Fulham have suffered a setback in their search for a new manager after Martin Jol withdrew from contention for the vacant post. The former Tottenham Hotspur manager was approached last Friday about his interest in becoming the permanent replacement for Lawrie Sanchez, who was dismissed last week, before the transfer window opens next week.
Jol was initially attracted because of the club’s proximity to his home in Essex, but it is believed that he felt that the squad may not be strong enough to avoid relegation from the Barclays Premier League this season. They are one place above the relegation zone, with only two league wins. Some Fulham officials also had reservations about the Dutchman.
Jol is holding out for an opportunity to take charge of one of the big clubs below the recognised top four, such as Newcastle United, where speculation persists about Sam Allardyce.
Ray Lewington will continue in charge of Fulham away to Tottenham today and it is difficult to conceive which manager will want to take on the job. Fulham have said that no approach has been made for John Collins, their former player who resigned as Hibernian manager last week. Graeme Souness and Terry Venables have been mentioned.
Mohamed Al Fayed, the Fulham chairman, is likely to have to offer the new manager a contract with a substantial bonus paid if the team stay in the top flight.
Tottenham’s hopes of capitalising on Fulham’s unsettled situation at White Hart Lane today have been boosted by the news that Ledley King will have a fitness test to decide whether he is ready to return. The centre back has not played since the final game of last season after a knee operation, before a thigh strain suffered in training last week prevented his participation in Saturday’s match away to Arsenal.

Dan Mac - you're "not taking the mick" but Fulham are a pointless club... I notice you don't mention what purposeful club you support. Sanchez as the best thing that ever happened to Fulham - you're either deluded or having a laugh... and also obviously haven't heard of Jean Tigana, Kevin Keegan or even Mickey Adams.
Arthur Green, London,
Fulham?!?! They are a pointless club... Sanchez (in the long run) would have been the best thing that ever happened to that club! Al Fayed makes me laugh with his delusions! If a manager keeps Fulham in the premiership they have over achieved! The same at Middlesborough, which is why Gibbs is such a good chairman! He know's they aren't a big club, he knows that by sacking a manager and replacing him with a new one won't improve a thing! Al Fayed needs to understand, Fulham will always be a small club, I'm not having a dig or taking the mick, that's just the way it is, the sooner he resigns himself to being happy with premiership football, the nmore he'll enjoy running the club.
Dan Mac, Borehamwood,
I just hope for a solution as soon as possible.. The Spurs match was another embarresment, and urgent reinforcements are required in January.
Sanchez wasted 26 mil on mediocre players from the Championship.. I saw the writing on the wall, when he bought Kamara for 6 mil!! Did he really expect him to perform in the Premier League! About 96 % of Fulham fans including me didn´t... I hope Fulham show some ambition in the forthcoming transfer window! COYW

I don't see too many openings at any of the "recognised big clubs below the top four". And i don't see why Martin Jol would be a better option than Sam Allardyce, who needs time to get things in place.
That said, it's quite understandable that he would want to avoid Fulham. They will be faced with the proverbial relegation dog-fight, from which they are far from certain to escape. Jol may be better off going to a Championship club which is ready to improve. Warnock has started to turn Crystal Palace around, for example. A similar managerial brief may help him to rebuild his reputation

It showed very early in Lawrie Sanchez's reign that he was not going to create great results; his signings, his results and his tactics looked very poor early on.
