REAL MADRID forward Robinho has called a press conference for 11am today in an effort to pressurise his club to sanction his move to Chelsea before the transfer window slams shut at midnight tomorrow.
The 24-year-old Brazil star will state his case after being left out of Real’s squad for today’s Primera Liga opener at Deportivo Coruna. Real coach Bernd Schuster said Robinho would not be focused on representing the Spanish champions until the wrangling over his future was resolved. Chelsea have made an offer for Robinho, believed to be £25m, and been involved in negotiations with Real over the past few days, but the nine-times European champions want £29m and are also reluctant to sell after failing to land a suitable replacement.
Robinho is urging Real to recognise his desire to work under his compatriot Luiz Felipe Scolari at Stamford Bridge. “The negotiations are still going on,” Robinho told Brazil’s Globo television channel. “I hope it is all cleared up as soon as possible.”
Madrid president Ramon Cal-deron had insisted Robinho should accept he would be staying and Schuster believes he can reincorporate the player into the squad in spite of his desire to quit.
Robinho is not the only player whose future is in doubt. Zenit St Petersburg, the holders of the Uefa Cup and European Super Cup, have accused Tottenham Hotspur of bungling the possible transfer of Russian forward Andrei Arshavin as Spurs sought to cover the losses of Robbie Keane and the possible departure of Dimitar Berbatov.
“They didn’t do their homework very well and they have missed out on a very special player,” said Cor-nelius Pot, the Zenit assistant coach, who admitted Arshavin had pressed for the move to London.
Zenit had been ready to sell Russia’s leading footballer for £20m, Pot added, but lost patience after Spurs seemed to delay, as the on-off negotiations with Manchester United over the price of Berbatov became more protracted.
“They tried to wait until the last minute but we weren’t waiting for them,” said Pot. “We asked €25m (£20m) and no more than that. I have seen figures of £30m or £35m quoted but that was never true. Spurs offered €16m and another €2m for the agent, which was crazy. So we dismissed that.”
Asked if there was a chance that, with Berbatov edging closer to Old Trafford and two days left of the transfer window, the deal could be resurrected, Pot replied: “Zenit wanted €25m but if Tottenham were to offer that money today, we wouldn’t sell now. He stays with us and we are happy about that .”
Pot justified the price set for Arshavin, 27, as standard for one of Europe’s outstanding attacking players, suggesting that Spurs had underestimated the financial robustness at the top level of Russian football.
“The kind of money we wanted for Arshavin is normal in England or in Spain. Don’t forget we were winning the Uefa Cup with Arshavin, then he had a good European Championships with Russia. I don’t know whether Arshavin is happy to stay because he wanted to go to Tottenham. Perhaps he wasn’t pleased initially, but he has played well.”
While Spurs were reaching agreement with Spartak Moscow over the signing of £14m Russia forward Roman Pavlyuchenko yesterday, the London club’s director of football, Damien Comolli, acknowledged the club had found the transfer market frustrating.
“At the beginning of the summer, everybody was expecting a set of top centre forwards to move, and they haven’t,” said Comolli.
Samuel Eto’o, made available by Barcelona but still at the Nou Camp, had been a target, while Dav-id Villa, admired by Spurs coach Juande Ramos, has remained at Valencia. In the past nine months Tottenham have sold England’s Jermain Defoe to Portsmouth and Ireland’s Keane to Liverpool.
