Fernando Torres may be on the verge of becoming the most expensive signing in Liverpool’s history, but the Spain striker will take a pay cut to hasten his move to Anfield. Torres has also indicated that he is prepared to cut short his holiday to sign for Liverpool this week, but, failing that, the Atlético Madrid forward will fly to Merseyside to sign what is expected to be a five-year contract worth about £90,000 a week when he returns from the Polynesian Islands in seven days’ time.
Although the deal will put him among the club’s best-paid earners, alongside Xabi Alonso and Jamie Carragher, it is still less than the annual €8 million (about £5.4 million) he presently earns with Atlético and some way short of the reputed £120,000-a-week salary of Steven Gerrard, Liverpool’s highest-paid player.
Liverpool have agreed a deal in principle with Atlético, although it is thought to be significantly less than the £27 million release clause stated in the player’s contract. It is thought that Liverpool will pay between €26-30 million, with Luis GarcÍa, who is valued at about £4 million, moving the other way.
The Torres transfer will not collapse if GarcÍa rejects a return to his former club, however, and whatever the eventual cost, it will still comfortably eclipse the £14.2 million that Liverpool paid for Djibril Cissé, who is expected to complete his move to Marseilles early this week after the deal was held up over the weekend in the wake of late intervention from West Ham United. Liverpool would still like more than the £6.1 million fee that has been agreed with Marseilles, but Cissé, who spent last season on loan at the French club, has indicated that he wants to join only a team that can offer him Champions League football, despite initial suggestions that he favoured a return to England.
“We’re hopeful that the deal will be concluded this week,” Ranko Stojic, the player’s agent, said. “I’ll be talking to Liverpool again [today], but Djibril wants to return to Marseilles and play Champions League football next season.”
Aside from Torres, BenÍtez is said to be confident of making another significant signing – possibly a winger – within the next week, although the identity of that player is unclear.
BenÍtez also wants to force through a deal for Gabriel Heinze, although the Argentina defender is thought to favour a move to Spain, while Manchester United are reluctant to sell him to their rivals. Heinze’s future is unlikely to be decided until he returns from the Copa America, in Venezuela, in a little more than a fortnight.
Amid the clamour for star signings, BenÍtez’s desire to follow the path trodden by Arsène Wenger, the Arsenal manager, and acquire the Continent’s best young players before they become established has gone largely unnoticed. Dani Pacheco became the eighth such youngster to agree to join Liverpool when the 16-year-old forward completed his move from Barcelona over the weekend.
Barcelona were reluctant to lose Pacheco, but after the relegation of their B team last season meant that the C team could no longer function in the Spanish third division, the Catalan giants, who had already lost under similar circumstances Cesc Fàbregas and Gerard Piqué to Arsenal and Manchester United respectively, are fearful that more young players could follow suit. Liverpool will pay Barcelona about £350,000 in compensation for Pacheco, who has been likened to Romário.
Joining Pacheco at Anfield are Lucas Leiva, Alex Kacaniklic, Nikolay Mihaylov, Krisztian Nemeth, Andras Simon, Marvin Purie and Mikel San Jose, players BenÍtez hope will make Liverpool a force for years to come.

I like the fact that rafa's signing some young players as time will show what wenger has done with arsenal is make them a highly technical team on a relatively meager budget. Despite the cost of signing Torres, i don't think liverpool are quite in the same league as chelsea, man u, real, barca, and the two Milans when it comes to being able to afford £20 million+ players on a consistent basis. If only one or two of his fledglings reach the top level in terms of standard then it will have been worth the overall investment. Also, the relative failures could still generate income for the club through other clubs buying them in the future - much like what arsenal and southampton are renowned for. In terms of the summer signings the Torres signing is a huge coup in signifigance alone. It shows we can compete for the top players. I think we definately need a winger too but i've not lost hope that kewell can hit form again and be like a new signing for us. Heinze is adaptable & good squad man
Paul, London,
If and when Liverpool acquire Torres, the only thing that will help him make an impact is training. I'm not talking the training the likes of Gerrard, Riise, Alonso or Carragher will be doing. I'm talking in terms of getting the entire defensive unit of Liverpool to give Torres the proverbial beating of his life.
He's only 23 and has his best years in front of him. He's been Atletico's leading scorer the last few seasons, so the potential for greatness is definitely there. So get Agger, Caragher, Riise and Alonso to push him around on the training ground and strengthen the boy up. He's already got the pace akin to somewhere between Craig Bellamy and Michael Owen and he's somewhere between Kuyt and Crouch height-wise. Acclimate him physically and he'll make an impact similar to Berbatov for Spurs last year.
