Steven Gerrard has delivered a withering assessment of Liverpool’s troubled season on and off the pitch, expressing sadness at the “damaging” rifts at boardroom level and saying that not even lifting the European Cup again would make up for the team’s failure to mount a challenge for the Barclays Premier League title.
For much of this season Gerrard has attempted to gloss over his dissatisfaction at yet another disappointing campaign for Liverpool, but in an interview with the club’s official magazine he has laid bare his frustrations in a manner reminiscent of Roy Keane’s infamous outbursts on MUTV.
Unlike the former Manchester United captain, Gerrard did not name names, but his outspoken comments appeared to be directed at just about everyone at Liverpool — whether in the dressing-room, the manager’s office or in the United States, where the two owners, who are barely on speaking terms, preside over an increasingly fractured club.
The rift between Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr, the American co-chairmen, their falling-out with Rafael Benítez, the manager, and the renewed takeover bid by Dubai International Capital (DIC) have overshadowed Liverpool’s problems on the pitch. But with the team occupying a distant fifth place in the league table, 17 points behind Arsenal, who are top, and even three points behind Everton, with whom they face a fierce battle to secure fourth spot and a place in next season’s Champions League, Gerrard says he and his team-mates cannot hide from the reality of the situation.
“In the position we find ourselves now, fourth place is the least that is acceptable,” Gerrard said. “We need to improve dramatically and, even if we do finish fourth, it doesn’t mean we’ve had a good season. We have bigger ambitions than that. The only way we can fulfil those ambitions is in the Champions League [where Liverpool have a 2-0 lead going into the away leg of their tie against Inter Milan in the first knockout round] and I am not going to pretend that even winning that trophy — and we are a long way away from it at the moment — will make up for the disappointment of the league campaign.
“I’m gutted every time I look at the table and see the gap between us and Arsenal at the top and even the gap between us and second and third. We believed we had the players to challenge for the title and we wanted that one more than any other trophy available to us. I still believe we have the squad to be a hell of a lot more competitive than we are. We can’t keep talking about next season. Sooner or later we have to make one season the season we make it happen.”
Liverpool have generated too many headlines about matters off the pitch, initially through Benítez’s falling-out with the owners and then through the rift between Hicks and Gillett, which has opened the door for DIC to buy into the club. “It hasn’t been a good situation for anybody,” Gerrard said. “It’s sad so much of the club’s business has been conducted in public. It has been a damaging situation for every person involved with the club.”

Dear fellow Liverpool-fans,
I am certain that we all are going through one of the hardest periods of recent times as far as our affiliation with this wonderful football club is concerned. It is deeply tragic and threatens to damage everything we stand for. Nevertheless, these are the times when we all must stand up for our manager, our players and our club's reputation.
Everywhere you look there are column inches filled with criticism and sensationalist speculation. It seems, in a crude way, as if a platoon of raging pragmatists have finaly been able to swing the machete upon our already fragile team spirit.
Seemingly, there is a complete and utter lack of togetherness at Melwood, as the team is apparently going through a civil war. Seemingly, Rafael Benitez is catching the first flight back to Spain in the summer. And seemingly, our club owners are the laughing stock of the entire planet. We have become the epitome of everything that is wrong with modern-day football.
Ketil Stensrud, Kristiansand, Norway
i cant believe "what steven gerrard says" is one of the most read stories in the times!
tim, liverpool, uk
Whichever team wins the Premiership excludes the other teams from success. Winning is a selfish pastime for those who have to impress their worth on others.
Give me a team that wants to play really well but is not obsessed with the result or with money. The idea that "winning is all" undermines the finer principles of fair play and "well played".
Geronimo, London,
As a Liverpool fan I know it would be hard to replace Gerrard but sometimes I think he should move abroad so that he can do what he does best there. As long as he is stil at Liverpool, in a game where we have not performed well everyone will still be looking to Gerrard to do some sort of Magic. I'm really passionate about the club and soometimes think it would be best if he moves but his replacement is a problem.Very soon he'll start thinking that he's bigger than the club but I believe there's a suitable replacement out there but has just not been found yet.If he moves to another team i dnt think he'll be the main talisman that he is right now...if Madrid make a £50m bid like i read in 1 of the papers i'd sell him.Like wat arsenal did sell Henry and build on a new squad not around just 1 player.
OR
Stevie should stay one more season and if he dont win the league then he should move on but not 4get where he came from...
Tate Chixx, London, England
The complete ignorance of Russ below is hard to summarise in a few words. If you have no knowledge of the game of footbal, please don't comment.
Gerrad single handedly won the Champs league fir Liverpool in 2005 in one of the greatest sporting achievements of modern times.
