Peter Crouch, the Liverpool forward, has admitted he deserved to be sent off against Chelsea last night, but has criticised the role of John Obi Mikel in his dismissal.
Crouch was shown the red card for a two-footed challenge on Mikel during the second half of Liverpool’s 2-0 Carling Cup quarter-final defeat at Stamford Bridge.
The England striker verbally retorted to crowd abuse as he left the field and
he admits he was frustrated. “Mikel came in with his studs up and that was
in the back of my mind,” he said. “Then I thought there was another foul in
there and obviously I’ve lost my head.
"There are no excuses for the tackle I made but if the referee had pulled
the foul up when he should have done it wouldn’t have happened. A lot was
going their way and I think frustration got the better of me.”
Crouch admits his challenge looked dangerous but says that he made only minimal contact with Mikel and he was unimpressed with the midfield player’s reaction. “What I’m thinking is if you go in on Frank Lampard or John Terry would they roll around like Obi Mikel did?” Crouch said. “I don’t think they would have done. Would someone like Carra [Jamie Carragher] have gone down like that? I think it’s safe to say that he wouldn’t.
“Foreign players have brought a lot to our game but that’s something you don’t want to see. I didn’t catch him but he’s gone down like he’s been shot.”
Liverpool were trailing to a deflected Lampard goal at the time of Crouch’s sending off in the 60th minute and the incident all but ended their hopes of getting back into the game.
Crouch concedes it was probably the defining moment of the game. “It’s frustrating because I thought we played OK as a team and obviously it was always going to be difficult from the moment I was sent off,” Crouch said.

Is Crouch trying to say that if he had broken Mikel's leg the red card could be justified, the referee was 3 yds from the supposed foul tackles by Mikel. Stop whining and accept that
YOU did wrong
Ronski, London, England
If you noticed, any of the big four have been playing their youngsters during the Carling Cup. Arsenal played a very young team and almost lost, so when we go up against a very strong Chelsea side with our reserves I really didn't expect much. It's sad to see such strong defensive players like Essien and Mikel go down so easily. The match up of Essien and Sissoko was something I was looking forward to but Essien decided to be a ballerina instead of a defensive midfielder. Crouch's challenge was stupid but not at all dangerous, if anything Mikel should have gotten a yellow for the foul on Crouch, and a yellow for diving like Ronaldo.

It is a shame that scape goats and mis-direction of blame are the order of the day. 'I just lost it' isn't good enough as anyone could just lose it. I remember Essien's bad tackle and the uproar that caused in his first season. Please don't tell me this will get watered down because Mikel fell over having had a bad tackle made on him. Please do not let us be distracted as well by hassling becoming kicking as a battle ensued for the ball. Anyone seeing the replay would accept the standard of competition for that ball as reasonable. Benitez is unfortunate and Crouch at fault, really that's all there is to it except that Chelsea looked like their old selves again. Go Blues.
Jeff, Bristol,
The outcome was really never in doubt once we saw the starting line-up for both teams. Liverpool starts a second string and Chelski their first.

Oh dear. It was a terrible tackle and he deserved the red. He'd get more respect if he just held his hands up and said sorry with no excuses. Shame, I thought Crouch was brighter than this.
It just isn't good enough for him to say 'sorry i lost my head'. What if this happens at a major tournament for England (assuming we ever qualify for one again)??
Ed, London,
That's the way blame the foreigners, maybe the coaches should tell their players to stop over reacting

Ridiculous, Maybe if Crouchie didn't foul Mikel at all, He wouldn't have had to fall like he was shot. Crouch needs to remember that it was a football game and not a kicking boxing game. Blame the action not the reaction.
