Chelsea turned down an £8 million offer for Frank Lampard from Inter Milan last night, but relations between the England midfield player and his club remained strained after a turbulent 24 hours. Luiz Felipe Scolari found himself at the centre of the row in his first media conference in England, with Lampard denying his new manager’s claims that he had committed his long-term future to Stamford Bridge.
Scolari has been at work in England for only a few days, but he finds himself at the heart of a dispute that has lasted for more than a year. Lampard has been insistent, at least publicly, that he wants to stay at Chelsea and yet he has stunned the club by not only refusing a deal worth about £130,000 a week, but also by repeatedly demanding a five-year contract.
Chelsea will offer only four years to a player who turned 30 last month and believe that term is the most Lampard will receive from Inter, who officially lodged their initial bid yesterday. Lampard’s problem is that he had wanted to keep his options open — including winding down the final year of his existing deal — without Chelsea fans thinking he was disloyal or greedy. But Scolari, wittingly or not, appeared to have flushed out the player’s intentions yesterday when he said that Lampard would definitely be staying — something the player and his agent disputed.
“I asked him if he wants to stay in Chelsea,” the former Portugal coach said. “Not only this season, but more time. And he said to me, after 15 minutes, that he wants to stay and he wants to play for Chelsea for many years. I was in that time very happy because I think Chelsea needs Lampard and Lampard likes Chelsea. Now it’s minimum questions to solve it and Lampard will be with us for more than one year.”
Lampard, who watched the press conference at the training ground in Cobham, Surrey, between double sessions, confronted Peter Kenyon in the canteen when the chief executive returned from the nearby Hilton Hotel, where Scolari had been speaking. Lampard’s agent, Steve Kutner, revealed that the relationship appeared broken beyond repair, although, after talks later in the day, it became clear that Lampard’s issue remained with the club and the contract offer rather than Scolari.
“Frank has spoken to Scolari by phone and then in person,” Kutner said. “He made it categorically clear that although he would love to finish his career at Chelsea, with the deal he has been offered that is not possible.
“Maybe there has been a misinterpretation, but people at the club know it and I don’t know why they didn’t explain that to Scolari. They have put Frank in an untenable position. He said that he dreamt of finishing his career at Chelsea but they haven’t offered him the contract that allows him to do that.”
It is possible that Chelsea could withdraw the contract offer, one that would make Lampard the best-paid Englishman in football, and force the issue if he continues with his delaying tactics. Chelsea have doubted Lampard’s intentions for some time, particularly since José Mourinho, their former manager, took over at Inter. The move now appears a matter of financial negotiation.
If Lampard does leave, he will not be the last out of the door. Scolari has told the club that he wants a a maximum first-team squad of 25 and the arrivals of Deco, José Bosingwa and Branislav Ivanovic take the number to 33. With Scolari insisting that Didier Drogba will stay, a number of players have reason to fear for their futures, including Shaun Wright-Phillips, Tal Ben-Haim and Juliano Belletti. Steve Sidwell will join Aston Villa soon and their departures will force Chelsea to write off millions of pounds.
Asked if he was worried about interference from Roman Abramovich, the owner, Scolari said that he was in charge of all team matters. He dismissed a move for Ronaldinho, the Barcelona forward.

No one, but no one "deserves" to be paid 130,000 pounds a week. He is a talented athlete, but all the footballers are paid as long as there are employers willing to pay. "Deserve", eh? as if a pretty woman says "i deserve to marry billionair"
tomo, edinburgh, lothian
Seems to me that Lampard wants to go and is looking for Chelsea to provide an excuse . If he has been offered 130K weekly for four years then he should accept if he truly loves the club , to expect 5 years at his age is unrealistic and Chelsea would be wasting their money.

