The FA Cup Final lap of honour had descended into the usual chaos. After the presentation in the royal box and then posing for the official team picture with the trophy, the winning side always run to their fans to show off the famous old trophy. I was among a mass of photographers in front of the Chelsea supporters taking pictures of the team when I noticed Michael Essien doing the same on a camera that looked familiar.

I realised it was the camera I use to take pictures from behind the goal with remote transmission. My first thought was horror. “S***. God, please don’t drop it.” But that lasted only a moment.

As I saw him taking lots of pictures of his team-mates, my thoughts soon changed to “S***. God, I hope the camera is firing OK!”

At half-time I checked the remote camera to discover another photographer using the same channel as me and he had fired so many pictures that my camera card was full. I changed channel for the second half but I was in a huge panic as Essien carefully placed my camera back down on the Wembley turf wondering if there was enough space on the digital card to shoot any pictures at all.

As soon as the team started to head back to the dressing room, I ran on to the pitch to retrieve my camera and check what was on it. The relief and delight was massive as I flicked through the images to see Michael had taken some lovely shots of his team-mates.

As I edited the pictures in the wire room, Marc Aspland, the chief sports photographer, and I were giggling, saying we couldn’t wait for TheGame, with the words “pictures by Marc Aspland, Bradley Ormesher and Michael Essien”.

I like Michael’s pictures because you can see the players are relaxed in front of him and are posing as you would if one of your mates was taking a picture of you. I particularly like the team picture where Guus Hiddink and Frank Lampard are pointing at him, Their faces look like they are thinking: “What the hell are you doing ?”

Technically his composition is good and the idea of photographing the photographers photographing him was very funny. The only negative (pardon the pun) was the focusing, but when he learns how to do this we all may be in trouble.
