Tom Hicks’s troubled relationship with George Gillett Jr turned ugly yesterday when the Liverpool co-owner threatened to block any attempts by his business partner to sell his 50 per cent stake in the Barclays Premier League club.
Dubai International Capital (DIC) remains committed to buying Gillett’s stake in the first phase of its quest to take control at Anfield, but Hicks claimed that his fellow American is answerable to him and cannot sell without obtaining his permission.
Hicks’s outburst is the first public indication of the extent of the breakdown in his relationship with Gillett and came on another turbulent day for Liverpool, during which Jamie Carragher was arrested and cautioned for common assault and Rafael Benítez, the manager, backed Steven Gerrard’s withering assessment of the club’s failings on and off the pitch.
“Not only am I not going to sell, my partner cannot sell without my approval,” Hicks said. “So I kind of have the ability to determine the outcome of what is going to happen, and I am right in the middle of that.”
Gillett has been seeking an exit strategy since his relationship with Hicks became untenable after a series of run-ins, but while he may be bound by an agreement to offer his stake to his partner before any other potential buyer, it is thought unlikely that Hicks would want to acquire Gillett’s half-share of the club.
Contrary to Hicks’s repeated claims that he does not want to sell, discussions between him and DIC are continuing and although he intends to retain some of his shares and influence in the short term, the Texan, along with Gillett, is willing to grant the private-equity investment arm of the Dubai Government access to Liverpool’s accounts, with a view to a possible takeover bid next month.
Gerrard hit out this week at the “damaging” rifts at boardroom level and the Liverpool captain’s remarks are clearly shared by Benítez, even if the manager was careful not to antagonise the Americans, with whom he has endured a difficult relationship.
Benítez sympathises with Gerrard’s frustration at Liverpool’s continuing inability to mount a credible title charge. “Everyone at Liverpool shares Steven’s sentiments, there is no question about that,” the Spaniard said. “We wanted to be further up the table and the fact that we are not is a disappointment to everyone. But the important thing now is to concentrate on what we can still do.
“We are still in the Champions League and our record in that competition is one that most other clubs would envy. And we are still confident of finishing in the top four, which would obviously mean we would qualify for next season’s Champions League again.”
Carragher’s brush with the law was another headline that the club could have done without. The former England defender was questioned by police yesterday after a roadside confrontation with a man near his home in Crosby on Tuesday morning. Carragher, 30, had been on his way to training at the club’s Melwood headquarters at the time.
The incident was reported to Merseyside Police by a witness who saw Carragher arguing with the man, who also reported the incident to officers. The defender was called in for an interview and accepted a caution, which is an admission of guilt. A spokesman for Liverpool declined to comment.

Football at the top level ceased to be a game for the fans when the Premiership was formed.
As with the Government and tax on the public, fans are just a source of revenue for the owners, icing on the sponsorships and TV cakes.
Does anybody remember the excitement of the 'pink-un' or the 'green-un' on a Saturday night?
We no longer count - so get used to it or take your custom eleswhere.

Stop the whinging and put your money where your mouth is! We can own our club outright and never have to face this nonsense again!

Years Ago, Liverpool fans displayed a banner at Goodison in a Derby match saying"Agent Johnson - Mission Accomplished".
I somehow think there will be quite a few banners around Anfield on March 30th "Agent Hicks - Mission Accomplished" as Evertonians take revenge.

The situation has been turning ugly for quite some time, both on and off the pitch. Firstly, regarding ownership, Moores and Parry should be lynched. They sold the family silver for a farthing, at the wrong time, to the wrong people. Football has never simply been about investment for financial return. It's about investment in a shared passion, for the long term and for the benefit of the club and, most of all, the fans. Say what you like about Abramovich, he loves Chelsea; he's not just invested his wallet, he's also invested his heart. Next, the Spaniard has lost his way. So long as Rafa is at Anfield we can kiss the PL goodbye. An annual scrap for fourth place will be the best we can hope for. Moving on to the players, the squad is average at best. Gerrard is dissafected and Torres, for all his fine words, must be wondering what he has got himself into. All this needs to be resolved quickly before the club is ruined. Liverpool, GET A GRIP!! Hicks and Gillett, GO!