As a Chelsea fan i have loved what frank has done for this club in the recent past. However at 30 he needs to realise he is coming to the 'sun set' of his careerer. If he is serious about finishing at Chelsea sign the deal and then look for an extension based on quality performances. Otherwise go!
Henry Shaw, London, London
Chelsea fans are saying that if Lampard goes then they have Ballack, but Ballack only has one year left on his contract. Looks like he is aiming to leave Chelsea at the end of next season on another free transfer.
Lorraine, Oxford,
If Lampard really wants to stay a the club which has shown him so much support when he needed it the most, then he needs to stop this speculation as soon as possible and accept the -not too shabby - deal that is on the table. If not, then the club need to cut their losses as soon as possible.
Andy, Abergavenny, Wales
There is nothing worse than greedy overpaid footballers wanting more. Chelsea should let him go now and move on.
John Barnes, Bexhill, England
the players around him make it easy for him to appear ok.
chelsea and england would be better off without him, he is too greedy, loses possession too often, and plays purely for frank lampard. no wonder gerrard cant play with him.
malcolm pugh, birmingham, england
I like Lamps and admired the way he scored the penalty in the CL semi-final. However, he has been grossly mis-informed if he believes he is of a calibre worth more than £130,000 a week. I am all for player-power - i hate the likes of Kenyon running our clubs - but surely this is just pure greed?
Tom, London,
£130,000 a week for 4 years! I'd say Lampard's pushing his luck... Let him go Chelsea - his hand-kissing goal celebration really irks me anyway!
cww, Ipswich,
MIke.
8 million would be too little if.
1. He wasn't in the last year of his contract. He can buy it out for the wages he would earn, inter could then recompense this (Less than 8 mill)
2. He wasn't the wrong side of 30
3. If Chelsea actually needed him.
Good player but not great. Suggest sell.
Chris Ward, Coventry, United Kingdom
They make me laugh Barry is a far better player than Lampard or Becks but he does not play in London this is why he as played very little for England because the media picks England There are three Villa players who should have been England regulars and Becks should not have got eighty caps o
Bernard Baker, Burton-on-Trent, England
Am iI missing something or is 8 million pounds a palty sum for a provem midfielder who produces 20 plus goals a season . Villa are asking 15 million for Barry who i rate but below Lampard. Im suprised uncle Harry the wheeler dealer he is hasn't put in a bid . Cheap at 10 my son.
mike, chelmsford,
Lamps might appear to be the heart of chelsea as people might say, all clubs have them, but you cant honestly say you love something then make some outrageous demand on it. The handwriting of JM is clearly on the wall and I am sure Inter wont offer him any more than 2yrs contract.
Chidi Osigwe, Lagos, Nigeria
Am I the only person who noticed that Deco, older than FL, ran out of steam at half time at Euro 08? Or that Ballack, geat player but even older, is now injury prone. And both are unproven in the PL whilst FL will keep posession and score 20 goals a season. As an Arsenal fan it's looking good to me.
Rob, Sudbury, Suffolk, England
Deco was the heartbeat of the Portugal side, Ballack drageed a woeful Germany side to the final of the Euro's and Essien is younger and hungrier than Lampard.
Much as I admire Lampard, he isn't the only player in the team
Will, Huntingdon,
Lampard we love you thats why donts leave chelsea remember me
Fraz javed , Mughalpura, Pakistan
As a true blue, I would feel bad if Lamps leaves for Inter. But I am sure Chelsea are too big a club than any individual. If its in his and Chelsea's interest, he should be let go. That would be good for both parties.

I am chelsea fan and admire Lampard, However, I think Lampard should go, there are fa much better players in Chelsea than him, epecially in the midfield. After all, he is 30.
Alfred, Nairobi,
i dont see why chelsea are fighting to keep lampard. its one thing to want to end your career at the club you love...its another to want to end it earning 130,000+ per week when most probably you wont be anywhere near the level deserving of such a salary.
ronald , london, england
Although Frank has done so much great stuff for Chelsea, his request for a 5 year contract on 130,000+ a week is too much. It does not make good sense for Chelsea to commit to this contract. He must go then. Deco and Ballack will fill the space nicely I'm sure.
AT, Sydney,
all the true blues want lampard to stay in chelsea..because lampard is the heart of chelsea!
maureen, jakarta, indonesia
I cannot believe how naive the english have become. can someone please explian to me like I was 5 years old why is all this fuss about Lampard? I am sure every english team has at least 3 Lampards in it. Let this joker go.
rae, munchen, germany
With Ballack still there and Deco soon around, I do not see many reasons why the club should open the wallet inappropriately wide. Lampard does not have the importance for Chelsea's performance any of those two may have. The money could well be spent on a good forward instead. Or youth work!
Thomas, Beijing, China
Agree that he's over-rated but how can you compare a midfielder with a striker???
StevieGee, Australia,
Lampard is grossly over-rated. This is a guy who failed to score in the World Cup finals despite his much renowned shooting skills. Crouch, by contrast, scored two. What does the not so special one, the one who spend lots of Russian money, see in him anyway?
