotti. Chelsea will not appeal to some top managers after the way they sacked Mourino, Grant and Ten Cate. Milan are a more decorated and historic club anyway, Chelsea are a middle club who happen to have a lot of cash, some things money cannot buy.
Matt, London,
At this rate Chelski will end up with Big Ron Atkinson
Dave, Cardiff,
Bravo Ancelotti, he threw his 50 pieces of silver back into the face of the Pharisee.
Tom Leeburn, London, Great Britain
Chelsea will find it very difficult to get any competent manager given the casual way they go about sacking people.
John, LONDON, ENGLAND
i don't know much about ancelotti besides his impressive CV, but I now repsect him for more than just being a winner. It is always reassuring to see that you don't have to be some arrogant loud-mouth, a borderline sociopath/alcoholic or an obesessed narcissist to be the very best.
respect, carlo.
Cameron, Dubai,
Thrilled as I am that we have Roman ruling the club, making the rest of you fans sooooo jealous (haha), it looks as though he knows little about football. The only real choice for the new manager is about to join Manchester City. Good luck to them and to Hughsie.
James, TWICKENHAM, UK
Good man. Excellent way to tell them off - "money can't buy me, luv!"
S K LIN, Sydney, Australia
A princpled and gentleman, not tempted by money.Remembered he lost a champs lge final on penalties in 2005, before returning to winning it in 2007. At Chelsea he would have been sacked 48 hours after the 2005 final, where result is needed yesterday, and today he wouldnt have had the offer.
