Mikel Arteta has warned his Everton team-mates that their victory over Liverpool in the FA Cup fourth-round replay will count for nothing unless they build on it in the coming weeks, but, according to Bill Kenwright, the chairman, David Moyes’s players are well on their way to writing their names into Goodison Park folklore.
“I was brought up on the team of Nobby Fielding, Dave Hickson and Jimmy Harris,” Kenwright said. “Then we went to Roy Vernon and Bobby Collins. After that there was the great threesome of Colin Harvey, Howard Kendall and Alan Ball and we went on to ‘Super Latch’ [Bob Latchford] and those boys. But this team . . . are capable of getting up there with the greats. They just never give up.”
Moyes would testify to the spirit of his team. Already without Yakubu Ayegbeni, Louis Saha and James Vaughan because of injury and Victor Anichebe as a disciplinary measure, Marouane Fellaini and Steven Pienaar then limped off in the second half, but Everton prevailed with a goal from Dan Gosling, the substitute, with two minutes remaining of the match.
“It’s important to beat Aston Villa in the next round,” Arteta, the midfield player, said. “If not, beating Liverpool will have been for nothing.”
