Roy Hodgson said yesterday that he had turned down approaches to coach Sweden and Norway.
“The situation is very simple, I’m contracted here at Fulham and very happy here,” the Fulham manager said. “I’m not available but it’s nice to be thought of by countries like Sweden and Norway, two countries for which I have great affection and great affiliation. My contract runs on here and I intend to fulfil my obligations.”
Hodgson knows Scandinavian football intimately. He began his management career with Halmstad and spent five years in charge of Malmö and two years at Orebro, all in Sweden. He has also coached Copenhagen and Viking, the Norwegian side, as well as Finland.
“On both occasions I have been contacted by people at the associations to inquire about my availability and on each occasion I’ve had to tell them that, flattered as I am by their interest, I’m not available to take the job,” the 62-year-old said.
Sven-Göran Eriksson, the Notts County director of football, also spurned interest from Sweden this week.
“It’s very nice to be mentioned,” Hodgson said. “I’ve made clear to the people that contacted me that I have a contract here at Fulham and I intend to honour that contract.”
However, his deal with the Barclays Premier League club runs only until next summer and discussions have not begun about an extension, although Hodgson seems relaxed. “I’m quite happy with the contract I’ve got, it runs until next year and we’ll see what happens,” he said.
Danny Murphy may be sidelined for three weeks after suffering a knee injury in Monday’s win over Hull City, while Andrew Johnson, Dickson Etuhu and Simon Davies are also out, limiting the potential for squad rotation against Roma in the Europa League group E match at Craven Cottage tonight.
Hodgson picked weakened sides in Fulham’s two previous group games, a draw with CSKA Sofia and a win over Basle.
“The injury list has made it a bit more difficult,” Hodgson said. “In the initial two matches, I had a very big squad to choose from and could make more changes and rest more players. This time we can’t do that.”
