The animosity towards Liverpool’s American owners deepened over the weekend when the son of Tom Hicks was heckled by angry fans and spat at in a pub outside Anfield after the Barclays Premier League match against Middlesbrough on Saturday.
Since admitting that he had held talks with Jürgen Klinsmann, the former Germany coach, about succeeding Rafael BenÍtez as the Liverpool manager, Hicks has incurred much of the wrath from supporters opposed to his and George Gillett Jr’s regime.
Tom Hicks Jr, who was appointed to the Liverpool board of directors in the wake of his father’s takeover of the club a year ago, had been to watch the 3-2 victory over Middlesbrough when, against the wishes of the small party he was with, he decided to visit the Sandon pub, a popular haunt among diehard fans situated in the shadow of the Kop, about an hour after the game had finished.
Although not immediately recognised, Hicks Jr was approached a few minutes later by one supporter with whom he is understood to have had a constructive discussion about his father’s long-term intentions, but after ordering drinks at the bar, the atmosphere changed. Hicks Jr and his party, which was thought to include at least two other Americans and two drivers, became the target of antiAmerican chants and when they went to leave about 15 minutes later, Hicks Jr is believed to have been confronted by one fan, who spat at him but missed.
About £1,000 worth of damage is also understood to have been caused to the car chauffeuring Hicks Jr as the remonstrations turned ugly. One onlooker told The Times: “It was just after 6pm that Hicks’s son and the group he was with came into the pub. After a few minutes people started to recognise who he was. They were at the bar ordering drinks when the antiAmerican chants started and they carried on until they left ten minutes later. You could say he was a bit naive coming in somewhere like that.”
Hicks Jr is not the first of Liverpool’s American contingent to visit the Sandon. Gillett’s son, Foster, did so twice before Christmas last year and was warmly greeted, although there was not the opposition to the takeover that there is now.
Despite Hicks Jr’s apparent claims that his father remains committed to Liverpool in the long term, Hicks was in Dubai last week, fuelling speculation that Dubai International Capital (DIC), the private equity investment arm of the Arab state, is on the verge of buying the club. Informal talks between DIC and the Americans have been going on for several weeks, but while Hicks’s intentions are unclear, Gillett is thought to be ready to sell his 50 per cent stake in the club.

I would have done more than spit at them, I think they got off lightly and to go for a drink in The Sandon was a bad mistake. God knows what went through his mind, or what he hoped he would achieve by doing so. Well in lads for standing up for us.
Mr. K. Akabusi.
Mr Akabusi, Liverpool ,
Throwing a pint and spitting is not clever.
Walking into the Sandon with minders is downright stupid, the big Texan, like his father, needs to do his homework, what did he hope to achieve?
Get in the real world boys, this is a religion , this is over 100 years of history you are playing with, it might be just another way of spending daddy's money to you, but you found out quickly enough in the Sandon you dont mess with Liverpool Football Club, get on your horse Jr, and ride out of town.
Phil Johnson, maghull, uk
A reporter for the local 'Echo' newpaper was in the Sandon at the time, and reportedly saw everything.
When the Americans left the building, they quickly got into their vehicle and drove off. They did this before some of the fans inside could spill out onto the pavement. The reporter did not see anyone damaging the car, and did not think that the fans inside had time to carry out any attack on the vehicle. Other sources state that they do not think the car was damaged.
So, what is the source, claiming that the car was actually damaged? Was this the Americans? Or was it concocted by someone in the press?
Ian Johnson, Liverpool,
two points here
1 - The spitting part may not even be true, after all I certainly don't believe everything the papers tell me (Another source doesn't even mention spitting).
2 - If it is true, it is deplorable however it is the action of one idiot. Every club has them and I am not nieve enough to think LFC doesn't
Chris, Sydney, Australia
remember DCI are watching and wont want to be tied with a fans that cant control themselfs i know only a small few stay away more harm than good
del, kent,
Honest la, it wasn't me - it was Sankey

while such behaviour is wrong and should never be condoned, mickey from leicester should read the article properly before standing on his soapbox and stating that tom hicks jr "has had nothing to do with what has been going at the club", when in the third paragraph of the article it clearly states that he had been appointed to the club's board following his father's article. so putting aside the distasteful treatment dished out to tom hick jr, he is fully responsible for whatever has happened in the running of the club, good or bad, as that is what board directors generally do. anyway, it's all an unsavoury chapter and best put behind liverpool club as soon as possible. the important thing is to deal with current events with dignity and not bring any more bad press to the club or its supporters.
let's talk about football as things are a little more upbeat lately.

