Rick Parry, the Liverpool chief executive, has dismissed accusations from Steve Gibson, the Middlesbrough chairman, that the Merseyside club are failing in a duty to the England team by recruiting coaches and young players from overseas.
Gibson identified Arsenal and Liverpool as clubs whose approach to youth development was hampering the England team and Steve McClaren, the former Middlesbrough manager. The accusations were based on the decision by Rafael Benítez, the Liverpool manager, to follow the Arsenal model in importing youngsters from overseas because of a perceived lack of home-grown talent.
Since the summer of 2005, BenÍtez has signed teenagers from Argentina, Austria, Ghana, the Netherlands, Morocco, Paraguay and Spain, the vast majority of whom have yet to appear at first-team level.
Parry dismisses claims that Liverpool are ignoring local youngsters — one of last season’s FA Youth Cup team, Danny Guthrie, appeared as a substitute at Newcastle on Saturday — but he feels that Benítez is right in putting the interests of the club before those of the country.
“From our perspective, our target is winning trophies,” Parry told BBC Radio 5 Live’s Sportsweek programme. “Our supporters care about Liverpool first and England second and our job and focus is to bring glory to Liverpool. But at the same time we have invested as much, if not more, than just about any other club on our academy. We will still continue to do our thing to develop young English players, we are very committed to that but the balance for us has to be winning things first.”
Parry said that on his trip to Texas this week to meet the club’s new owners, George Gillett and Tom Hicks, he will inspect the American Airlines Center — home of Hicks’s Dallas Stars ice hockey team — to see whether elements of that stadium, including underground executive boxes known as “bunker seats”, could be incorporated into Liverpool’s new stadium in Stanley Park, work on which is due to start next month.

Parry is totally right! Liverpool pay his wages not England. He is paid to put LFC on a sound financial footing and look after the interest of LFC. I am Liverpool born and bred and I demand Liverpool FC put our club before our country. I am sick and tired of seeing good players injured for England like Redknapp and Owen, the latter will probably never be the same player just like Redknapp never was after an England injury. England need to get there house in order by appointing quality managers instead of average managers like Ericksson and McClaren. The FA had their chance years ago but snubbed Cloughie (a couple of World Cup thrown away). Gibson is an idiot too, Gerrard, Carragher, Owen, Kirkland and James have all played for England in the last 5 years is that not enough! Middlesbrough have given us Downing - wow! I am impressed NOT!
Stevie G, Liverpool, England
the reason why england arent doing any good is due to the inability of the FA to get their noses out from their own nether regions and open their eyes to the change in football imposed everywhere else! have winter breaks, have a national youth system and pour money into it. as for middlesbrough i cant believe steven gibson (who is a marvellous chairman) hasnt realised that ONLY a certain leftwinger who makes fleeting appearances for england from the bench (and makes little or no impact when he does play) comes from middlesbrough. woodgate isnt a product from said club. the reason why no young english players arent taking the starting places at arsenal and liverpool is simple. they're not good enough. you want to make sure they do play then make it so that wages. gate receipts and revenues become the LAST thing a club thinks of. because at the moment it isnt. oh and make sure that the coaches teach them how to pass and move. england will never win the world cup again if nothing changes
Chris, Ilford, England
The esteemed Mr Parry does have a responsibility to his club. He also has a responsibility to the wider game in this country. He and the other Premiership Chairmen are having a great party at the moment. This party is not going to last forever. Booms never do. There will be a correction. Supporters like and admire their own. Fergie has said many times in the past that a home grown player is worth twice one you buy off the peg. The Academies are not working because they are badly in need of radical reform. His own in particular. At youth level the game is gradually dying in this country. Ask Sir Trevor Brooking, he will tell you. If the youth game withers where does Mr Parry think he is going to get the next generation of supporters to fill his new ground. Its these fans as much as the football that captivates foreign TV watchers. My advice to you Mr Parry is to read some of articles in the press relating to youth football. I would invite him to spend a day with our junior club and another with Simon Clifford at Garforth.
Andrew Pratley, Harrogate, England
It's time for Rick Parry to leave- I'm a liverpool supporter but i care more about our national side than club but to be honest both are under achieving apart from one man steven gerrard. Ask him if he thinks england are second fiddle when he captains the national squad. GET MORE ENGLISH YOUTH LIKE GERRARD.
