Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher believes Steven Gerrard is “made for the Champions League” after the club's captain scored the second goal in the victory against Inter Milan last night.
In the final minute of normal time the England midfielder picked up the ball wide on the right, cut inside and fired a low 20-yard shot which went in off the post to hand Liverpool a 2-0 advantage to take into the second leg of the first knockout round in the San Siro in three weeks’ time.
Gerrard has been criticised for not transferring his club form to the international stage but Carragher believes his team-mate always raises his game when faced with quality opposition.
“We would have been delighted at 1-0 but to get the second with a great goal by Stevie was the icing on the cake,” he said.
“He’s one of the best players in the world and I think he is made for the Champions League, when all the top teams come up against us.
“You see some of the names they (Inter) have got and he is the one that does the decisive thing at the end of the game.
“There were a lot of world class players out there on both teams and he stole the show again.”
There was pressure on the team going into the match and Carragher said that increased the moment former Everton defender Marco Materazzi was sent off in the 30th minute for a second bookable offence.
Faced with 10 men, the hosts were expected to go on and win but had to wait patiently until five minutes from time to end Inter’s resistance.
“You do (worry the breakthrough will not come) but as a defender you have to make sure the back door is closed. We can’t really get involved in what is going on up front,” Carragher added.
“It was important not to concede a goal in the home leg, especially as we were playing it first. It was a big thing on our minds at 1-0 not to let one in.”
Dirk Kuyt, the striker who had given Liverpool the lead in the 85th minute, said the victory proved the team are better than recent results suggest.
Having been dumped out of the FA Cup at home to Barnsley on Saturday, success in Europe presents the only chance of silverware for Rafael Benitez’s side this season.
“I think that is the magic of football. You lose four days ago against Barnsley when everybody is expecting you to beat them easily and you see a whole different team (against Inter) with a lot of the same players,” he said.
“We haven’t played well the last few games but we know how we have to play in the big games, especially the Champions League games, and we used that.
“All the players worked really hard as a team and we had confidence in ourselves because we know we have a lot of quality in the team.
“Everyone I have spoken to, especially the Dutch people at big clubs in Europe like AC Milan and (Real) Madrid, know how good Liverpool can be.
“We haven’t shown it the last couple of months but we still want to be there and we have a game to go.
“If we can go really far in the Champions League like last year (when they were runners-up to AC Milan) it will be great. We have the quality, we only have to show it on the pitch.
“We just want to keep looking forward and not too much in the past.”
Having gone two months without a goal, Kuyt has now scored in successive matches.
“The most important thing is to keep patient and wait for the one chance and I was really thankful I scored,” Kuyt added.
“I am really happy with that. It was a great moment. I had a difficult period behind me, now I just want to look forward now.”

Dear Jim:
Oooops! Europian league names are almost as confusing as in England, where league one is actually the third division!
Barrie Collins, Long Sault, Ontario, Canada
Barrie Collins - I agree that Inter don't look like a team that is leading la liga, perhaps serie A though
Jim, Sheffield,
Craig, Nobody has really challenged Inter's defence all season. On paper, they are unproven, and therefore suspect. It remained to be seen how they would react if a reasonably good team got amongst them. Liverpool weren't good enough to test them until the totally unwarranted sending-off of Matterazi, and even after that made hard work of it. Inter surely didn't look like a team that should be leading La Liga, based on Tuesday's inept performance. They looked like a side who came to play for a goalless tie, and when their game plan was destroyed by a loss of one of their key players, they had no Plan B.
Suspect defence? I believe Man U has a suspect defence also. When a good team puts the pressure on (on all too few occasions) panic sets in immediately. They attack all the time so the defence rarely gets tested, but under attack it doesn't look too good. Inter is in the same situation. Got it now?
Barrie Collins, Long Sault, Ontario, Canada
Brendan, I'm absolutely a Chelsea fan for the last 63 years, in fact. During which time I've learned that good teams are built from the back forwards. If you haven't got first-class defenders, then your defence is always suspect when the pressure is on. Inter's defenders are definitely not world-class. If they were, then Liverpool certainly wouldn't have troubled them.
Barrie Collins, Long Sault, Ontario, Canada
Gerrard's goal was a demonstration of the international class player that he is. He has a hawk eyed ability to spot an opportunity.
In previous champions league games he has proven his ability - the statistics are available for all to see.
The referee made the correct decision in sending off Marco Materazzi for two clear man handling offences.
Liverpool were unfortunate not to be awarded a penalty for a clear case of handball in the penalty area.
Inter are currently the top Italian team - but even their strong defense eventually crumbled to the sustained onslaught from this quality Liverpool side.
Gerrard could have rested after 90 minutes of high tempo attacking football - but he chose instead to attack and was rewarded by a 2 - 0 scoreline.
Freddy, Leicester, UK
Made Heavy Weather -breaking down an italian defence, especially when they are in damage control mode. Why is it that if Chelsea score in the last few minutes against those defensive powerhouses like Valencia, last years CL, then it shows great concetration and patience byt the players to get that required goal, but Liverpool do, and fully deserve to do it then it was a struggle and it should have happened sooner????
The fact is that the Inter players started to tire and the Red Men took full advantage to make it a tough assignment, even at home for Inter to continue.
This team had lost ONCE in all competitions all season, and are top of the Italian league by 11 points, the most defensively solid league in the world. So how can putting two past them been seen as a bad result!!!
Credit where it is due. Rafa hasnt quite got the League figured out yet, but NO-ONE, not the Special One, the new special one or even the great Sir Alex can compare to his achievements in the CL!!!
Paul Humphries, Sydney, Australia
nice to see the jealous comments off the children,
possibly they "support" some other team who have done so well in Europe!
Liverpool have proved themselves a magnificent force in Europe long before the critics above were born.
We may have uk problems but it is nothing that a change of Manager couldn't cure.
Eat your hearts out you critics!
Kenno, Swansea,
"Already suspect defence.." Mr. Collins? Is that why Inter are 11 points clear at the top of the italian league and were unbeaten until last night?
Craig, Sydney, Australia
Mr Collins; Chelsea fan, by any chance?
Brendan, Martin, Slovakia
Gerard scored a lucky, long-range, seeing-eye goal at the end of the match, and all of a sudden "he's made for Europe"! Get some perspective, Carragher!
In fact, Liverpool made very heavy weather of beating a team who had a defender sent off for two absolutely non-existent fouls, leaving their already suspect defence depleted for the majority of the game. That's nearly as bad as scoring non-existent goals!
Gerrard's main accomplishment was in winning free kicks for two out of three of his dives. Even Ronaldo can't better that!
