Craig Bellamy was not the only member of the Liverpool squad to disgrace himself in Portugal but it might have always been asking too much to hope that, if controversy ever flared at the club, he would have nothing to do with it.
How BenÍtez must be regretting allowing his players to go out last Thursday night. The manager had been persuaded by some of the squad to allow them to enjoy a meal and some drinks out before they flew back home from their five-day training camp in the sun-baked Algarve resort of Vale do Lobo the next day. It was a reasonable request that drew an equally fair response – yes, but remember who you are, where you are and that you have your biggest match of the season so far against Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday.
What ensued was an insult to BenÍtez, who had treated his players with the respect they expect only to have it thrown back in his face by one or two miscreants. No wonder the manager will think twice the next time his players ask to go out when overseas.
The evening had started well enough and in good humour at Monty’s Restaurant and Bar, but alcohol changed all that. Bellamy is alleged to have got involved in a drunken row with John Arne Riise when the Norwegian – who was not said to be drinking – declined the opportunity to take part in karaoke.
Others, including Jerzy Dudek, Jermaine Pennant and Robbie Fowler, are also alleged to have got involved in a row of their own and, despite the best efforts of Steven Gerrard, the captain, and Peter Crouch, the forward, to keep the peace, the police were called. Enough to persuade the troublemakers to calm down? Apparently not.
Trouble flared again when the party were escorted back to the Barringtons Club and Barringtons-Centro Desportivo hotel, and even though no one was charged or arrested, the noise was such that June and Peter Lover, a retired couple from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, were woken up at about 1.30am and watched in despair from their apartment as armed police, some from Portugal’s riot squad, attempted to restore order.
“There must have been at least five police vehicles and a dozen police under our window,” Mrs Lover said. “The noise was terrible and we simply couldn’t sleep through it. At first it sounded like late-night revelry and we knew the Liverpool squad were downstairs. But then things seemed to get out of hand and the police arrived.” Mr Lover said one player with an Eastern European accent, thought to be Dudek, the Poland goalkeeper, was handcuffed by police before eventually being released. And only when a member of Liverpool’s management team arrived did things calm down.
“He kept telling the police how much he loved them, as if he was pleading to be allowed to go free,” Mr Lover said. “At one point, the police seemed to be slapping him around the face, trying to bring him round and sober him up because he was so drunk. He kept apologising over and over again but the police didn’t want to know. It was only after a while that the police found someone from the Liverpool management, who managed to calm things down and talk quietly. Eventually, the police let the player go after some negotiations and he seemed very relieved indeed and kept thanking them.
“We have many teams around the complex and there is usually no trouble at all, but this was not a very pleasant experience. It was thoroughly shameful and brings a terrible name to a club like Liverpool. These players get paid so much and are often so young, but for something like this to happen is awful.” Where Bellamy was at this point is unclear, but the forward, still angry with Riise, had allegedly made a beeline for his teammate back at the hotel and hit him around the legs with a golf club. Age Hareide, the Norway manager, seemed to confirm the alleged incident yesterday when he said that Riise was “fine” and “escaped without injuries”.
All of which provides an unnecessary and unseemly pretext to Liverpool’s first knockout round, first leg clash with Barcelona at the Nou Camp and has left a bad taste in the mouths of the club’s new American owners, George Gillett Jr and Tom Hicks.
BenÍtez had been encouraged to hear of dissent in the Spanish team’s camp last week, but, depressingly, the situation has been turned on its head. Only time will tell whether it adversely affects Liverpool’s hopes of progressing in the competition.
Bellamy will still be around, then, but it is unlikely to be for much longer after that.

True, they messed up, and it became public...
But at the moment, we're lacking decent strike-force, i say bring back Cissé!!! Or for that matter, buy back Baros!!!!!!
As it stands, Bellamy is our best option for scoring goals and so we need him!

Those bloody football supporters are so one eyed in support of their team that they wouldn't know the truth if it came up and hit them on the leg with a golf club.
Oh, hang on ...........................