Matthew, Philadelphia, PA - USA
I will be perfectly honest, I don't really care if Torres is going to be the coveted 20 goal a season striker Liverpool have been craving for. I have heard many people deriding his goals record in Spain and all I can say is that aslong as he scores when it matters, then that will do fine. i don't care if he scores 6 times; aslong as it is against Man U, Chelsea and Arsenal and we win then that is what is imporant. Afterall, Liverpool's main problem last year was not being able to finish off these teams. The aquistion of Torres will go some way into helping the team win

Seeing it's The Times, I tried very hard for a couple of hours to come up with a very incisive, intelligent and rather cerebral comment. Here's all I could come up with...
VIVA RAFALUTION!
I love that man!
Harry Charkey, Liverpool,
Good start Rafa, Torres and Leiva are quality. Sign a left sided midfielder, a centre back and one more top striker and we will be giving the mancs and chelski a run for their money. Please do remember though, Steven Gerrard is the best CENTRAL midfielder in the world!
Anthony (Neds) Needham, Basingstoke,
Dani Pacheco can transfer his brilliance onto the premiership stage, then the title will come our way, sooner rather than later. He promises to be one of the best players in the world. Time will tell.
Ian, Liverpool,
World gone crazy...This is ridiculous. Benitez knows Torres full well, how on earth can Atletico be dumping this 23 year old on us who hasn't developed one single bit since his debut day?. On your bike Benitez and Torres will be leaving with you on the way, only for a 1/4 of the price. Beggars belief...
john_locke, london, uk
Torres will be a fantastic signing for the club. The comments from the Spanish readers just seem like sour grapes. He's one of the top strikers in Europe and playing for such an incredible club will bring out the best in him.
I'm sure Rafa is working hard behind the scenes to bring in more quality players over the next few weeks. Simao would be a good start and Benayoun would be a useful addition to the midfield. Heinze wouldn't be a bad buy either but I doubt Fergie will be too keen to offload him to Liverpool.
Kenny, Edinburgh,
Great signing, one of the most consistent strikers in Spain and no matter what the manure fans posing as Atletico fans say he will be a hit, just sour grapes that they chased him for 2 years and he's come to Liverpool. If Atletico fans really were glad to see him leave they'd not be protesting in the streets. Klose to Bayern, Torres to LFC, Toni to Bayern, Berbatov staying, looks like your stuck with the eternal crock Sahahaha and the truely overrated Rooney. Coupled with the best players except Ronaldo getting past it and the headless chicken that is Hargreaves, oh and the druggy at centre half and us LFC fans are laughing.
Don, Liverpool,
James Ducker - You have also forgotten the young dutch - former young Ajax player !!
Jospin van Orly , Amsterdam,
Torres is a geat addttion to a growing team, he is not the final answer, he is just the begining. It is about the team as a whole not just one striker. Whatever Athletico fans say, his stats are good and can only get better with a better team. He is young and can only get better. I welcome him with open arms! Good look next season Liverpool, I can taste the premership title.
Sean Kirk, LIverpool, Engalnd
Fair Play Rafa, signing for the future. Just sign Simao and that will make the team complete.
GrazieLFC, Worcester, UK
Even if Benitez signs Torres, the question remains will the manager be able to get the most out of his star striker. Liverpool have spent considerable sums on strikers but none of them has delivered 18+ league goals.
However, Torres has the potential to be the solo match winner that, Gerrard apart, liverpool lack. If the move works out, liverpool could challenge for the title, if not, the club has saddled itself with another expensive striker on high wages.
Adam, Reading,
Yahoo! Torres is leaving Atleti! As an Atleti season-ticket holder for more than 20 years, I can only thank Liverpool for allowing us to get rid of such an overrated forward, unable to deliver in his six years in the first team. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Pedro, Madrid, Spain
I am an Atletico de Madrid suppoter. Torres is crap, he is going to fail at Liverpool. He has done nothing with us, and it will be the same at Liverpool.
Jose Manuel, Segovia, Spain
Until rafa benitez does not change hes ideas of chopping and changing, and restrictive football liverpool will never challenge for the premiership. he is far too restrictive, defensive, and very rotating.
mehboob daud, blackburn, england
what about dos santos as a young player at barca?
izzy, London,
great signing's rafa just need 2 hurry up n get on with it dont bother selling crouch neither he will be great up front with torres