I love Liverpool, I really do.
As soon as Eastenders is over, I turn over to Liverpool TV for more soap opera.
Manchester United went 26 years (1967-93) without winning the league title and, while it seems incredulous to suggest that LFC's barren period without a championship winning season might go at least long as that, it is currently 18 years since they last won it and that tstretch of time has gone in a Manchester United-dominated flash, so perhaps another eight years is not at all that far-fecthed.
Anyone offering odds on 1990-2013? Hilarious. U-S-A, U-S-A...!!

At the end of the day Moores and Parry created all this monumental cock up. They had good offers from Morgan and DIC along with the Americans. Greed not passion influenced their choice.
Dud , Liverpool, England
I think it's only a matter of time before Hicks sells out. He knows that. He has no personal or emotional attachment to LFC. He's only playing tough now so that he can get more money for his shares. Remember that he's a businessman first and foremost. He doesn't care about football. His actions and words in recent days did not exactly endear him to the fans but I don't think he cares.
I think Gillett is a better owner for LFC. He must have regretted the day he asked Hicks to join him.
LMC, New York,
I am appalled at the state of our club, our reputation and legacy is being dragged through the mud by the Americans who lied through their teeth at the outset. Despite their asurances that the club would not be saddled with debt they have loaded the balance sheet and are reportedly looking to load even more on. Please just leave now before you do any more damage.
Matt, Bath,
These Americans clearly are not acting in the long term interests of the fooball club, either in spirit or actions - so why not do the decent thing and leave . How could their reputations ever recover in the eyes of the fans short of making £100 million available for players , which as we know they are clearly not going to do . They had no idea what the running of a top flight soccer club meant .
Ian Johnston, Belfast,
It's quite easy to get rid of the owners of both liverpool and man utd. simply boycott two games in one month, then one game each following month. messrs. gillett, hicks and glaser could not get out quick enough at the sight of empty terraces.
there would be no shortage of buyers who have more respect for both the fans and traditions of the game.
however, having seen the craven acceptance of the glaser family's iniquitous treatment of the utd. season ticket holders i don't hold out much hope that the fans of these clubs will take any positive action to get rid of those who treat them with open contempt.

i agree with finchie, the fa needs to step in and prevent banks from financing premiership clubs new owners.
i dont know what hicks thinks he is doing ,if he is that committed to liverpool why doesn't he sell his sporting interests in america ,buy out gillette, and build our new stadium?two hopes there, bob hope and no hope.

This really is such great comic opera.
For months, we as Manchester United fans had to put up with "U S A" chants and all the anti-american rhetoric from Anfield. It is so refreshing to see that United did their homework and ensured they were taken over by a reputable businessman who appears to give a damn. Once again the scousers back a loser, have no money, are going nowhere in the league and would appear to have a non-entity of a new stadium being built sometime never. Oh what a great club - and they deserve it all!
mark geldart, Liverpool, England
Why are the fans after the owners? The same owners that have given Rafa Benitez all the money in the world to buy the worth-less players he apparantly like (Torres not included). Liverpool have a useless hubris-infected manager and a captain that are smothering all the other players. Without Gerrard we would have seen much more from Alonso and Babel and the team would have been better (yes, I am drawing paralells to Henry's departure).
Fire Rafa the Hack and sell Gerrard for £30 million, use that moeny wisely and the team should be able to challenge. STILL; WHY IS IT THE AMERICANS FAULT?
Jimmy, Sthlm, Sweden
All efforts must be made to STOP Hicks or Gillette in profiting in any way from selling off parts of Liverpool FC. If they profit from this transaction it means less money for Liverpool in the future.
Neal, Melbourne, Australia
Mr Hicks you may as well sell now, as soon you will have nothing of value to sell.
Your just running a great Football Club into the ground.
Ken, Wollongong, Australia
Sorry, but it's no longer OUR national sport. Liverpool and other clubs must learn from this episode. I can't see what the FA can do in these situations. Fourth place! Come on Everton!
John, York, Yorkshire
Once again, I don't see why the situation at Liverpool is being protrayed as a giant crisis. Hicks is simply stating that his partnership agreement with GG stipulates that each partner must offer his shares to the other before trying to sell them to any third party. Standard stuff really.
MS, London,
Hicks is a bully. He would ride roughshod over the wishes of Gillett, DIC and football supporters if it meant making more money.
The FA must learn from this sorry episode and prevent such parasites having a part in our national sport.
Finchie, Manchester, England