I think you mean 'context', rather than 'pretext', although far be it from me to correct a Times writer. Apart from that, I'm not altogether convinced that the incident was as serious as you report (your report being pretty much a paraphrasing, including all the same, lurid details, of that emblazoned over the front page of your ultra-fair and reliable distant cousin, the News of the World). There is at least one eyewitness report of a relatively peacable, if occasionally boisterous, evening. I reserve judgement.

Don't we all think that this whole ordeal as been blown out of proportion, no-one knows the whole story all we have is tabloid evidence which is usually rubbish. I seen pictures of both Bellamy and Riise in training and they where laughing and joking, it all journalists trying to sell paper's.
Bring on barca.

Yes it must be totally true because we read about it in the papers!!!! ohhh dear..... I always thought that mature intelligent adults, which I admit some footballers are not, would always aquent themselves of THE FACTS before judging people and their lives. This is something that the papers, especially the gutter press which only deserves to be hung in toilets never do. They invent or embelish a story to fit their own agenda and sell papers and some people are gullable to be taken in!!! Oh yes and did you know that wrestling was for real and not scripted?? Let's get the facts THEN make comments. COME ON YOU REDS!!!

I think it's unfair to speculate about what did or did not happen on the night in question. Especially as there appear to be many conflicting reports of what actually happened. Liverpool FC and Rafael Benitez are aware of what happened and I sure will deal with the issue as they see fit. James Ducker appears to have a poorly veiled agenda to exacerbate the scandal surrounding the incident and drag Liverpool's name further in to the mud. It's the kind fanciful and provocative journalism I would usually expect to find in the Sun, but then perhaps that's down to the owner rather than the journalist.
Michael Williams, London,
Bellamy is a bum but Riise himslef is no stranger to fights. A couple years ago, at a Norwegian national team camp, he repeatedly provoked John Carew (now of Aston Villa) until Carew had it and attacked him.
He is no innocent lamb. But that said we dont have enough of the details here to know how if he pushed Bellamy further.
But clearly Bellamy has enough to answer for, in any case. What he did - attempting to maim a colleage - is grounds for cancellation of his contract. Period. They should do it.

Although three of the FOUR players involved in the drunken incident in Portugal, have a history of alcohol fuelled hooliganism, I was surprised it would raise its ugly head on a bonding get together before a very important Champions league game on wednesday.
I would expect the liverpool manager will deal with it in a very professional way, and it could see at least two of the culprits looking for new clubs.
Talented footballers they may be, but they are a disgrace to the game.

Craig Bellamy should be throw out of the Liverpool squad. Sack him on the spot and make it known that this type of behaviour will NOT be tollerated. I understand things get heated at times and not everyone can get on together but to attack another players LEGS which are his carear is completely unexceptable. Considering Riise wasn't even drinking he should not get any kind of fine at all. Riise might have a fiery lock of hair on his head but he is NOT a violent player...Unlike Craig Bellamy.
Rafa should DROP him from the squad going to Barlalona and get him shipped out as soon as possible. Liverpool do not need characters like him in the Liverpool squad. Attacking another player like that shows jealousy and certainly no respect for the team considering we have a huge game coming up.
Bellamy OUT!
John, Liverpool, Uk
To be frank. I thought it odd when Liverpool signed Bellamy and Pennant considering thier disciplinary records at previous clubs. I remember discussing this with my freind , a Liverpool supporter and saying how I wonder if these guys realise that this is probably the last chance they get at a big club, taking into account thier history of misbehaviour. From all accounts it seems Bellamy was undoubtly involved in some unsavoury act of violence yet again and I think he should be dealt a harsh lesson. Worst still against a member of his own squad, someone he knows. I hope for Pennants sake, his ivolvement in this fiasco was minimal if at all, and that he's paying attention. If I were Jermaine Pennant, I would be saying to myself. There're literally millions of people who would love to be in my boots.

Once a scally , always a scally.
It seems unbelievable to a fan that a player would have the blessing of the coach to drink the week before the biggest club game of the year, but to then to cause trouble and bring friction within the ranks is unforgivable.
Bellamy would be encouraged to remember the history and the privilage it is to wear the red shirt. Instead he acts like a kid with a hatful of ASBO's, I hope he is dropped , sold and never heard from again. I would really enjoy seeing him walk alone, out of the shanky gates turn left onto Brek Road then disappear forever