Chris, Lancs, England
russ from fleet. you havnt got a clue. steven G is one of the greatest players this country has produced in the last 20 years. The problem lies with other players in the team. people seem to forget the fact that Liverpool have been without Agger through this campaign.( the rock at the back )
Liverpool are still in the top half of the table and are still in the champions league. Im sure theres many football fans who wish there team were in the position Liverpool are in.
Its time we got behind our most succsesful club in England.
malcolm roberts, Ellesmere, Shropshire
I agree with D. Heath of London, where are the Liverpudlian Liverpool fans? Do they not have an opinion?
W. Boyd, Brussels,
It can hardly be said that Gerrard has been conducting the club's business in public. He simply gave a full and frank admission of his own feelings in the club's official magazine. Just because it's for the record it doesn't make it business.
Sean, London,
A hugely over-rated player that he is he needs to concentrate on his own game and not only score penalties. I guy who has built his reputation of not actually winning games for Liverpool but getting them to penalties! He should concentrate on actually being able to play at another pace and improve his short game, unless the game is at 100mph he struggles to adapt! Lampard week in week out is better than him unless The Sun is marking the game!
Russ, Fleet,
"Never fulfil his potential"???
All this guy needs to make his trophy cabinet complete is the Premiership, World & Euro.
I think that means he HAS fulfilled his potential Phil. Check before posting I think.
Paul, Nottingham,
Should have gone to Chelsea when he had the chance. This season, though, he has lost something. Never more so than when Anderson completely bossed him when Liverpool lost to United at Anfield.
jonathan anthony, london,
Is Gerrard still receiving his £100K+ weekly salary? Is he still wearing the Liverpool shirt and captains armband that thousands would die for? When he and the team want to play (eg Inter Milan), they achieve. As so often happens in recent times, they don't feel the pride wearing the red shirt and are happy for all the rumours 'off the pitch' to be blamed for our mediocre performances.
When they are thinking about who to blame for the bad results every Liverpool should look no further than the mirror....
sweeneytodd, warrington, uk
Other then Gerrard and Torres, Liverpool don't have anyone who can unlock a tough defence. Rafa is good at buying defesively sound players, but if Pennant and Yossi are his idea of someone with that extra bit of specialness, then Liverpool deserve to be where they are in the standings. Tevaz, Hleb, Rosicky, Nani, Adebeyor . . . examples of recent buys by the Top 2 that do have that extra bit of creativeness that Liverpool so desperatly and obviously lacks.
Dholio, Vancouver, Canada
Gerrard will never fulfil his potential at Liverpool and should start looking for a club abroad.
Philip, Tunbridge Wells,
this is just another moan from a player looking for what he thinks are greener pastures. liverpool have carried gerrard all year apart for the odd game (against the lesser teams)he is looking to get out , if he wanted to stay he would have names names but no he took the cowards way and just had a general
swipe at the club. the club should call his bluff and move him on using the cash this would raise to by players who want to play for the club and not themselves
seamus, dublin, ireland
"Itâs sad so much of the clubâs business has been conducted in public."...says Gerrard, as he conducts the club's business in public.
Stick to what you know best Steve and let your football do the talking.
Al, Swindon, England
My God!
Are there any Liverpool supporters in Liverpool these days?!
All these 'plastic scousers' around the world saying 'We' need to sort things out. You're all as bad as the 'plastic Mancs'.
Try supporting a club a little closer to home, may be a 1000 miles or so, and you may even be able to see them live sometime, and I don't mean on Sky!
D.Heath, London, England
Wow, if so many of you guys think that "Stevie G", or Superman as he is otherwise known, isn't making an effort then there are a long list of clubs willing to take him off your hands. I'm sure that Liverpool will receive a huge premium for him, and perhaps it will help ease the financial troubles too.
Senor Benitez does seem to favour Lucas over Gerrard so there is an obvious replacement.
But of course this will mean that the opposition will only have to mark Torres to nullify Liverpool's threat.
John Hope, London,
I really do not understand the so-called Liverpool fans questioning Gerrardâs ability, and form. Gerrard is Liverpool through and through, and criticism of performances is wholly unjustified. His is a world class player, who has stuck with Liverpool when it would have been easier to leave. He is the only player, apart from Carragher, who seems to have provided a candid and honest opinion about a perpetually failing Liverpool side. It is a coincidence that these are the only players who grew up Liverpool? I think not.
Gerrard, along with Carragher and Torres, carry the Liverpool team. It is towards the 8 remaining players that frustration should be vented.
Andrew, Watford,
the team has not been good this year,we will end up fighting for fourth spot with everton, a la 2005 and balance of probabilities finish 5th.its pointless keeping benitez if he carries on rotating the squad, the team will not improve in the premiership ,to quote shankly the league is 'our bread and butter'
if the club want to win trophies we have to compete in the transfer market,i cant see this happening under the current owners.
