Lawrie Sanchez has left Fulham with "immediate effect" according to a statement on the club's website. Ray Lewington and Billy McKinlay have been placed in temporary charge of team affairs whilst a search for a replacement manager takes place.
The statement read: "Following a run of disappointing results the club is languishing in the relegation zone of the Premier League table, and losing its Premiership status is a proposition that simply can not be contemplated at this stage in the club’s on-going development.
"The club is confident that it will find the right replacement to increase its chances of remaining in the Premiership, which is of vital importance.
"The club would like to thank Lawrie for helping the club through a difficult period at the end of last season, and thank him for his service over the last eight months."
Sanchez was appointed on a caretaker basis after the departure of Chris Coleman last season and given the job full-time in May, after relinquishing his role as Northern Ireland manager.
Fulham have only won two league games this season and a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday left them in the relegation zone with just 13 points from 17 games.
Sanchez's departure comes a day after John Collins' sudden resignation as Hibernian manager and the odds on the former Fulham midfielder getting the Craven Cottage job have dropped to 1-4.

It amuses me how often managers are sacked. What of the players? The funding? Its not solely the managers fault. Give me Man U's players the last two decades, I could win you 20 trophies.

Why always the managers? Its not only their fault. Give me Man U's players for the last two decades, and I'll win you 20 trophies. Its a matter of players, funds, staff too..

Pipe down Jimmy.
Sanchez is awful. Fulham played good football under Coleman now they're terrible to watch.
He'll be lucky to get a job in the championship now.
Michael , London,
Nigel Worthington hasn't signed a new contract yet with Northern Ireland. Perhaps we should bring back 'The Messiah' ie Lawrie to manage us again.
Some of Nigel's selections were a bit strange to say the least.
William, Larne, Co Antrim
He must wish that he'd stayed on as Northern Ireland manager. Helps Fulham maintain their premiership status, accepts the job full-time, brings in some new players and it all turns pear-shaped. Life can be cruel.
Where next for El Sanchez? It's going to mean dropping down a division, at least. Most of the lower EPL clubs have just switched managers, and i doubt Roy Keane's job is in jeopardy. There's always the Scotland job. (If the SFA don't mind going for another "foreigner", after the Vogts disaster.)
Peter Koeb, Geneva, Switzerland
I always knew that Lawrie Sanchez had good taste. Too good for the likes of crappy Fulham !