Come on, spitting at the owners son? Iits stupid and embarassing. I am an American Liverpool fan based in Tokyo. I love the team, live and die with it every week. I don't care who owns the team as long as they are committed. What I don't want is to be associated with morons that use saliva as means of protest. I would have rather taken a different approach....
James Fiorillo, Tokyo, Japan
I was there and it was just a group of Irish lads on a stag do who were getting a bit out of hand after too much to drink. If the club want to stamp out this type of behaviour they should be looking at how these groups get match tickets.
Daniel Villiers, Widnes, England
Lets nail this lie about being the worst fans in the Europe with an attributable quote by UEFA president Michael Platini - 'No they are not the worst behaved in Europe,' said Platini. 'It's official, they are not the worst behaved.'

The fact is that, according to Janeâs Police Review and Home Office statistics Manchester United, Chelsea and Leeds United were the top three worst clubs in the country for abusive and violent fans and football related arrests in the 2006/07 season.
We are not even the worst fans in England! Still, you can prove anything with facts can't you?

Paul, LIVERPOOL MERSEYSIDE, UK
No way would these have been Liverpool fans. Probably Chelsea, the NF, the police, UEFA, out-of-towners, Millwall, Everton fans and the Bulgarian justice system. Another special Anfield night by the sound of it.
Tony, Liverpool,
As a liverpool fan i can only say how sadening it is if this is true. Spitting is a cowardly, disgusting act and the so called fan should not be allowed in Anfield again. I have no affection for the current ownership but what can such a base act hope to achieve? I have a lot more time for constructive criticism.
Why is it arrogant to go to a pub? Pub stands for public house as in welcome to anyone.
jamesmacallister, edinburgh, scotland
They were probably just Irish whoppers embarrassing us as usual.
Paul Biscan, Prestatyn, Wales
Best fans in the world? where has that come from? I thought Liverpool fans were world renouned for this kind of behaviour.
mark, Doncaster, england
Is this what they mean by 'The Liverpool Way'' heaping even more shame on your Club and City by the worst fans in Europe Please stop being so bitter.
Derek Daly, Liverpool,
Typical Liverpool fans - "we didn't do it and even if we did it was all their fault".
WORST fans in the world you mean - if you don't agree ask the people locked out in Athens cos some of you lot forged tickets leaving the REAL fans outside.
MM, Ireland, (nee Liverpool)
By the end of the day tony evans and the rest of the RTK whoppers will be blaming everon fans, the BNP, chelsea headhunters etc etc, anyone but themselves. Greatest and most knowledgable fans in the world? oh aye, yeah.
david collins, liverpool,
try talking to people who were actually in the pub at the time, yes there were songs but there was no violence inside or outside towards Hicks and / or his car and certainly no spitting
Alex Keenan, Liverpool,
Very naive of him to visit the Sandon of all places. Also a bit arrogant especially considering his party advised him not to. Not classy and not behaviour becoming the best fans in the world but thoroughly deserved it must be said.
mark, romford, uk
Classy. Spitting at the owner's son, who has had nothing to do with what has been going at the club. I doubt Hicks senior will be too impressed when he hears what the Anfield faithful did to one of his family.
He might be tempted to screw Liverpool further into the mire before he eventually sells up.
Mickey , Leicester,
Best fans in the world.
Cally, liverpool,
liverpool fans normally are polite & respectful, i hope we dont become loutish & violent towards people we dissapprove of
john toher, galway, ireland
I seriously condemn whoever that fan was who spat at Mr hicks. Yes they have do extremely bad things that has dragged the team and club down. But to act like an immature child, its a disgrace. He should not have even been there in the first place as everyone knows the Sandon Pub and you do not go in there if you are not a die hard fan. However we are meant to be the best fans in the world. This is not proving it! I am only talking to the few who decided to do such ignominy things and on behalf of many liverpool fans we apoligise to mr Hicks and his family however they must come to realise a lot is due to their treatment of a club that is adored by so many that hate to see what the Hicks family have done to such a wonderful club.
