David Moyes admits that the 5-0 defeat to Benfica in the Europa League last month hurt his Everton side but they are determined to restore their reputation in Europe tomorrow night.
The heavy defeat at The Stadium of Light was embarrassing for the Merseyside club, but their Scottish manager still has his sights set on qualification from group I starting with a good performance in the return fixture against the Portuguese side.
"We want to progress in the group, that is the important thing," he said. "We are going to have a go and get a result. A point would not be a bad thing the way the group is going.
"The key is to qualify, that’s our aim and we could find ourselves closer to that target tomorrow. But we have to play much better than we did in Lisbon.
"We do not use the word revenge, but pride is at stake. We are hurting from the Benfica game and the result. Hopefully we can do something about it."
Everton and Benfica are both on six points in the group with BATE Borisov and AEK Athens on three, so another defeat to the Portuguese side, coupled with results elsewhere going against them, could put the Barclays Premier League club's qualification in doubt.
Mikel Arteta, the Everton midfield player, has suffered a setback in his return from a cruciate knee ligament injury which has kept him out of action since February. "Mikel has needed to have a 'wash-out' on his knee after doctors found an infection," Moyes said. "It is a setback for him. However, at the moment we can't say how long it has put him back."
