Fulham are still waiting to find out whether they can sign Daniel Cousin after Fifa again delayed making a decision about sanctioning the forward’s controversial transfer from Rangers to Craven Cottage.
Roy Hodgson, the Fulham manager, thought that he had signed the Gabon forward for £3 million during the transfer window last month, but Fifa refused to sanction the deal after it discovered that the 31-year-old had played for two clubs – Lens and Rangers – this season. The governing body’s transfer rules prevent a player from representing three clubs in a season, but Fulham are hopeful of receiving special dispensation to sign the player before the end of the week.
Cousin travelled to Athens with Rangers yesterday for the club’s Uefa Cup round-of-32 match against Panathinaikos tomorrow night. The forward made an appearance as substitute when Rangers drew 0-0 with their Greek opponents in the first leg at Ibrox last week. “We thought we would get a decision this week, but Fifa have asked for more time to consider all the details,” Walter Smith, the Rangers manager, said. Cousin, who cost Rangers £750,000 from Lens in August 2007, has scored eight times for the Scottish club in 17 appearances.
