Attend an evening with Andre Agassi
After his international debut, Haynes had to wait a year for his next England appearance again against the Northern Irish. But between then and the 1962 World Cup quarter-final with Brazil in Vigna del Mar, Chile, by which time he was captain, Haynes missed only eight of England’s 63 games. In half of them, he was picked despite being a second division player.
He was essentially a functional player, an expert passer of the ball, either with the cross-field pass or with the through-ball. During the 1962 World Cup, when again we did not really see him at his best and when he was sometimes a resentful captain, there were criticisms of him for making England too predictable a team.
The watershed in his distinguished career came deep in the night in Blackpool in 1962. Fulham were due to play there the next day but Haynes smashed up his knee in a motor accident. Operations ensued, a long rest was necessary, and though he fought his way back to play successfully enough for Fulham, he never played for England again.
Never wanting to become a club manager, he subsequently lived for some years in Edinburgh, first operating as a bookmaker, then in other various professions. Always a powerful and dominating figure, his influence may have inhibited some players, especially at club level, but it was an inspiration to so many others and all too often he was reduced to raising the game of his team-mates. He went on playing for Fulham until the age of 36, when they gave him a free transfer.
