Everton have applied to enter the Intertoto Cup as a safeguard to secure European football next season.
The Merseyside club are currently fourth in the Premier League, which would be good enough to earn them qualification for the preliminary rounds of next season's Champions League.
Three further teams qualify for the Uefa Cup, with the next highest-ranked side eligible to enter the pre-season Intertoto Cup, which offers an alternative route into the Uefa Cup. Everton are still in this season's Uefa Cup, and will face Italian side Fiorentina in the last 16.
Aston Villa, Blackburn and Manchester City have also applied for entry to the competition.
"Clearly European qualification through our league position or via the Uefa Cup is our main priority," Keith Wyness, Everton's chief executive, said. "However because of the deadline for Intertoto Cup applications, it would be remiss of us not to put our name forward."

There are only two UEFA cup places up for grabs now as Tottenham Hotspur have already taken one of them due to winning the Carling Cup at the weekend, should anyone other than Manchester United or Chelsea win the F.A. Cup then they will take a place leaving only one for the team that finishes 5th in the league. It makes sense for the teams mentioned to apply for the Intertoto Cup including Everton and maybe even Liverpool who could find themselves with the disaster of not being in Europe at all next season with the fixtures they have remaining.