DUNCAN, PRESTON, LANCASHIRE
While I would never questions Gerrards qualities as a player and what he has done for us in the past I must ask the question where were you when we needed you as captain to rally the troops. When we were having a hard time of it due to off field issues. Where was the come on lads lets get a result today, forget about whats going on off the pitch, lets do this for the fans?
The bottom line is that you were no where, your performances was effected just like anyone else.
I'm sure even you would realise we are still lacking that creativity to match the likes of Arsenal and United.
Joe Singh, Walsall, West Midlands
There is a sense of tragedy with Liverpool. I agreed with the sentimental, that at the start of the season Liverpool may well turn it on this year, great performances on the Continent over a period of three or four years and even some FA cup success led many to believe that this was their year.
They have struggled to migrate form from Europe to the Priemiership and Lpool domestically lacks depth, vision and a sense of Team. I heard the other day that some players neglect to even touch the This is Anfield sign as they walk out in front of the kop.
Reputation is built upon years of success and the legacy of those who saught original greatness. liverpool have arguabley the finest club history of any club in the world and those that built it, played for it, supported it and loved it must feel cheated by whats going on at the moment. The rich and dramatic tapestry that is LFC is gently fraying from the top so that it spoils the masterpiece that has engaged so many for so long. 17 Points
Ben Jones, Manly, Australia
Perhaps if you stop taking all corners, freekicks and penalties and also stop shooting from far out uncontrollably we would be in a better position
Frans Ghirxi, Macina, Malta
Dan,
I'm a Man U fan, and although I found your comment incredibly funny (I laughed at least 10 minutes), it's even funnier to think that you are critising the one person, out of everyone at Liverpool has doe most to actually get you anywhere close to winning anything.
Just think: no Gerrard = no champions league group qualification which in term means no CL victory. The result of that? You don't qualify for the next years CL because you finished 5th. FA Cup final against West Ham anyone? And we're ignoring all the games he won for you that meant you got into 4th in the first place. Certainly not happenign on the back of most of the average dross thats been around Anfield for years.
Short sighted and a cheap shot I'm afraid. Gerrard is just vocalising what every non-liverpool fan and most of the ones who recognise its time to stop living in the past (not the ones who still think that they have a devine right to success because they sit on the Kop) has been thinking for about 4 year
David, HARBORD , Australia
I may be in a minority but I am totally fed-up with Gerrard. He acts like Charlie Big Potato and thinks he is bigger than the club. I remember when he was subbed against Reading. The sulk was incredibile as if to say "how can you do this to the mighty Stevie G". His performances for Liverpool and England have been poor for some time now. Liverpool should sell him, invest the cash wisely and build a team without a figurehead. Look how Arsenal have prospered since they sold Henry, a player who is 10 times greater than Stevie G.
Kevin Gunn, Brighton,
We have to sort out the ownership saga before the start of next season. Hopefully DIC will be in control. They will give a good transfer kitty to the manager and with some good signings added to the current squad we hope to challenge for the Premiership.
Larry Vella, Gozo, Malta
Perhaps if you passed the ball more often rather than thumping it from distance we wouldn't be in this mess....
Dan, London, uk
When everyone was saying how this could be Liverpool's year at the start of the season, nobody seemed to realize that those fantastic predictions were made in a vacuum. All of Arsenal, Man U and Chelsea, even Everton and Man City had also made additions to their squads. They were not just lying still to be overtaken by Liverpool. So what if LFC bought Torres? Man U bought a raft of good players, Nani, Tevez etc and so did the other teams. Sure Arsenal didn't buy but they'd been developing the same team for a long time, and had been below average and below Liverpool for so many years whilst in that process. The EPL is not a pareto thing, LFC improved but other teams improved as well, and LFC had had to improve more than the other teams just to keep up.
Zahar, Kuala Lumpur,
This is funny how he says everyone at the club should "have a look at themselves". Yes he played ok against Inter and scored a great goal which put us in a good position but Gerrard has had a terrible year. We all now he plays well in cup competitions and always had but the league is a different story.
When you expect him to stand up in the league against Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal he disappeares. Ive will always support him but its obvious he hasnt done it in these games in the league ever really. Hes meant to be our Ronaldo/ Fabergas and drag the team up when things go aginst us in these games. Maybe its time he looked in the mirror for once and stopped blaming everyone else. Masch has carried the midfield this year, and Gerred has looked ordinary at times.
He probably does try get the team going but will never have the drive to motivate a team like Keane or Adams. Carra is the only man.
Stevie let your football do the talking
